The River in Atlanta- The River, a Classic Hit’s format, plays only the most familiar, chart-topping hits from the late '60s, '70s and early '80s.

From Elton John and Billy Joel to the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey and Styx.
The River’s music library reads like the story book of the River’s loyal and responsive adult listeners' lives.

My guess is that it wont be the same River as in Atlanta. But also kinda weak if they plan on going Classic Rock. Perhaps, Soft Rock?
 
People are getting confused by the term "Classic Hits." It has two meanings, which the industry should clear up.

KONO is an Oldies station that has dropped most pre-Beatles titles and added a few pop-sounding 80s songs. KONO has jingles, has DJs talking over the intros, plays Motown and other African-American artists, plays hits that scored on the Top 40 charts that may never have aired on rock stations. It's the successor to the Oldies format. People call this "Classic Hits."

In Atlanta, "The River" is a familiar, pop-leaning Classic Rock station. There are no jingles, no fast-paced DJs talking over the intros, no Motown, no Aretha. It plays Classic Rock artists but leans toward their more pop-friendly, less hard-edged, familiar songs. This is also called "Classic Hits" as opposed to Classic Rock.

In many markets, the two versions of Classic Hits happily co-exist. As I said above, we really should change the terminology for one of these formats since in the minds of listeners, they're really not alike.

Before this news broke, wonder if KZEP had ever considered going a bit more in the classic hits direction (a little more Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, and the like - with a little less classic metal and hair bands)?

The success of The River in Atlanta will not be the same in SA....That's a fact. While it might gain some numbers in the beginning, it will likely be short live.

But also, why react? KZEP is #1 25-54. KZEP will likely follow the same play book The Beat had when Power rolled into town. NO REACTION!!!

Speaking of Power, another web site says there's rumors of Power or Z coming back...unlikely but I read that on another web site.
 
Looked at the playlist, sorta similar to 107.5 The Eagle in Houston. Doesn't look like a format like that will overlap KONO's. With KMFR gone, Cox can do a double take to now CC owned KZEP.

On another note, what a crappy moniker for a San Antonio station. There isn't exactly a "roaring river" that twists and turns its way through San Antonio, is there? I mean, we have all been to the RiverWalk and witnessed the "river that is not a river," the San Antonio River. Laughable.

Let's try to get a little more creative next time.

Ever notice how there are no lakes in Los Angeles - yet they kept the name after the team moved from Minneapolis? ::)

Yes, and how much Jazz is there in Salt Lake City, Utah?

Calling a station "The River" in San Antonio makes as much sense as having one in Atlanta: "Water source for some 3 million people, the pristeen (sic) Chattahoochee River flows from the north Georgia mountains to become the sewer for the city of Atlanta." (quote from "About North Georgia") Then there's Modesto, California, where there isn't anything remotely like a river. There is a station called "The River" in Chicago, too, but the real Chicago River is nothing to brag about.

So having a "river running through it" doesn't matter that much. But from another standpoint I think it's questionable to have another "River" located so close to 102.3 in Austin.
 
Has anyone bothered to consider a 'country music' format? Afterall, this is the heart of Texas and country, (or what is currently referred to as country), is a popular and profitable format. Besides, 'the River' sounds country.
 
Precisely my point, DtotheJ and jd. A moniker is how you brand your station, and branding your station can make or break you. You can put this station right up there with Modesto and Chicago for having irrelevant monikers.

I'm not saying you have to be in St Louis, Memphis, Baton Rouge, or New Orleans to be able to dub a station, "The River," what I am saying is that it doesn't make sense in San Antonio.

The Mission? The Bexar (Bear)? Cactus 106? Those are pretty lame, but they are ten times better than the friggin' River.

There is really no way its a country station. There are already 2 in San Antonio... Cox owning one of the two with Y100
 
Yeah I agree with Dominique. Absolutely no way it's going to be a country station.

I don't think it is going to be classic hits, either. Jack FM is pretty much classic hits. I'm sticking with my guess of 80s Rock.
 
106.7 The River is nothing more than a decoy!!!...They know you radio heads would do your research and leak info on sites like this!..Cox radio has learned to use online networks like "facebook" this time around,which they did not allow in the past. Time to step up their promo & revamp their sales team... Get ready for the return of....Tune in @ 5pm!

I'm not suggetsting that KZEP will or should react at this time.

The classic hits formats have been gaining steam in recent years. Classic rock stations that play Elton John's "Rocket Man" are more popular today than they were 10 years ago (and KZEP-type classic rock stations are less popular). I'm just curious if, in recent years, KZEP had the slightest thought about a slight tweak in that direction in attempts to protect their turf and discourage a station like "The River" from coming to town.

I'll be honest with you, if "The River" happens, it could have a leg to stand on. First, consider the recent history of that frequency. Can it get any worse? Moderate success would be a huge improvement...enough to keep the station alive for a spell. Secondly, this format can be excuted with low overhead. Third, there just might be a niche for this station in San Antonio. I gotta admit, some days I ain't in the mood for Ronnie James Dio.

I am speculating that you are insinuating that Power is returning.... I highly doubt that.

There would be more of a chance of a 24 hour Lionel Richie station.
