106.7 Flips Friday At 1:06 PM

I agree with RockMustLive. Waaay too many Country stations (And Classic Rock/Classic Hits stations.) Country/Classic Country: WIOV, WGTY, WRBT, WCAT, WIOO, WHVR, WWSM. Add WAYZ to the mix if you're in Adams or Cumberland county. Classic Rock/Classic Hits: WTPA, WRVV, WYCR, WKZF, WSOX. Add in WRFY if you're in Lebanon County and WZBA if you're in York County.

What I would do: Put the "X" on 106.7 and make it even bigger and bring back Q106, York's own CHR, to 105.7. You would at least pull 5 or 6 shares of sellable demos.

I respectfully disagree with you Ray. Should Cumulus make the move to Country on 106.7
it would be financially the best move for them. They could be a 3 market Country station
leading the ADI in 25 - 54; No one else has been able to accomplish that and it would be
huge in terms of revenue if they can break into both York & Harrisburg with a Country signal.
They've already got Lancaster and with the Huge 106.7 signal they can bring in big audience
and huge revenue from both York & Harrisburg. The addition of 106.7 as a country station
would have no effect on stations like WIOO ,WHVR, WWSM as the audience is completely different.
I can tell you from experience the audience that listens to Traditional and Classic country
and Bluegrass.
is totally different from those who prefer todays contemporary country.

With the "youth movement" that has begun with WINK 103, I don't see why you would put on a CHR station that could draw female #s away from WINK. Obviously their conservative brand of Hot AC and CHR are different but there would be some overlap as adult friendly CHR is today.

I agree moving the X to the bigger stick makes the most sense. That guarantees a successful product on that signal. But I 105 and I 1057 would give Country coverage to Cumulus in all three towns, and they could try to compete seriously in country in Harrisburg and York.

At this point, with 102.3 in a trust, why should Cumulus even be worried about their future?

Seltzer you are spot on. The scenario you speak of would likely
be the most beneficial.

Good points. I would guess that the I-105.1/I-105.7 combo is the likeliest scenario. In Harrisburg, though, CHR on 93.5 and Hot AC on 104.1 co-exist nicely.

Grandole, I agree another contemporary Country station will have little if any affect on your station or mine. But here's the open question: A new York Country station will have to pull numbers from WGTY to be successful. Whatever you think of GTY, they are a 28-year heritage station with long-established local personalities and perhaps the York and Adams area's best-known local newsman. Full-service all the way.
And Country listeners are loyal. Might be tough.

Might it be easier and successful much quicker to drop in a CHR where none exists now? You'd pull in CHR listeners who are now listening to out-of-town stations immediately.

Maybe Friday afternoon we'll all be surprised!

My pipe-dream is that it would become a WIOO, that we could hear in Lancaster.....I know that isn't happening though! :'(

First of all, 106-7 is already a gen x thing and it didn't work. The on air tease says a new station for Harrisburg and York is coming to 106.7. Why is there still speculation involving frequency swaps? It will be on 106.7. Why not country? Does a heritage station get a free pass forever? Again...by targeting Harrisburg and York...and leaving out Lancaster...I can't help but believe that they are protecting their one product that is basically a Lancaster station...or should we say Lancaster/Reading...WIOV. This would give them wide country listenership over the entire ADI plus Reading. This would be an attractive buy to pitch to agencies. If heritage stations were untouchable, BOB and WGTY wouldn't be here today. Why not 105.7 rather than 106.7? The X is doing well on 105.7. The signal of 105.7 is directional. In southern York Country, 105.7 from Baltimore overrides the X in places. If they want York County, non-directional 106.7 would serve them better.

WRBT and WGTY are big-signaled stations and can be challenged only by other class B FMs. With all due respect, the class A FMs, FM translators and AMs don't matter in this battle. Both stations have been unchallenged in a long time. Let the games begin Friday!

Couple of things----1067 was weak when it wrapped up its country run as Cat 1067.
Should NEVER had abandoned Z-107. The station was a shell of its former shelf because Bob, led by current WXTU PD Shelly Easton, destroyed the station in the ratings. Also, when Citadel acquired WIOV, they flipped the weaker station 1067 to protect IOV. Everything that has been tried on the frequency has been a disaster. By putting Country on 1067, Cumulus would be back to square one with a station competing against WIOV. Makes NO SENSE!

WQXA is the only active rock station in the three city area, with one of the most popular morning shows in the region. It is a proven winner. Their audience would easily follow them up the dial to 1067. And finally you'd have a proven station on that frequency.

Cumulus is CHEAP. C-H-E-A-P. The whole WINK experiment proves that. Same morning show on two stations. The same could be done with WIOV on 105.1 and 105.7. Cumulus then has full market country coverage. They only have to pay for one morning show..Murf and Casey.

All Cumulus would need to do is put someone on middays and PM drive on 1057. Unless they decided to do a full blown simulcast, breaking away at commercial breaks for the two stations.

Think less $$$$$$$$$ Follow the money, or in this case, lack of money to get your answer.

We'll know soon. Friday at 1:06 will be here before you know it.

106.7 complained about a terrible signal for years in Harrisburg. Then at one point they were told to look up. The antenna had been installed placing the main null of the pattern directly towards Harrisburg. I believe they eventually looked into the signal pattern and turned the antenna increasing coverage in Harrisburg.

Let me throw another thought into the mix (no, pun intended). What about FM Sports? Between their properties, Cumulus already has the market rights to ESPN, plus they have the rights to the Eagles, the Steelers, Penn State football, Orioles baseball AND I believe Phillies baseball. Put that altogether and you could have a formidable sports station that would hit all three markets.

FM Sports is becoming more popular across the country.

Just a thought.....

Well, you can't put the Eagles and Steelers on the same station, because they often play at the same time, and there's absolutely no way the NFL goes for it. Ditto the Orioles, the Phillies, and MLB.

And as WTKT illustrates every year, cramming as much play-by-play as you can onto one station (Senators, Bears, PITT, Cumberland Valley, Bishop McDevitt) makes for very confusing branding. Awfully hard to call yourself the PITT station when you carry perhaps 40% of their games. The schedule conflicts were enough to make you insane. Then you have to come up with these convoluted logistics (moving a game to another station's Web stream, asking a former cluster member to carry a game, etc.) that truly made the whole operation seem like it was being improvised moment to moment.

When we actually had ratings around here, sports stations never surveyed higher than a 1.0, which makes me believe that putting sports on 106.7 is the equivalent of committing 50,000 watts of suicide.

I wouldn't mind a talker, quite honestly. WHP has no competition to speak of, and even though 106.7 would have to corral a collection of (relatively) less-popular syndicated hosts, the FM signal could be a selling point. Of course, they'd need local newscasters, maybe one or two local hosts, and more than likely, a reconstruction of existing studios and telephone setups.

The anticipation is almost too much, lol. Whatever it is, I can almost guarantee it will be a regurgitation of some stale format. Perhaps another classic rock station? There's only about 10 of those around here.
