1260/540 The Shuffle

I am listening to 1260/The Shuffle. First, this is NOT a format change, but a refinement of the format. They are still running the same 50-60's nuggets that they have been running for the last few months, plus some 70s-80s-90s And I am enjoying it!!!

There are great oldies that are not being heard on most mainstream oldies stations. And I still think Saul is making a mistake not going after K-EARTH on a promotional level.

Yes, surprisingly it sounds good. However the one that hit me right out of left field, is that they're including dance music ala Thump Radio. About 9:00 A.M. there was a piece of music that was a couple of songs linked together Thump Radio style. In the middle of the piece the music morphed into the Miami Vice theme then segued into a New Order song then back to straight music.
Miami Vice!

Too bad. I liked the pure oldies format. It sounded great coming out of my old bakelite AM radio, and it was even educational for those of us not alive back then. We already have enough stations playing 70's/80's/90's.

Not to worry, though, it'll be something different soon enough, right?
Edited by scoot on 06/13/05 09:55 PM.

Sounds good? Say what? This station is a MESS. Some of the worst imaging I've ever heard. And the jocks suck.

I drove by their studios today and the signal sucks as bad as the station.

I totally have to agree with you on this. The station is a total mess. Besides having one of the worst signals I've heard, the jocks are totally out of sync with the new format they are doing now. This morning they were playing some very obscure mid 80's dance songs that sounded horrible. They even managed to play one song twice within ten minutes. If Saul Levine wanted to do something different he should have just added 70's songs to the playlist and went after KEARTH with a vengence. We already have enough 80's & 90's stations already. If he wants to compete with the fm stations he needs to get a better signal and spend money on promoting the station. But of course, this format will change in a few months like all the other ones he has tried out.

Don't mince words, how do you really feel?
Seriously, what the studios look like has nothing to do with how good or bad a station sounds, though it is always nicer for the employees to like their surroundings. The question is why does the imaging and programming sound so bad to you? Probably because they have no budget. That's the way a lot of mom & pop stations sounded before the big companies came in. It's obvious that a lot of what they do is in house. Most stations now farm out their imaging.
They could do better, but Saul runs his stations on a shoestring. But hey that’s' not so bad. It's one of the ways to turn a profit.

Where in my post did I mention anything about the studios. I've previously posted their studios are a closet but not this time. Anyone who has ever worked in Los Angeles radio should head over to this junk heap and see how the other half lives (oddly in Westwood).

You are making a contradicting statement. First you say that the (poor) studios have nothing to do with the sound of the station then you say no budget has something to do with the station. In my "dues" paying years, I worked at a few toilets (mom & pops) with no budgets that sounded as good as L.A. radio because we knew how to make it sound "big" and professional. This is Los Angeles and I know who works at this station. It could sound MUCH, MUCH, better than it does. So NO excuses. The station just plain sucks. It has no chance of anything except another format change.

Look, its Saul...he'll find something for those K-Mozart guys to do. And you Can get great jingle packs for cheap. Those things can be taken care of.

And if you want a good signal, come up to North Valley, where 'SUR has its tower.

But, DAY-YUMM, I have not hear a lot of this music on AM in a long while. From my fingers, to Saul's ears, I'll gladly work graveyard in WLA, just to get my hands on all this great stuff.

Don't know about about you, but just as I was going to lose hope, radio has the potential to sound FUN again.

Oh....by the way Saul.....you CAN change the website now....

Three certainties in life...

Death, taxes, and Saul flipping.

You know he flips alot when you have to ask if he is stunting or if this is the new format.

What stations sound good to you and why? Maybe it will take the owner time to
fine tune this mess?

You don't know Saul, Allison. His idea of fine tuning is using the channel select knob.

A buddy of mine who worked for him called it "The Spinning Wheel of Formats." Oh-oh - it's been three books! Time to spin the Wheel of Formats and see what's next.

Oooh! Hot Ukrainian!

Well said.

Yep. Once you demoralize the airstaff, you'll never get the spark back. These guys know what's eternally on the horizon, and they just don't care anymore.

Actually, since everyone on this sight takes every word so literally, I believe when you said you drove by the studios, you, I'm guessing, meant the building that the studios are housed in. I too have worked at stations that had poor facilities (building and studios) that sounded great because of the wonderful staff. I think that 1260/540 has no budget when it comes to talent. Having never been inside the building I can't say what condition the "studios" are in, but you're right, for the location it is a dumpy looking building, that is if by "junk heap" you meant the building. But hey, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Also, since 1260 is a San Fernando Valley signal it would sound awful in Westwood.
Personally I think Saul will keep changing formats till the day he meets his maker. He just can't leave the stations alone, and that's another reason why he doesn't bring in great talent. Who wants to move here for a guy who'll probably fire them after a few months. I have a friend who left a great paying job to go to work for Saul and he lasted 3 weeks because they decided to change formats again after he started working there.

I just turned it on. I didn't know about this. The station sounds like it was programmed by Kay Starr
trying to be hip--as in hip replacement. I can't believe this. Hey, what happened to their late night
comedy programming?

Even the sound quality sounds degraded. Sounds like...sounds like....I'm listening to a bad AIP Teen
Horror flick through drive-in movie speakers.

At this point I rather they just start over and play Johnny Cash 24/7.

My luck I'd get Johnny Paycheck.

What do you think I meant? That I drove my car into the front lobby and up and down the hallway where the studios are?

No, I meant the whole facility.

KGIL at the old transmitter site had an excellent signal in West Los Angeles.

That's not the only reason. It's because he's cheap. But if he did oldies on FM he'd have plenty of talent begging for jobs, regardless.

Who wants to move here for a guy who'll

If you drove in to Saul's Compound

>>What do you think I meant? That I drove my car into the front lobby and up and down the hallway where the studios are?<<

If you did this Glen, and I'm not saying you would, you first need to enter the locked down Ground Floor, so that they can Buzz you & your Car up in the Elevator. It's high Security over there, mostly to keep out the disgruntled former Workers!

Now you're just being smart-alecky. Do you like to argue just for the sake of it? No don't answer that, I already know.

Now you're contradicting yourself after taking me to task over the same thing...

Apparently it doesn't anymore...

I'm done with this thread. Levine doesn't deserve anymore time over yet another stupid format shift, and who needs to nitpick over what's been said.
Of course I'm sure that you'll have a comeback to get in the last word...

The nickname I hear most often when discussing Saul and 1260 is "Format of the Month Club". Same concept.
