107.1 FM

What's the verdict on 107.1, Major?
73s

Hey 954 - I keep forgetting to scan 107.1 while I'm in my car driving all around Homestead. Of course with such a weak signal I doubt I'll pick it up from way down here, but I haven't even tried yet. Tomorrow I'm driving up to Miami International Aeropuerto. I'm flying to Dallas for the weekend. If I remember to do so I'll give it a shot as I get closer to Miami. I shall pass on my findings once I return to the board on Sunday night.

P.S. While I'm in Dallas I plan to listen to 106.1-KISS-FM which appears to be a solid CHR-POP station that plays all types of hit music (unlike Y-100).

To quote myself:

OK so last Thursday afternoon I did indeed drive al aeropuerto de Miami, and while I was on the Dolphin Expressway approaching the planes I tuned in to 107.1 FM. To my shock I actually picked-up - DANCE MUSIC ! The very first song I heard was an extended version of The Village People's classic "Y.M.C.A.". It morphed into another club song, and the morphing continued with minimal deejay talk in-between. The signal sounded cheap and illegal - just like a typical pirate station operating out of some warehouse or office or home. But I liked what I heard. The signal actually got stronger as I pulled in to the airport, but then I lost the signal inside the parking garage - only to get it back louder and stronger than ever before high atop the 6TH floor roof of the Dolphin Parking Garage !

I then flew to Dallas - more on that in another post.

When I returned to Miami (and my car) I listened to 107.1 FM again. The signal obviously got weaker as I drove further away from the airport area, and then I lost it completely at right around the junction of the Palmetto & Don Shula Expressways approaching Kendall. The last song I heard was (ironically) "And The Beat Goes On" - the 1980 gold smash from The Whispers.

Based on what little I heard of it driving to and from the airport I can best describe it as a Miami club dance station - lots of freestyle and classics with a little bit of techno thrown in for good measure. It's a permanent preset on my car's stereo now, so whenever I'm en Miami (it doesn't happen very often) I'll check it out.

Incidentally once I got in to the Homestead area I experimented, and I picked-up what I thought I would pick-up on 107.1 FM - heavy static, echoes of 107.1-A1A out of Melbourne, and the occasional SMOOTH-JAZZ-107.1 bleeding-in from the Fort Myers area.

Major, you can hear 107.1FM on the internet on www.1club.fm or internet mobile at www.1club.fm/m I hear it in the car all the time on the internet using verizon unlimited verizon broadband and an FM modulator.

Thanks for the link. I just checked it out (online) and it works (and sounds) just fine. So not only is it now a preset on my car's stereo it is now a Favourite on my Internet Explorer web browser. I just went back to the original Miami New Times article (linked from the July 2006 edition of Radio Pages - blatant promo) regarding the low-power (not low-frequency) station. I'm surprised that 150 watts came in as strong as it did on my car's stereo from the airport to the Dolphin Expressway and onto the Palmetto towards the northern edge of Kendall !

So here I am drivin around Sunday in the Villager. I decided to jump on the 107.1 bandwagon and check those muthas out. I don't know what you people are tunin into, but I had some lady doing the Creole thing...LOUD AND PROUD!! I guess 107.1 is the Pirate Dejur frequency. If I ever choose to cross the border into Countees El Meeamee-Dades, i'll give it another shot.

Before this, my only run-in with Creole was a nice little dish mama used to make under the moniker "Shrimp Creole", and the only thing it ever said to me was EAT UP!

I've heard great things about KHKS, and from that, I think you'll definitely enjoy the station, Major!

Hey Josh,

I didn't get to hear as much as I wanted to of 106.1-KISS-FM in Dallas (my brother is a CD hog), but I liked what I heard. I consider them to be a solid CHR-POP station in the true sense of the format. It's no wonder that they are the # 2 station overall (so close to being # 1) in one of the most competitive radio markets in the entire nation. If 'KISS' can do it alli en Dallas then 'Y' can do it aqui en Miami. The demographics are so similiar.

I also heard a little bit of MIX-102.9. They are one of the best-sounding HOT-A.C. stations I have ever heard - and the key word is HOT. They play all of the hottest pop and rock hits of today (minus the crunk of course). They play more of today's hits than Y-100 !

HILARIOUS STUFF !

Just to confirm what you experienced I too know all about the 107.1 pirate(s) up there in Broward (and especially Palm Beach County). Actually in Palm Beach County there is a legitimate (licensed) Class-D translator at 107.1 FM that broadcasts at a wimpie 10 watts from a 500+ foot stick in the heart of West Palm Beach. 10 watts from 500+ feet - isn't that like shooting a rubber band in the air from the space shuttle launch site ? Anyway they are a gospel station (that also airs Creole programming), so you may have actually picked-up that station depending on how far north you were. It's signal (believe it or not) can reach the outskirts of Boynton Beach to the south and Jupiter to the north. Of course there are other pirates that love the 107.1 frequency here in the Pirates Of The Caribbean & South Florida. XM & Sirius listeners tend to use 107.1 down here as well as a favourite frequency to broadcast the signal within their vehicle (and beyond).

Major-Foist...welcome back! I live in South Broward, not far from I-595. It did sound pirate as compaired to a formatted station...but then again, and not to knock (too hard ) on our foreign friends, formatics aren't exactly their specialty!

As for 107.1 on the XM...I tried it, but wound up at the lower end of the XM band at 88.1 For me, it works like a charm in the Villager Cruiser. ;D

I tried to tune in one day last week when I drove to Boca. Wall to wall and treetops tall in FtL but starting to fade badly at the PB county line. Sounded like a Haitian pirate to me, too. BTW, they call their language Kreyol. To distinguish it from the food and the inhabitants of bayou country, I presume.

To get the official spelling if it's Kreyol or Creole, I walked next door to my Hatian neighbors house and asked him. His reply: "Turn on 107.1 and i'll answer that!"

HA-HA-HA ! I think you just found your next big opportunity in radio ! Ask your Haitian neighbours if you can take the 6 to 10 slot and show them your great big record album collection ! If you get the gig then I'll drive up-and-down I-595 and listen in ! :D

BTW, there's a 107.1 in the Bahamas.

If those pirates got off the air, maybe we could pick the Bahamians up when conditions are right.

Has anyone ever heard it?

BTW, this is about the AM stations of the Bahamas:

Don't confuse 107.1 "Dance" with that haitian station, LOL. Major, what do you mean by cheap???? ;)

Everything I've heard about them suggests that every 107.1 station we've mentioned on this thread is a pirate, save the Bahamian and the LP station in WPB.
