1060 WIXC - Changes

I would also suggest that the non-compete agreement be reviewed by an attorney. Depending on the length of service to WIXC and the fact that no severence was paid, there may be grounds to break the non-compete. As a matter of policy, I have always refused to sign a non-compete due to he fact, as I had stated to one former GM I once worked for,

"If I sign the non-compete but I have no employement contract, what's to stop you from firing me tomorrow and I'm out of the radio business in this market for the next two years? I won't sign".

I've lost some jobs by refusing to sign, but other GMs have backed down and hired me without the non-compete. It can't hurt anything and may be worth the while of the person in question to consult with an attorney on the matter.
If you are fired your non-compete can not be enforced.

Our Lawers looked at it....we ask our employees to sign so they don't want to be in the middle. But there is a way around it...It spells out the counties, and Indian river is not metioned so we might make her an Indian River Rep. Sad thing is we (I) honor agreements and contract, BAM doesn't. He broke her contract a few months ago with a 60% cut in salary

Someone who doesn't quite understand the law may not be aware of what agreements and contracts can and cannot be enforeced. That's why I say when in doubt, either don't sign at all or consult with an attorney first.

Excellent advice

You know, WIXC does generate a lot of interest. This thread seems to be the most read thread in the history of the Orlando forum. Is that a reflection of the station's potential, or the oddity of its situation, or what? It's fascinating to say the least.

Big sticks--even big AM sticks--in decent markets spell opportunity. WIXC is like a very good (not great, but very good) restaurant location that's been occupied by a lengthy string of shitty restaurants. It will take considerable time, effort and money to erase the reputation of those awful restaurants... but the location is still very good.

Most of us watching from the sidelines keep hoping that a Ruth's Chris or, at least, a P.F. Chang's is going to surface on 1060, though some of us find it highly amusing when another choke-n-puke ("Ernie & Mable's Er-Mabe Cafe") opens & closes in 3 months.

You know, it's like rubbernecking at the trainwreck...

Like that same restaurant, you could make a small fortune running this station...provided, of course, that you started with a huge fortune....

Actually, the classic country format was the best sounding thing on WIXC in many many years, regarless of what folks think of the music or the commercial viability of the format. I believe Ted could have attracted the audience. The station sounded professional and had potential. Genesis had the opportunity to keep Ted at a very modest cost, all of which was covered by advertisers Ted brought with him. But the deal wasn't about audience or operations or any other radio stuff. It was about BM trying to sell the station and the investors quickly coming to the realization that the station was not worth even half of what Ted's deal was for. My understanding is that his investors were not radio people, they were friends, and they were willing to invest in him but not to the point of being taken to the cleaners. I know for a fact that he offered to stay at a very modest salary. Instead, the station flipped to Greg Sherlock big band music followed by the left overs of talk radio that WMMB and WMEL didn't already have. It continues to be a big stick in search of a format in a small to medium market. Operating toward a profit is not what Genesis is looking to do. Operating toward a sale is the strategy, and I doubt that's working out very well. With an audience and a format the station would be a lot more saleable.

I disagree that BAM wants to sell or even has a stratagy. He does not know what he wants other than quick revenue and every deperate move he makes takes him further away from that goal.

He will never attract anymore good talent, people would rather be unemployed that deal with his silly bipolar decision making and treatment of people. He is the worst radio owner I have ever met.

;D ;D ;D ::) i BEG YOUR PARDON, I HAPPEN TO CLAIM THAT TITLE!!! BIGAPE

You usually expect a person to at least act in their own best self-interest. That does not seem to be the case in this instant. It seems like the motivation is to harm others more than promote the owner's self interest. That's disturbing, honestly. But as I see things develop it becomes more and more evident that this might indeed be the case. I was shocked when a senior person from Orlando was fired for no reason that I can tell.

I don't think BM will have much choice but to sell WIXC when he runs out of money. Perhaps he has more money than he knows what to do with, and this is just a little hobby of his to chew people up and spit them out. That's even more disturbing. I'm truly grateful that I've never had the displeasure of working for him, and never will (God willing).

Radio Potato,

I agree with you about the classic country as I listened via the stream during that short era. I
have personally done well with a classic country format (now on Internet and iTunes.)

I've never worked for BAM, but I did work for someone who operated in a similar manner. Every time their station would become someahat successful, the efforts would be sabotaged. It was as if they WANTED it to fail. Maybe it's a tax write-off. In any case, many great radio folks were used and abused in the process.

I don't foresee a rosy future for WIXC although it will probably continue limping along for a while.

Well the billing got almost to $30,000 in the spring and then BAM just put the breaks on, turned down orders....Like money for a morning and afternoon shows...didn't want to mess with the programing...then puts informercials in the middle of Laura Ingrahm and Savage.
Those decisions defy logic and show some insanty...he had a staff that didn't know how to sell sports and he forced all sorts of sports on them taking prime inventory from selling local shows...which IMHO is really what that station should become.

Desperate people do desperate things....add some insanity and a bipolar owner into the mix and you get WIXC and Genesis.

