Low Power FM.
> http://wjzp.org/ You can still listen to the 'TOS morning show just north of Portland on 96.7 WCME. Right on the coast this lpfm reaches from Freeport to Old Orchard Beach.

If you use the search button to the left, you will find a very extensive thread about it and the discussions about it as well.

Just so you can read what was said about it...

I still don't get how the fcc allowed a station on 105.1 in portland.
wasn't TOS's signal "grandfatherd" in any way?
I have problems down in ct with 2 99.1's. WPLR and another one from NJ 99.1 and they are godfautherd through the fcc and don't have to worry about spacing.

WTOS's protected contour doesn't even go past Auburn/Lewiston.
In other words, while you could hear it in Portland, there was
NO PROTECTION to WTOS in Portland. Simple as that.
OZ go back to one of the umpteen threads we've discussed on here about it, I've explained this before...

I still think the whole thing is stupid. wasn't their any way for them to know that tos was there. If I were the FCC I would have rethought their protected contour and relised its a lot further south because of the flat lands away from the mountains. Its kinda wierd how you can go south of portland almost to the nh-mass border and still clock in TOS.

I don't think that the FCC really cares about the fact that there are people that get all giddy that they can get WTOS in Portland or south of Portland. The fact of the matter is that Portland lies far enough away from WTOS's protected contour. Now you could go into the discussion that maybe the operators of the new LPFM knew that there were WTOS listeners in the Portland area and purposely put their station at 105.1 as a way to stick it to Clear Channel. But that's neither here nor there, and I have no 'inside information' on anything related to that, if it even exists. Don't quote me!

I very seriously doubt WJZP has a vendetta against WTOS. More like 105.1 was the only available channel according to the FCC LPFM search program. WCNH in Concord NH is nearly unlistenable thanks to 1st adjacent interference from WHOM. But according to the FCC, 94.7 was the ONLY channel available for LPFM there.

If the latest NPRM on LPFM passes, then LPFM stations could use the contour overlap method to find other channels.

But it doesn't change the fact that the dial is full, especially here in the Northeast. You're going to step on someone else's signal (and they on yours) no matter what frequency you choose. The last thing we needed were MORE radio stations.
