What level of experience are you seeking?

If you're unsure of a format, I'd refer you to the management of Route 81, which has a legacy of building successful talk stations from the ground up.

LOLOL Thinkingman, I see that Santa did not bring you that personality that you asked for this year. Oh well. Maybe next year.

Maybe if he would have listened to WHYL when they played xmas music santa would have been nicer to him.<P ID="signature">______________

For my money, "cheap" and "Route 81" are practically synonymous.

If I'd have listened to WHYL when they played Christmas music, I'd have doubled their cume.

Joe, stop being so defensive. If you were still at WLAN, would you chirp every time someone took a slam at Cheap Cha ... er, Clear Channel?

Let the bitterness go, paisan. Let it go.

Ladies and Gentleman, this has been one of the most inane threads I have ever seen here, especially considering how it started. As the PA Dutch say... "eye eye eye..."<P ID="signature">______________

Like the '06 Eagles...no defense intended. Just thought that of all the owners, 'Cheap' Channel being one (though they never treated me cheaply, but I digress...), it seems formulaic to take a shot at route 81. Oh well, at least we're not still getting blamed for those Pro-Life spots. Guess I should take what I can get. BTW... what does everyone here think of the law W. signed on Monday about anonymous flaming online? Just curious.

I dont think there is anything anonymous about flaming. But I can't figure out how they stay up on those heals.

Flame On!

I'm sorry, Joe. In your universe any criticism of Route 81 is flaming?

And you think it's unfair to blame Route 81 for those anti-abortion spots? Get real! Those were the most tasteless things I ever heard on the radio - the audio equivalent of anti-abortion protesters sticking pictures of aborted fetuses in people's face. Those spots were enough to make me nostalgic for the Fairness Doctrine.

You "flame" people and organizations on your program. If you can't take it, don't dish it out.

No. As long as we've earned it or are currently doing something worth critisizing, be my guest. Actually, I wish you would. Be my guest, that is. But you never call. *sigh*

I've actually never even heard them first hand and that's my point. They've been gone for quite a while now, move on.

Yes I do, but in my world everyone knows my name and where to find me.

Re: Flame On!

***Considering WHYL is now on its 4th format in less than 2 years, perhaps the company should have been named "Roulette 81 Radio"?

WHYL earning two consecutive 0.4 12+ ratings is what I call "earning it," especially after the hype it got on this message board. Route 81 is the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of Harrisburg radio.

Watch this one... In a way, I agree with some of what you say. Now this is the opinion of an 18-year radio vet who just happens to work at one of Route 81's other stations and is not privy to any of the business that they do. (I actually had to e-mail Sam through his Radio-Info address!)

WHYL's in Carlisle with a majority of the books in tab going to areas where there signal doesn't even go. So they cannot ever 'make good numbers' in Arbitron. I don't think WHYL should be marketed as a Harrisburg station any more than WCOJ should be pitched as a Philly station. I'm not privy to how they approach the market at 'HYL so I will refer back to my time with 'LAN as an example. Can people hear WLAN in parts of the H'burg metro? Yes. In enough of it to be considered a 'Harrisburg station? No. If that's how they marketed themselves they would have lost Lancaster and not gained Harrisburg. So the numbers a suburban station needs to worry about aren't the ones tracked by arbitron. If WHYL's sales staff hits the streets they'll make the money.

Re: Flame On!

OK, So I have to give you that. Lloyd, Gavin, Bob, whoever was churning things awhile back could not really make up their minds. WHYL did do a Titanic type of nose dive, and some of the people hung on to the life rafts, others jumped ship. WHYL is not the first station to have a history like this, and it won't be the last. Wound licking has been done, and a new Captain has boarded the ship. And this captain, for those of you who do not know his history, has a very steady history of turning things around. The uptick in the most recent book was nominal at best, but its a start.Other Route 81 stations in NEPA are also experiencing new growth, from the posts on those pages. As said before, anythings possible.

Giving the devil his due

In all fairness, IMHO flipping from adult standards to talk in the Harrisburg market sounds like a valid business decision. That said, talk formats do take time to establish themselves and the new management might well have given their talk format more time to do. I have no inside information but some former Adult Standards stations have caved to geezer protests ("heck no, we won't go"). If that's the case here, it's a heck of a way to run a station. I think the tack Joe is taking in Coatesville, with a LOCAL morning show, and advice and lifestyle talk the rest of the day, might have made sense in Harrisburg as well; certainly more sense than putting third rate syndicated hosts up against stronger competition on established talk stations.

PS: Joe, I'd call but Joe Hawk is such a tough act to follow. ;)
And I'd recommend you did a couple of those "abortion is evil" out of the archives and listen. In a way they were well produced and powerful stuff but you might also understand why they have left such a lasting bad taste in some people's mouths. If the purpose of these spots was to shock and inflame, they succeeded.
