Are you sure about that? A "programming genius" would never program a playlist of "4,000 plus." That would be suicide. The only people who would listen would be radio nuts like you and me, and that makes up a very low minority. Tell your friend to buy a LPFM. Then when he finds out a format of 4,000 songs isn't successful, he won't lose too much of his investment.

And you think playing the same 400 songs over and over again that everyone is sick and tired of hearing all the time makes a successful station? Seems to me if most of these same radio stations were successful they wouldn't be flipping formats every two to three years on an average. Facts are these same stations are losing ground and listeners to internet radio where most of these online stations provide a larger play list than FM Commercial radio.

If it were me personally, I wouldn't care if the station was successful or not as long as I had fun with the it. That's all I care about is having a radio station where I play what I want and have fun. Screw the corporate mentality along with arbitron ratings, and the big bucks.
I'm sure they are playing more than 400 songs. They are probably using a music selctor service that spins a group of songs everyday then puts them away for a while then plays another group for a bit until returning to the original, and also remember it will do what you let it do, some PD's & MD's will go in and massage the log to give it some extra juice, it just depends on how much time you spend on the scheduling. Keep in mind also that The Mountain to my knowledge is not being promoted, so there are going to still be listeners tuning in for the first or second time so you want to have your "A" list records being heard. Not to mention a few "Oh Wow" records( Rose Royce-Wanna Get Next To You) being spun every now and then is a great hook too.
I think that format is still a relevant format because you have Boomers who are still active and have money. They are the first group of 60 some yr olds who are still enjoying life and not in rocking chairs. Remember they were in their 20's when that music was made and that music is still going strong.
This economy is bad right now and a small market station isn't going to sink money into jingles, promotional give aways and personalities. Yes I think it would benifit to have all those elements. Especially since it is targeting the tourists in the Smokies. There is alot of golden memories stuff there like classic diners and soda shops vintage car lots not to mention Rod Runs. Seems to me an Oldies station on FM is a win situation there. Yes I agree if the station sounds like fun the listeners will have fun too.
So the best bet is to wait for the economy to brighten up and then I'm sure The Mountain will add those extra elements perhaps.

If you want to just play what you want and have fun and not worry about the Arbs just purchase an AM station. The trend these days are that AM's are putting up small FM 25 to 30 mile translators and using the FM freq. as the selling tool. Who knows it could work.
