1260 / 104.9 Austin will probably remain sports

They're down to just one host on every show except at noon, right? That's a pretty big savings right there. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up dumping everything local except a.m. and p.m. drive.

Isn't 104.9 moving back to Dripping Springs?

Well, yes, supposedly. They still would be licensed to Bee Cave but the transmitter site would be along 290 about four miles east of Dripping Springs. That's providing they actually build it out, or course; the construction permit for the move was approved back in February.

Here's the present coverage map:

Now the proposed coverage:
www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KTXX&service=FM&status=C&hours=U

If anyone is wondering why they would do this, you're certainly not alone.

It certainly would. All three of them---97.1, 105.5 and 106.5---would be outside the primary station's coverage area.

Erin announced the new lineup that's starting Monday - Mike and Mike, Cowherd, Chad Hastings (noon-3), Erin and Shawn (3-7)

That's nice. Unlike 104.9 do any of them at least pretend to cover Austin?

I heard Shawn mention something today about an article he had written being posted on a new section of the stations's website. Didn't pick up the name, but it sounded like it was (or is going to be) a competitor to Orangebloods and since Orangebloods is part of the rivals.com family which is owned by Yahoo Sports, I bet the new owners and ESPN in general weren't all that comfortable giving a direct competitor (Yahoo Sports Radio) indirect publicity.

Organebloods.com is owned by Yahoo Sports? I am surprised ESPN had not moved before this. ESPN must not have known.

So 1300The Zone will own the morning slot especially with football right around the corner. Chad will go up against Jim Rome (thats a toss up) and both will have local talent battling it out on the drive home. The 1300AM afternoon pair seems forced, they do not jive well together. Advantage ESPN.

Not sure if they're owned outright by yahoo, but they are a part of rivals.com which is and they proudly display Yahoo Sports on the main menu. I did wonder about it, but since I'm not all that interested in the longhorns, I only visited the site once or twice. I just figured that the orangeblood guys were paying to be on the air, especially since they weren't all that good.

The bottom line was that Orangebloods was the main reason they were able to stay with the sports format for so long. The station was essentially Orangebloods radio and I think they propped it up financially a little bit or at least helped with some co-op sales. Erin Hogan was (is) the PD but I think that Ketch was able to use a lot of influence to get things done how he wanted them. Not that it was a bad thing. They had the most local content and spent more time talking about the Longhorns then the Longhorn Station did. The problem was that UT Athletics does not like Orangebloods at all and would have had them banished from the kingdom if they could which caused a lot of tension. So, when Border started divesting of stations and this group of investors came in (4 guys I think) one of two things happened: either the new owners were close to the UT program and got rid of Orangebloods at UT's behest or they just didn't want to share the decision making with the Orangebloods folks. Sean Adams by the way had just not too long ago switched from writing for Orangebloods to writing for ESPN.com so that kept him off the chopping block. Not sure why Chance Mock was let go. I don't believe he was affiliated with Orangebloods directly. As for the new lineup, part of the deal they had with ESPN was to clear ESPN Deportes and the regular ESPN programming which they had been doing with 1530 and 1260, but now they only have 1260 so I think they are airing Mike and Mike and Cowherd to try and appease ESPN. It remains to be seen what will happen with that contract.

So do the new owners know about ESPN's views on affiliates running gentlemen's club ads? Listening to them the past few days, there are MANY ads that would seem to be in violation of the "agreement", unless ESPN has relaxed those rules? ;)

Thanks for the indept post. I can't get 104.9 in Georgetown and listen to AM station. Are they still broadcasting sports on 104.9?

On a side note, I am listening to 1260 AM right now ,and I am hearing ESPN's nationally syndicated Van Pelt's show. Where is the new lineup?

I caught the tail end of an announcement this morning saying starts in August, if I heard correctly.
That's what I heard. The nooner is going to run from12-1 and Van Pelt from 1-3 until Aug, Once Hastings gets back the new show will go from 12-3.
