106.1 The Rooster

Its not about beating QDR, but rather taking 3-5points away to help G105.

sounds right. I've seen it in other markets too. Do you honestly think CC believes WMKS can overtake WQMG in Gboro? NO! They just want to steal some of the audience so that TQR's slice of the pie will look more attractive. TQR is the golden child of the Greensboro cluster, G105 is the driving force in Raleigh. It's good business. May be bad radio, but good business.

Oh and I agree 96fan...there's only SO much slide guitar a man can handle!

I think the mystery of "The All New 106.1" has been solved... They are still country as 106.1 The Rooster, but they are now branding themselves as "the NEW Rooster Country 106.1" and evidently did away with "the legends," leaving only "today's country." The message flashing on my RDS display for that station now reads "The All New 106.1 - Today's Country." The default display (shown between songs or when the Tar Heel Sports Network is on the air, for example) still reads "ROOSTER."

Rooster needs to be given at least 24 months to catch. AND it needs A LOT of marketing.

They did a lot of marketing and it didn't work. The only thing that could help the Rooster in the ratings would be to move Bob & the Showgram to 106.1. It will never happen and the Rooster will keep one foot in the grave until coporate finally realizes something is wrong in about 2 years.

I'm sorry to hear the legends are gone.

Someone should do all legends. I'm not saying it'll be a ratings success, but so far the Triad still has a great-sounding legends station, at least musically.

I saw an ad in the Sun News for John Boy and Billy's Myrtle Beach station, which was rumored to be going hip-hop (the rumor even made it to Wikipedia). The DJs imitated the painting "American Gothic" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gothic). John Boy was the woman. :D

Rooster was a good move when CC did it. John Boy and Billy may have been a mistake. QDR is an average station with lazy jocks yet they are rewarded for what they have acheived by default. They are benefiting from their position, but someone could take them down. Not sure it's RDU unless CC spends some bucks.....and we know that's not gonna happen.

I don't consider myself a country listener and don't know much about hte WQDR jocks but to say they have achieved success by default may be one of the most assinine posts ever made here. 99.9 came at them from '05 to '07 with all the money, talent and technology Capitol could throw at them. That station is now sports. WRDU flipped to country with John Boy & Billy in 2006 and must have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on tv ads and they are in the toilet going nowhere. Last I looked WQDR was still the number one station in the market. If that is what freqdev calls winning by default he's just stupid.

The idea, yes. The execution, not so much.

CC should've taken WTRG/100.7 country (better coverage down east), and re-tooled WRDU back to a balls out "classic rock that really rocks".

Bob and Tom could've stayed - just needed to be marketed more.. and better, than they were.

Under OM/PD Bob Edwards WRDU did extremely well.... Top 3 M25-54 in AM Drive and overall. Edwards left March 2003. The slide to a flip began shortly thereafter.

99.9/WCMC is also a Class A half market signal. From that standpoint alone they couldn't truly compete.

Correction VODood. WCMC is a Class C3 with plenty of coverage in the key population area. Whatever they lacked in coverage they more than had in lots and lots and lots of advertising. What Clear Channel "should've" done is not the point. WQDR has taken on two different competitors with lots of money and more than enough signal and won. I agree with Fidelipack that freqdev's comments about them winning "by default" are just stupid.
