107.9 HD3

How long has KMLE been simulcasting KOOL-FM on HD3? I'm new to PHX, but just noticed this now. If they've been doing this for a while, what's the point? Both seem to have city grade signals.

Maybe a placeholder for the launch of Audacy's sports betting network here?

or testing ahead of leasing out the subchannnel to someone running a translator. Either way, it's not meant to be permanent, it's just more pleasant for engineering to listen to than a 1k tone.

I'm reminded of the time one of the stations I've worked for was testing out a HD2 before leasing it out using a loop of the engineer's favorite songs. Half of the people on one of these boards was convinced it was a new format. Nope, Andy likes to test with songs he knows what they're supposed to sound like when he's setting processing.

Could also be the upcoming return of the “Commercial Free Christmas” format KMLE has put on their HD-2 sub channel for many years now. Time will tell!

Just what the market needs...another Sports Parking Lot! The Nurse and I think you may be right as to make the network work, they need Phoenix. Interesting that KQFN 15~Eighty is now using "Arizona's Sports Betting Station". There's a lot of $$ in sports betting.

Sports betting is the latest scheme for taxing people with low to moderate income instead of taxing the rich. No wonder Gov. Ducey likes the idea. I'm not sure how a radio station might fit into the betting process. The station broadcasts the odds and then tells listeners to download some app to place a bet?

Of course, the solution to that is: Don't bet on sports. It's worse than dropping a couple bucks on Power Ball tickets.

I'm not against it, if one has the means and wants to blow some money for whatever reason. But it's not a good idea for lower-income people, ever. Personally, other than beer bets with friends, I refuse to bet on anything where I can't influence the outcome, good or bad. I can do that in a casino when playing video poker, but not on a sporting event.

Aren't all HD 2 and 3 channels just placeholders at this point? Low-effort secondary stations or simulcasts of other company properties from other markets, peppered with a few pet projects...none of which are generating all that much in the way of revenue.

On the one hand, if they're going to make money off the signals, it's about time.

On the other hand, if it's just a 24/7 commercial for a sports betting outfit...?

That'd be the 'punch line' of the hard-sell.

The discussion (five minutes, 8 minutes...whatever...) in discussing a particular game is what keeps the low-educated listener engaged until the odds are revealed.

Meanwhile, the discussion is peppered with inane facts that made the bookmaker pick the odds they did for any given match.

Lather, rinse, repeat for each game. Certainly talk up the sponsor as often as possible, and heavily promote the app (the app!) for everyone to get in on the action - and don't miss out!

So, 30 minute show on NHL, 60 minutes on NBA, 90 on the NFL.** Run that on a loop...and you have a morning of programming.

** I'm sure I've oversimplified the process, but it's a total generalization on how a programmer might consider such an endeavor.

Audacy has "strategic partnerships" with several sports betting operations. Here's one:

So that's talk radio programming built around various aspects of sports betting. And then there's this:

I don't know about anyone else, but sports betting was a big conversation point during Thanksgiving dinner, with all the NFL games going on. Betting on the team, the score, the players, and anything else.

KQFN has affiliated with VSIN (a sports betting radio network), and now airs content from them middays and evenings. The programming is worse than what CBS Sports Radio network shows it replaced, but there's probably a monetary incentive for them. I don't know who I'd rather listen to at 2pm if I don't like 98.7's programming at that time: the sports guys selling cars on 910 or the betting show on 1580.

It was put on pre-Entercom/Audacy, want to say it was before 2017 but ES could confirm as he put in on the air. HD2 was mainly used for big events, Country Thunder and Birds Nest; otherwise it was just commercial free country.

107.9 HD2 was a Tim & Willy-branded Classic Country station for a year or two when they started broadcasting HD in 2007.

Speaking of Classic Country, probably a good idea for Hubbard's 92.7 translator, now that The Wow Factor has stolen their current audience.

YIKES!

KDKB HD~Too originates programming for both Lumberyard 14~Forty and Oldies 92~Seven. Los Buckeye Boyz don't think Mother Hubbard would know what to do with Country ratings as all they sell are Rock ratings. Mom's KSLX HD~Too gets a pass with KDUS programming as there's no translator involved.
