1320 WENN off air?

I heard from a friend in the area that 1320 WENN has been off the air for a few days, and that prior to going off, it was dead air for 'weeks'. Call me crazy (everyone else does) but shouldn't the translator it's feeding also be off if the parent ceases broadcasting for any reason? As far as I know, "Y'all FM" W271BN has continued on, unencumbered by the rules. I kind of expect a shady small town operator who thinks he knows what's what to pull this sort of shenanigans, but a big broadcasting company like Summit ought to know better.

Since they should know better, I'm wondering if they quietly swapped the feed of W271BN from the AM to an HD subchannel. I was hoping someone in the B'ham area (that's "Birmingham" for those you from out of town and living under a rock) could do a bandscan and see if that's what happened.

Of course with the state of AM these days, it really shouldn't surprise me even when someone who should know better neglects the rules and a station this bad.

I couldn't tell you want happened but probably they swapped out "Y'all FM's feed to WEZZ 97.3 HD 3.

A STA might of been posted. It just takes awhile to show up on the FCC database. There are several AM's off the in the state with no STA's filed. If they were filed I can't find them.

"A STA might of been posted".

To those of you with the ability to check on STA's,
please see what is going on with WFHK 1430 Pell City.
They have been running only on their 94.9 translator
since the AM tower fell in August 2013.

Their station logo no longer shows 1430.

Did they upgrade to FM-only or...what?
Thanks in advance.

Just got off the phone with Summit Media and they were able to tell me it is now being relayed off WEZZ 97.3 HD 3 and not 1320 WENN anymore.

The last STA the owners filed for was in 2010 and I think it was related to a forfeiture order/NAL issue being completed. There's certainly nothing new listed, the last renewal going through was in 2012. It still says it's owned by Stocks Broadcasting, which is the party that bought it way back in 2001. So if there's a new owner, they never notified the FCC. And even though they were supposedly using a longwire as a temporary antenna, it appears such an exemption was never posted on the FCC site. I recognize that the Feds are slow but it's been, what… a year and change since WFHK's tower fell? Surely something would be posted by now.

If there's another source for STA info, I don't know about it.

As for WENN, no STAs on display there either. I was impressed with the way the stations were run under Cox's ownership, but now I'm beginning to wonder if the same people now under the Summit banner are really trying.

WFHK ran on a longwire for a time after the tower fell. One
end was attached to the back of the studio, the other to a
power pole "on loan" from Ala. Power until the nearby bridge
construction was finished.

The AM transmitter was rated at 5 kw but was run at 1 kw
due to a lightning hit earlier when the tower was still standing.

One of the facts of Broadcasting is the need to reach as many
ears as possible,be it AM or FM or streaming.
Their translator does not go places where the AM did, hence
less listeners and presumably lost revenue.

Perhaps it will be interesting some of these days when
someone from Atlanta stops by to admire the new tower.

Very interesting.

If you check the Facebook page it still shows WFHK 1430 AM as well as 94.9 FM (The River).

It shows the same with the FCC website.

I think how they are getting around this is by keeping the 94.9 translator at a
construction permit status yet operating it by itself secretly. Originally the 94.9
translator was 150 watts but now 30 watts (on water tank hill) after apparently making some sort of
deal with CC since they launched Rock 94.9 on the same frequency. This is apparently
how they have got WFHK and its translator at construction permit status and are operating
the translator secretly without operating the AM frequency.

Guess someone at Summit Media must be reading the RD forums because WENN has once again reappeared at 1320.
