1110 New Format

It wouldn't be the first time a Charlotte station did that just to keep from going silent.

WHVN 1240 (1000 watts, previously Christian talk) had been silent for as long as allowed but came back in November 2020 with music that had been on co-owned WAVO 1150 (simulcast partner after 2018 once the music could no longer produce enough listener donations) until they could sell the station to a Christian broadcaster.

WAVO is now doing CCM as part of the Billy Graham organization, which I assume really wanted the translator.


Maybe you said this, but if so, my eyes (or ears in my case) missed it. What is 'HVN doing these days?

Yeah really. I saw a news story (well, a couple come to think of it) about songs done completely by AI and one entire um, artist being nothing but AI. The song was Country and the artist (air quotes, as my oldest son would say) is CCM, I believe.
 
I haven't checked lately but last time I checked, Spanish Christian.


Gotcha. So, that means you've got them on 1240 in Charlotte and just twenty KC up the dial, one in Kings Mountain doing the same thing.

Very interesting. The tempo is a little slow. They must be doing something right. I heard the 'presenter' say that 14 Feb was their 11th birthday.

Good thing they have enough outliers to support them. I may send them a few quid. (they are based in the UK)

Thanks, done found and posted. Reckon I had heard all of it (thought there was more), on that DX Audio Service tape, 'cause it's only 40 secs LOL. Anybody else ever heard that one before? Looks like it's kinda new to some folk.
 
It seems to me we should be putting heads together, not butting heads. Programmers like you have the experience. Interested listeners like me have the ideas (although I am sure you have ideas of your own as well). We should be focusing on how an idea COULD work, instead of why they WON'T work - especially when my overall interest is not necessarily what you or I want, but what broadcast radio is going to need.
The problem or issue here is that you are talking about ideas that come from people in the business. When we want to try format ideas, the important thing is not prejudicing our decisions with insider perspectives.

When Emmis bought an AM and FM in Argentina, the FM was pretty much last among full market stations. So we created over 30 different "sample pods" of music varieties and blends of varieties and had a large sample of listeners in the age groups that ad agencies bought listen, score and comment them.

This was a variant on "awareness, trial, usage" where first they were asked how much they liked or disliked each pod of songs they heard. Then they were asked if they were aware of any radio station that sounded like that / played that sort of music all the time. Then they were asked if they became aware of a station doing that, would they give it a try. Then the question was "if a new station played music all in that style and range, would you listen (from "not at all" to "all the time"). Finally, for those saying they would listen a lot, they were asked if they would stop listening to stations they used now, or just share with them.

We found a music type that nobody had attempted before, all rock by Argentine artists. It went from "worst to first" in less than 3 weeks. The listeners told us what to do, and we did it.
 
Additional ideas for your consideration:

We obviously don't know what Radio One's ultimate plan is for 1110. Making the assumption they are not going to sell it or turn in the license and are merely awaiting a couple of weeks to flush the frequency before starting something new, it would be important to prevent 1110 from being forgotten, and might present an opportunity to deal with a real problem of kids not listening to the radio at all: Go into the high schools and promote the idea for the students to get their big show biz break with a popup format on 1110. Radio One ultimately doesn't care how good or bad it is, and the opportunity to be 'on the radio' might pique the kid's interest. If Mecklenburg County Schools could get involved somehow to ride herd on the idea, it could build goodwill with the citizens of Charlotte. This idea would only work if Radio One's new format is going to be several months off, as implementing it would take some time, but it might not cost too much, and could provide some interest in radio for the younger set. Content could be anything from kids wanting to be a DJ, to the school band or theater group wanting to do their thing.

Secondly, and this one might be in line with what Radio One's core interest is. It has been my opinion that the Black Information Network has been a waste of space. Their original mission was "Our Voices Will Be Heard." If ratings are any indication, they aren't being heard. Leaning a little on my Entertainment Radio idea, I believe there are plenty of Black writers who would welcome a place to get their word heard. August Wilson wrote a whole series of plays on the Black Experience in America. These could be a place to start for stories, and with the Wilson estate's permission, maybe a core for continuing series using the characters he created. The corporate sponsors of BIN might be a place to start for advertisers. It would be different from BIN, as it is Entertainment with a purpose, not narrowly focused news.

Whether they mean to or not, the impression being created is that whatever they were going to do fell through with.

I get the impression most (not all) commercial broadcasters dislike Public Radio seeing it as unfair competition. Also WFAE is doing fine and doesn't need it.
