106.7 Launch Date

WYAY is now running trial run in-house broadcasts. That probably means they will debut within the next week, if I could bet.

The launch could be sooner. CBS ran trial in-house broadcasts for WNEW three days before going live. Merlin just went live in Chicago, which was a big mistake (there are some really bad air checks floating around). Merlin in NYC did in-house trials, but I do not know for how long.

One way or the other, from the tweet that EJM posted, it would appear we will hear something about a go live date later today.

For the duration of the "chocolate and shoes radio" bit, that's about how :p...

At least one industry insider (Jerry Del Calliano) reports Merlin is about to dump its all news stations in New York and Chicago. No matter where all news is tried, the challenges are huge. Cumulus has a long, uphill climb ahead of it with 106.7.

Hopefully, Cumulus will be more patient. Since they are going to use this facility as a news hub for several markets, that means the costs are spread among many costs centers. If they want results in six months, then there will be dissapointment.

How about FM sportstalk on 106.7 that seems more logical and would not take as much time to take off as fm news would

Why would Dickey kill his own family's station (WCNN 680) and "give" that revenue to Cumulus which he and his family do not own (yet)?

That doesn't make sense, though I have long pushed for 105.7 sports.

So, it is 5:15...... where is this announcement?

No one said their would be, but one of their editors, Ninette Sosa, from CNN, said that a launch date was coming today,

Obviously this woman lied or something, because nothing happened today.

So much for the credibilty of their new hires. CNN never does let the facts get in the way of a good story.

I guess, in "mid May", May 15-16 is about as "mid" as you can get.. still no news.

But, wait! Was that "mid May, 2012"?

I think the date might not be announced at all. It could just happen.

Of course it is this year.

I believe they will launch when they're ready to launch and it will be a soft opening. So it could happen any time in the next 10 days or so.

Having enjoyed the privilege of helping to launch WNEW, I can tell you that you can do dry runs for a month, and it will not stop the on-air glitches once you go live. I can tell you personally that they were painful (especially when I was the responsible one, LOL) and I have nearly successfully repressed the memories into my subconscious.

And...as we constantly remind ourselves...it's a marathon, not a sprint. (Think WINS and KYW didn't have their nightmares getting underway?)

That said...what an exciting time an opportunity. NOTHING compares to the launch of a new station, warts and all. I am blessed to have been a part of it. I hope the Atlanta crew enjoys the ride as much as we have in Washington.

I know that when WNEW went live in December, they just did not do much live stuff for the first couple of weeks. It was all they could handle to just keep the newscast running with copy. After the first couple of weeks they slowly started adding additional elements to the newscast. The live from the field folks did not happen until a couple of months after go-live.

We actually went live in late January, and we did have live reporters right off the bat. We did, however, experience some Comrex issues and initial bugs in the field software, so we were limited to phone reports for a bit. The glitches have mostly resolved themselves, and our reporters are on it now.

The WNEW product sounds very good now. I notice that new elements keep getting added here and there. We would all like to know what the ratings are. It seems CBS is not subscribing to Arbitron yet for WNEW and the public ratings are hidden.
