106.7: What do you want it to be?

I was talking to a former PD/MD/GM of Power 106.3 (Joe Woodford) about MOViN coming to Columbus. He didn't comment.

We take our blessings where we can find them.

I just posted under my "For People Who Don't Like Radio" topic what I want 106.7 to be. It ain't gonna happen, but none of you will be heartbroken about that.

I wouldn't mind a new Rocker. Something a little more grown up than the Blitz, but not as soft as a AAA. Is that to Schizo? I guess I like the music that the Blitz plays, but I don't need the goofy DJ's named scooter and the bits that appeal to the 18-24 demo.

It would be nice to have it owned by somebody else so it won't sound the same as all of their other machinations... ;D

What I think...Christmas tunes on both 106.7 and 93.3 for the season. What's one more to the X-mas party? Besides anything to screw with Sunny 95. Then CC will do an urban flanker to hurt Power. That way they can keep WCOL, WTVN and WNCI as the top 3 with no interference. There is also the possibility of some type of rock. That's where the hole is. A good alternative could be in the works because there's really nothing there. Don't count CD101 because they just don't get it and never will. What I would like...a great Triple A like KCBO or KTCZ. There's no adult rock in town unless you can stomach the same old fried tunes again and again and again. The question comes down to what gets on which frequency? If the alternative route is chosen then there's an opportunity for CD101 to take the Triple A lane and finally do something useful with their operation. The Triple A would also hurt WBNS-FM because they have leaned WAY to much in that direction, away from being a Hot AC. Their ratings have shown that to be the fact. They were doing much better when they straddled the middle ground. My two cents worth...

Not an expert with rock but if I'm smart, wouldn't an adult rock interfere with The Brew?

No.  In Denver, CC's cluster does quite well with a top-rated AAA plus a Classic Rocker, an Alternative and an Active Rocker.  This kind of scenario is extremely common outside Columbus.  There may be some sharing between the stations, but actual cannibalization is small compared to the gains and the ability to own certain demos.  In Cincinnati, CC has rocker WEBN and Classic Rock the Fox, yet recently switched 94.1 from Hot AC to an AAA-leaning format.

NuRoo2 is spot on. The Brew is just another form of oldies in this market. They do their thing with WLVQ, WODB and WLZT to just hit the tip of the iceberg. The active rocker is WBZX and the so called alternative is CD101. Both are catering to younger demos. There's a profitable hole with Triple A for people who grew up with album rock but were largely abandoned when the target changed to either younger males (active rock or alternative) or older males (classic rock). There's an audience still searching for a newer sound than classic rock, something less aggressive than alternative or active rock, more music intensive than Hot AC and less syrupy than mainstream AC. The Triple A format targets an active listener with a passionate presentation of new music along with a contemporary library that most stations have stopped playing or have not touched at all. The Columbus market also has four things that favor the format (Thanks Inventor989) which includes being the state capitol, a sizeable amount of listening audience that is involved with the community in some way, a major university/college infrastructure, and a high population of college graduates. Yes, that audience can think and they get involved. What a concept! That audience also has a lot of expendable moolah. The Miller Kaplan power ratio has Triple A ranked third for both 2005 (#1 is news and #2 is Hot AC) and 2006 (#1 is news and #2 is sports). That makes the format one of the most efficient business models in radio today. The format brings in more money for every dollar invested because the audience stays longer and they listen more closely which advertisers love. WXRT in Chi-Town is not a huge ratings success (12+) but simply a license to print money! Hopefully someone with insight will do this in the near future. Oh, that's right, I forgot I was talking about Columbus.

Bill, your right on. A great Triple A/Alternative would be great in Columbus.

Cities 97 in Minneapolis is one of the best stations ive ever heard in my entire existance. But I think the owner of knowing how to do this format the best goes to Saga. The company is king at this format and if they did it on their new 102.5 frequency, then they could really show their stuff.

What is this triple-A format? If it's heavy on whiny alternative music, I for one won't listen because I never was a fan of this genre. If the kind of music they play is something that would appeal to people who liked the pop-rock of the 80's, then I'm all for it. That is really the hole that's missing IMO, pop/rock music that moves.

boyphenom...in an effort to better educate myself would you please give me a few examples of "whiny alternative" music? Would you also let me know the difference between what is played on the Brew and what you have in mind? I think I understand what you are looking for but want to make sure. By the way, you probably aren't a Triple A listener and that's cool. I do believe that your form of oldies would have a place here with the right talent, production and image. If you want to listen to a couple of great Triple A's then log on to www.cities97.com and www.kbco.com. Lauren McLeash who does Cities 97 has put together a top notch radio station...period!

Its hard to explain, because I don't keep up with the acts anymore. But som examples of the pop-rock stuff I liked in the 80's/90's would be Europe, Asia, Level 42, Billy Idol, Journey, Foreigner, Gap Band. Basically, it doesn't have to do so much with the genre so much as the cadence and tempo. And no, I'm not talking about listening to a different way to package the musties ..... I'm talking new music that follows a certain tempo and beat (and I don't mean a dance station). Something fun to listen to ..... does this make sense?

Makes sense to me and should be a fun station to listen to. I understand tempo and texture better than most and the importance of that to your concept. Get it on air and I'd put you on a button!

I would like for it to be a pop station like Sunny used to be. 106.7 should hire Sandy Bennett as a DJ. I know for a fact that she has a lot of listeners who miss her! She has a unique style that is very different from most DJ's which makes her very popular and she could generate ratings & sales for the new station!

If all the out of work, talented on-air people with listeners who miss them were to rasie their hands at the same time, we could probably eliminate cloud cover over most of North America. It's all about who you know and how cheap you'll work.

I'd love to see 106.7 do something like the other person mentioned like 104.1 in Hartford, CT. I use to live around there and have been back a few times recently and must say its a pretty solid station. Wouldn't mind something like that...........though I wouldn't mind seeing Power1075 dethroned with some serious competition with a little more powerful station on 106.7.......something with a mix of urban maybe a Kiss station with some variety?
