106.1 The Breeze

For the record, here's an aircheck of the launch of Sunny 104.5 back in August 2002:

http://www.amstereo.org/files/sunny1045.mp3

Two notable things: Sunny 104.5 had much better imaging and jingles, as does the Sunny Radio format on iHeartRadio online today. The guy with the weird accent that The Breeze has reading their liners just doesn't cut it. And at least as of yesterday, on HD Radio receivers their station ID was still showing as "REAL-FM".

Also, Sunny 104.5 was focused specifically on the '60s and '70s (at least initially), and Sunny Radio today is largely '70s and '80s, while The Breeze is all over the map from the 1960s to the 2010s. I don't mind that kind of variety, but it needs better playlist scheduling. It just doesn't sound right to hear the Righteous Brothers followed by Adele.

Beautiful music until 1982 then a short-lived MOR, still using "Wish" from 82 - 83.

Wow, 1982 was the year Boston's Wish went MOR, too. Pretty much all the beautiful music stations nationwide were gone by the end of the '80s. In the '70s, Boston had FOUR stations playing that stuff -- WCOZ, WJIB and WWEL as well as WSSH from Lowell. WWEL flipped to disco, then to CHR in the '70s, while WCOZ became an album rocker. WJIB stuck it out to the end of the '80s, going smooth jazz in 1990.

Did it happen at 5am? I remember setting my alarm really early that day to catch it.

This is a great thread. I am really actually enjoying most of these songs. It is like Yacht Rock meets old skool r&b. I am interested in seeing how this will do. Even if it pulls a 3 share...i think that would be pretty good for this.

The Breeze now has DJs (although they may be voicetracked) and their HD Radio ID is showing as WISX-FM.

They still need to work on the playlist. I heard them go from Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" to John Legend's "All Of Me" -- that's a 52 year jump, although "Stand By Me" did become a Top 10 hit again in 1986 when it was featured in the movie of the same name. (I've also heard them play "Unchained Melody", another '60s tune which became a hit again after being featured in "Ghost" in 1990.)

And some of their modern song choices are anything but "relaxing", such as Alicia Keys' "Girl On Fire" and even Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" (I didn't hear it, but it was listed on their web site as "recently played".)

Are the Talent on 106.1 The Breeze from San Francisco or Sacramento?

Browsing many of the Breeze playlists, are they playing the 1997 version of Candle in the Wind or the live 1987 version?

And I saw that they played "Waterfalls" by TLC. Interested to know whether they played the one with the rap or the AC edit that pretended rap wasn't even a thing. LOL.

"Stand By Me" and "Unchained Melody" sound timeless, not like '50s or '60s period pieces. Either fits fine with the Legend song to my ears, just as they would with Adele's slower hits, like "Hello" and "Someone Like You." A trainwreck would be going from "In the Still of the Night" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale" into Legend or Adele. Those songs practically scream "'50s" and ''60s," respectively. You'd have a really hard time finding consensus positives on both songs in a testing environment from anyone other than outliers with extremely broad tastes. So far, I think they are cherry-picking the older songs in the playlist extremely skillfully.

Why would ANY station play the one-off Princess Diana version now, other than maybe to mark the anniversary of her death?

Everything I've seen has it listed as Candle In The Wind 97. That's why I asked. Obviously, not the case but I wanted to ask in case they resurrected that version like they've resurrected Air Supply. LOL.

I have a hard time grasping the concept of anyone, let alone an FM, switching to MOR in 1982. MOR grew out of the "golden age of radio" being replaced by television and involved an inordinate amount of talking; news sports, information and wrapped around general interest music that wasn't necessarily hit based. It began evolving into Adult Contemporary by the early 70s and was mostly gone by 1980. Toward the beginning of this evolution, the format was briefly referred to as, "Progressive MOR".
I remember KOMO Seattle still up and running later than most.

I've noticed that WISX has been playing a lot of music by black artists, as well as music from white artists that is popular with black people (Michael McDonald, Ambrosia, Hall & Oates, etc.). It often even sounds more like Quiet Storm than Soft AC, especially considering how many times they've played "Me And Mrs. Jones"! But considering the demographics of Philly (44.8% white, 44.2% black, 13.6% Hispanic), it's a good sign that they're adjusting the format to fit the market, rather than just throwing on a cookie-cutter playlist.

106.1 still has a lot of leftover black listeners who liked Real 106.1. Hoping that some of them keep 106.1 on their presets even though it's a soft AC
