107.5 format change?

So that leaves.....4 OLDIES, 8,000 AC stations, and only 1 classic rock, 1 modern rock, and 1 Top 40 (Hot AC in my opinion) station in the area. No Rhythmic CHR, no Dance, no Urban?! Out 97 should be on the air more often

The format distribution in Binghamton isn't all that bad on the FM dial:
88.5 WCII Religion
89.3 WSKG-FM Classical / News
90.1 WIFF Christian Music
90.5 WHRW Educational
91.5 WSQX Jazz / News
92.5 WKGB-FM Rock
96.5 WPEL-FM Religious
98.1 WHWK Country
99.1 WAAL Classic Rock
100.5 WCDW Oldies
101.7 WLTB Hot AC
103.3 WMXW AC
104.1 WWYL CHR
105.7 WMRV-FM Hot AC
106.7 WRRQ AC
107.5 WBBI Classic Hits

What about urban? or dance? or a decent CHR that doesnt sound like a Hot AC? What makes it worse is Cool and Q flooded other frequencies that if another station were to be created, they can't. Unless by the some chance Equinox goes HD, they can "fill the format holes" and air their HD2 feed on their translators instead.

They would exist if there were a demand for them, and could turn a profit.
Right now, there is neither the demand nor the advertiser support.

I can understand for dance, but urban? Come on. At least a rhythmic CHR would make a sell. since most markets even ranked lower than Binghamton have a rhythmic CHR, or dance friendly CHR, or something similar to 103.5 KTU in NYC, or B 98.5 in the Jersey Shore.

Short spacing and such wouldn't allow class a b or c in the market. When the translators opened up we antied up the money, and made the effort. It was equal oppurtunity to do such the thing. ONe day we will have every frequecy in the market... it's our mantra... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... not.

Hd... hmmm what would the total cost for that be in this economy? and how many radio's are hd ready now?...1%-2%???

What's the roi on that?

Not down here in NE PA!!! With a new generation of lower cost HD broadcasting equipment out (and equipment companies ready to provide easier financing and better $$ incentives), with many more radio receiver choices and Ford offering HD as a standard upgrade option (among other car companies; MBenz, BMW, Kia, etc.), and the ability to rebroadcast an HD on an analog translator; things are just getting fired up!

I think the car manufacturers are the key to it... They should have just rolled them out sooner, particularly with XM getting an early jump in the car game. I have heard KRZ's legal ID for their HD for a long time, (over 2 years?) but how many casual listeners have a chance to grab the HD signal?

I think urban or even Rhythmic CHR would suffer the same fate as Alternative... (Power 101 - 1996 & 97 / CD-100 - later 90s) Formats like these can get a lot of loyal listeners, but are very hard to sell to advertisers. Back in '96 at Power, we had a lot of listeners, a lot of callers, and a number of vocal listeners who were annoyed when the format changed... I'm sure CD/Cool had the same issue later on... Still, for a standalone station or smaller group, it's hard to justify a format that is difficult to pitch to advertisers.

Once HD radio becomes a FREE and PASSIVE experience I'll be on board... That means I can reach down and turn on my factory installed car radio and have it receive clean HD signals that are already on the air.

No monthly fees... No receiver upgrade... That's the way I am, and the way millions of other lazy Americans are. Until then, I'll be enjoying analog FM unless it gets a mandatory shutdown.

Too bad, because I probably won't be driving an HD equipped 2011 car until about 2022... when it's a 'clunker' and I can pay cash for it!

Back to the actual topic of the thread... BIG 107.5!

At first, I was disappointed about this change, as I was an actual listener of 107five, the Bear. I do like listening to the classic rock format once in a while, and I find the music to be "pitched up" WAYYYY too much on WAAL. (3% or more?) Last time I heard them play Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac", I thought I had accidentally swallowed a pound of dark chocolate with my 24-ounce Mountain Dew! This always sent me to the right side of the dial for "The Bear", even if it was during the canned-sounding "Nights with Alice Cooper".

Like most surprise format changes, I managed to be on vacation during this one as well. I remember punching on the radio after I returned for a short drive to CVS and being surprised to hear Rod Stewart's "Have I Told You Lately". When it was followed by John Waite's "Missing You", (with no ID liner in between) I guessed that something must be up. It was confirmed to me the next day.

After listening to BIG for last couple of weeks, I actually like the format. My rough guesstimate (Wow, spellcheck actually approves of that word, but insists that 'spell check' is two words, but I digress...) is that about one-third of the play list is the same as 'The Bear'. The rest is interesting stuff that mostly would not qualify as 'classic rock', but might be acceptable to the same audience. While I wince a bit when they play Gladys Knight & the Pips "Midnight Train to Georgia", and even Michael J's "Billie Jean", I can usually stop myself from hitting the seek button knowing that a classic Fleetwood Mac or Boston track will probably be up next.

In all, a good job guys... I hope it works out for a while.

Hmmm... Still like the format, but disappointed to hear the generic 'satellite jocks' talking up the breaks in most dayparts.

I would rather hear local voicetracked talent, or even jockless like it was.

Is this a 'pre-programmed' format like Premium Choice?

Okay, so if the listeners are there, that means Power must've had good ratings. I thought advertisers look at the books to see if there are a good amount of people listening and how long they tune in regards of the format especially the M-F dayparts.

W277BS in Ithaca is using their 103.3 translator broadcasting their WYXL-HD2 feed which is CHR (Hits 103.3) and I'm sure there are 0.5% listening to 97.3 HD2. Just an example.

So a station like this:

http://radiotime.com/station/s_9428/B_985.aspx

or a station like this:

http://lightningstream.surfernetwork.com/Media/player/view/wwac_tgsl4.asp?call=wwac

or even this station:

http://player.streamtheworld.com/_players/pamal/?callsign=WSPKFM

would not sell in the Binghamton market when all other CHR's are starting to lean this direction.
