I just posted this on my
Facebook page:
Today I had the opportunity to visit the Charlotte headquarters of the Bible Broadcasting Network (BBN). During my visit, I toured the facility, learned more about the network's operations, and had the chance to ask questions about some of the recent changes in Charlotte radio.
A big thank you to Executive Director Carl Redemann and Business Manager Jason Padgett for taking the time to show me around and answer my questions. The facility is impressive, but what stood out most was how welcoming and gracious everyone was.
Our conversation included BBN's recent acquisition of 100.9 FM from Urban One. The station is now WYFQ-FM and holds a construction permit to move its transmitter site and city of license from Indian Trail to Weddington. BBN hopes to have 100.9 FM upgraded and operating from the new site by the end of the year.
We also discussed the future of WYFQ 930 AM. Carl and Jason acknowledged that the nearly 20-acre transmitter site on Tar Heel Road in Charlotte is being marketed for sale. While the long-term future of the frequency remains uncertain, they expressed hope that a buyer can be found for the license and that the station can continue serving Charlotte from a new transmitter location.
I also asked whether Urban One had offered 1110 AM as part of its divestiture efforts. I was told that it had, but acquiring the station would have required relocating its transmitter site from Nations Ford Road. Carl and Jason explained that, given the realities of today's radio marketplace, purchasing 100.9 FM ultimately made more sense for BBN than acquiring 1110 AM.
It was a fascinating discussion and an enjoyable visit. I appreciate Carl and Jason sharing their time, insights, and perspective on an evolving chapter in Charlotte radio. I also left with a few very thoughtful gifts, which was certainly appreciated.