You say the billing was nearly $30k monthly? Do you happen to know the current billing for WIXC?

That's kind of my point...BAM has the best sales team he has had in years, runs them off with his bipolar behavior and decision making...now he is left with nothing, no billing, no sales team, and no decent radio sales person/manager will touch him with a 10 foot pole...heck I would work at McDonalds before I would ever work for him. He has had at least one serious offer for that non-performing piece of crap and he turned it down.

I have nothing to gain by saying a word but when a rather unknown and unimportant station like WIXC can run up 38 pages of commentary it's taking a look. I've met Bruce and am a little surprised to see some remarks as he has struck me as a guy just trying to survive his company. He sits in Tampa 99% of the time focusing attention on the property that could end it all, 840/1040/1470.
With all due respect, WIXC, Mims is not a major market, a growth market or market that should need so much analyzing. I can't figure out if all the disgruntled name callers have found great success in other markets at other company's or if they're just p---ed off their time ran out and need to be mad at somebody.
While thinking of no one in particular Florida often slips in a more casual laid back way of doing business, especially stations in a coastal area that takes it easy and has redefined results and success. In other words, if Bruce bothered to jump in with his side of this rather biased chatter, he might say he's had a lot of staffers who talked a good game but let him down. He shouldn't need to be running way over to Mims to be bothered with poor performance.
I'm guessing if he "micro managed" it was because some didn't deliver and the bills keep on coming. I do agree they've had some poor choices in formats and they need to let something stay in place a while but frankly I'm sure WIXC is as big a pain in the a-- as some of the people who have all the answers. And I'm also betting if anyone outside this board thought WIXC was such a great property, in such a dazzling town with a killer staff just itching to kick butt, they'd be on his front step with an offer and Bruce would probably say "take it..good ridance." In the meantime in a tough economy with a station that's loosing money he's still meeting payroll. I could name you company's that would have taken it dark, fired everybody and had $4 an hour board ops till they could dump it. I don't know why he keeps it but to my surprise after calling a broker, WIXC is not on the market. Why? It's as much this area of FLorida as it is a string of poor performing staffers. You really think an AM station is an easy game these days? Sorry folks, this hurts, but we're all having to work harder for results. Some people feel put out to be asked to do any more. But clearly a lot of current and formet staffers have a lot of time to b--ch and moan. I hope your current employers are getting better results.

OneTake... Do you happen to know Bruce Maduri personally or even professionally? I've spoken with him twice and have met him once. He seems like a pretty nice fellow to me.

I think the reason this thread has become so popular has more to do with the "rants" and "raves" over the seemingly unknown radio station in a relatively unknown radio market although Brevard County is a Top 100 radio market. The thread has become somewhat entertaining over opinions to say the least.

I've purposely held back and kept my opinions and comments to myself during this thread, only making an occassional comment or asking a general question every now and then.

I believe you have hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial heard with your assessment and explaintion regarding WIXC and its current status. It's tough running any radio station these days in this economy. However, I have high expectations that the economy will turn around and radio will make vast improvements in near future.

Although WIXC has potential, it is limited growth potential. I can appreciate the position that Mr. Maduri is in right now, having recently made a sizable investment to acquire the AM 820 frequency and infrastructure for WWBA Tampa Bay. That station has much more growth potential than WIXC has in Brevard County, and it makes perfect business sense that he will concentrate most of his time and efforts on WWBA as that station has the highest ROI potential of all his stations.

Unless you (in the generic terms) have owned a radio station, faced with the responsibilty of meeting payroll and general operating expenses plus debt service on an ongoing monthy basis, then you (again in the generic term and not you personally) have no idea what it takes to really operate a station nor are you qualified to complain and question the decisions and motives of another radio station owner/operator. It's easy to be on the outside looking in and coming to a conclusion on limited knowledge and even fewer facts applicable to the situation. However that "looking in from the outside" conclusion doesn't make the conclusion factual as I believe you pointed out very well.

These Genesis talk properties have potential BUT the way they are ran make me wonder what the hell the end goal is here.

He had three talk sticks and could have started his own network and branched off into other markets, but instead he tweaks these stations in nonscensical ways.

I used to miror your thoughts ...heck, look back at my post in this thread...untill I saw first hand (really second) the crazy knee jerk decisions that any sane radio professional could see was leading to disaster....that is the problem, desperate people do desperate things and you can really see the character of a person when the going gets tough.

I run a small 5.000 am daytime sation as well as a couple of other FM's, In a close market to "Mims" Yet our billing since I took over that AM station, is well over the best months on the big powerful WIXC. So perhaps I didn't personally feel the pain of paying the power bill or payroll...what I (we) did was focus on results and getting them for our advertisters and making it a great experience for the listners. There's a bit more to it...like hiring good folks that know the format and letting them do their job with minimal interference...etc. but it's not rocket science.

My understanding is that None of the Genesis stations are doing well and formats continue to flip....it's easy to blame it on the economy but if memory serves me, there is one station in Tampa that has performed Ok, the rest haven't. even in good times
