1340 WHAT

So this is the end it seems. Going to miss this station big time, have been a vocal supporter of them and their format since day #1.
Great personalities plus that distinctive local feel.

Wonder what the new format will be....................?

?

Listening to the stream right now, and it sounds normal. Was there an announcement made?

What specifically has happened today or this week to prompt your comment? I know it's the end of the year, but I wouldn't mourn the station just yet based on a comment made weeks ago in a newspaper article.

Since I cannot receive the signal at night, I just now pulled up the online feed. This brings about a few comments:

The pop-up player has a station logo I know **I've** never seen before. Much better than the one that's been on the website, and much more appropriate for what the format has been. Good choice of color, and easy-to-read typeface. Most importantly, the frequency is most prominent. Why am I just **now** seeing this logo?

The pop-up player keeps bringing itself up to the top of the screen-- even as I'm typing this. How obnoxious. I've already had to re-minimize it several times, as it totally interrupts what I'm doing. Who would put up with this? That's a deal-breaker.

The website **still** has the banner with the artists from the short-lived Martini format. Queen Latifah?

The on-air branding ("imaging" as it's called today) doesn't really "work" with the format. Something just doesn't sound right hearing lasers and swooshes going into a Roger Whittaker record.

The music mix is pretty good. There are some oldies played during the week that don't quite fit, in my opinion. But overall, a very enjoyable set of selections.

The personality on right now (he hasn't given his name!) has a very nice voice. I'm usually rather critical of voices, but this fellow (who sounds kind of young-- and that's okay) has the perfect one for the format. He's a bit more upbeat/Hot-AC-ish that I'd be, but for the most part he's pretty good. But what's his name?

If this station's days are indeed numbered-- and I have no doubt they are-- it's still a shame. This has been one of the only terrestrial music stations I've listened to with any regularity in the last few years.

Hi George,

When Mike Bowe was on the air earlier this evening he said that this was his last show. Ditto when Elaine wrapped up her portion, said last show....................

One of their promos said that tonight is their final broadcast.

Hope I'm wrong.

Happy New Year to all.

Well that certainly answers my question. Thanks for that news, sad as it is.

My best to the staff. I hate seeing good talent sitting on the sidelines, unless retirement is the wish of the people involved. And as strangely-managed as the station was-- there's no question it was one of the last collections of great on-air talent in Philadelphia radio.

So I guess this means that ether the station is history or changing formats.

Sad indeed. Mike Bowe's Happy Hour feature has Tom Moran, my ALL time favorite, on as "Marty the Bartender", and he concurred saying that "this bar is closing forever".

Tonight I happened to find myself in a situation that required me to drive from one end of WHAT's night signal to the other. At 60 m.p.h. that pretty much gave me a good half-hour or so of listening to the automation. I heard a very enjoyable mix of '60s- and '70s-era MOR staples. I'll miss this, at least until I get broadband in the car.

I do believe a new format is coming; I don't think the transmitter is being turned off.

Could WPHT's re-branding as "Talkradio 1210" be partially to head off another station from using the "Talkradio" name?

Note that, at least during the hours between nine and noon (Glenn Beck), WHAT's signal is a lot better than many us give it credit for. In the Spring and Summer, it's the same deal for three to six in the afternoon (Hannity). Just saying.

1340: The Small Talker! ::)

As of this morning, the web feed is still the old WHAT mix, and it sounds good as usual. A talk format, picking up Beck and/or Hannity would be a smart move.

Re: 1340 WHAT- Are we sure

I didn't hear Mike and Elaine say anything, so I can't confirm nor deny that portion, but anytime I've tuned in this weekend, it sounds like business as normal. They are even playing LaSalle basketball at the moment.

Are we sure something is going down, or is this just speculation?

Re: 1340 WHAT- Are we sure

Yes, both Elaine and Mike said that it was their last show. Last night's show should have been Mike Bowe and Dancing Dan, as it was shown on their website. Instead just normal music was played.

Additionally, I heard that all staff members were let go on December 6 as the station was sold. I was sad to hear that to say the least.

I think Nick was referring to the short-lived running of "HD" on the signal during its brief Skin Radio era of Modern Rock.

Again, the signal is about as good as a 1kw graveyarder around here could be. Compared with 1480, it's a powerhouse. Problem is, for Conservative Talk, it doesn't hit the right areas.

But for the purposes of market clearance, it certainly would get the "Philadelphia" job done.

Program director Jim Clark was on this morning as usual with his morning show. The few minutes I caught certainly sounded live.

For what it's worth...

Well, Mike and Elaine are on the air now and it sounds live. Mike was making some kind of cryptic remark like "Are we supposed to behere?" So who knows what's going on.
