12 channel cable systems

KEKR-TV is today's KSMO-TV (MY) channel 62, sister station of KCTV-TV (CBS) channel 5. I see KSHB-TV channel 41 was mentioned. I'm certain that they were a FOX station first and are NBC today.

Yes, KSHB became FOX in 1987. By then we had really upgraded to a new TV, no push-button box, and 36 channels.

A noncommercial station which places a digital noise limited service contour (“NLSC”), see section 47 C.F.R. § 73.622(e) of the Commission’s rules, over a cable system's

Could one of you engineering types translate this? ;D

This is the current Time Warner Cable lineup in Put-In-Bay, OH, a resort island about 30 miles NE of Toledo close to the maritime Canadian border. I think TWC bought out a smaller operator in the area at some point in the 2000s. There are no digital or HD options.

Port Clinton (the "mainland" Ohio city where ferries to Put-In-Bay depart from) has a much more robust TWC lineup including digital/HD, and a basic lineup including stations from Toledo, Cleveland, Detroit, and even CBC from Windsor.

Why did the old analog cable systems skip from channels in the 20s or 30s all the way to the upper 90s? That numbering pattern was common everywhere on ATSC unscrambled cable.

To be brief, it means a signal strong enough to overcome atmospheric noise.

For an order-of-magnitude approximate estimate, according to the old "Curves" program the "NLSC" for WTTW, the PBS station in Chicago, is 87km or about 52 miles.

Where I lived at the time, 98 was HSN and 99 was QVC. I'm curious how many other cable systems stuck the home shopping channels that far up the dial. :)

Amazing that Put-In-Bay has no Canadian or Detroit channels on its line-up, even though being on an island in Lake Erie would have provided an advantage for such reception.

You're not kidding - in fact, I visited PIB in 2010 and my AT&T cell phone roamed over to a Canadian TELUS signal (presumably from Point Pelee, Ontario's southernmost point).

Given the relative cost and difficulty of reaching the island for system maintenance, and the small number of subscribers (especially since the few residential areas seem to have a lot of sat dishes, and cottages/resorts all have or advertise satellite service) TWC probably didn't see a benefit to upgrading the cable system in the area - and probably wanted to clear as many cable networks as possible on that tiny system rather than additional local channels.

But yeah, that is an optimal location for picking up a lot of signals. Would love to go back again soon with my Tecsun radio.
