Today's radios are better equipped to pick up AM than before. I mention this because of the DIGITAL TUNER.

How much I would have loved to have had a digital tuner when trying to listen to the ball game from out of town on AM while growing up.

To put it bluntly, IBOC and the HD Radio Alliance are killing AM Radio. Normal radios turn the hybrid signal into total crap. No way anyone will want to listen to a muddled and buzzing signal. HD Radios don't sell, period. It's a failed technology that won't hurt FM as much as its' murdering AM with a machete.

Worse still, the HD Radio Alliance is subsidized in such a comical way that demands a government investigation. Money-challenged CC, CBS and Entercom, among others, have hauled millions and millions of dollars into a napalm-fueled fire.

In 1964 during the Johnson v. Goldwater campaign, Frankie Crocker was doing his show on WZUM. I have no idea what prompted this comment, but Frankie said he'd like to see Sen.Goldwater meet up with a gasoline tanker and a match. Obviously I can't verify this and Frankie is gone, but it would appear that if he said that, it did not hamper his rise to WWRL. Maybe nobody except me listened to WZUM back then.

Here's The latest on AM 1360 Mc Keesport...Tony Renda bought WIXZ in the 70's and went to country music..after a short stint of Beautiful Music to blow out the staff..He owns the station and runs it as it is so no competition can come in and sink WJAS am 1320 which he also owns. 1360 signal daytime is as good as KDKA's..It looses to night signal going3 towers northeast and one south with 1000 watts..This is all going to change however with 1360 moving to 910 am and daytime only and 910 moving to 1360. New tower sites for both stations and the big looser is mckeesport because it will loose the station of license of 1360 going to 910 and licensed to Mt.Lebanon..

1360...hmmmmmm...how about...JUST 60'S? ......still alot of boomers and on the edge boomers who would eat it up. lots of music, lots of angles for presentation. certainly a lot of old jocks to make a few , and i mean few, bucks to suplement their ss.......think of the stories behind the music...maybe more than any other decade!!!!!! the beatles alone could support the playlist.......i have a twenty year old who eats up the 60 stuff..(puts the same beatle poster in his college apt. livingroom THAT I HAD IN COLLEGE!!!!)

you could hire jocks to do one or two shifts a week....tony would like that.....

imagine 60's trivia nights? any decade with more trivia and fun nostalgia?...PAISLEY BILLBOARDS!!!! "IF YOU LOVE THE 60'S, YOU'LL LOVE 13-60!"

NOW, WHAT TO DO ABOUT THAT SIGNAL......HMMMMMMM

ok, it's just a thought and it sure beats anything i've heard so far...

I sure would. it would save me the energy of moving the dial from 770 to 620 at 7PM. Actually I love it, but would Renda do it? If they could get TL back. Cox has WPOI,an 80's station, with 2 jocks doing 9 hour shifts. I think they each do 4 live and VT the rest. I'd listen even in the Maxon garage, you betcha!

If they did a music for lovers with old school doo wop Sunday nights, and they streamed , I'd listen just like going to the White Elephant with Vinnie and-----------------------------------------Gotta get me a black denim jacket with a rabbit's foot and a tight black skirt-------------------------------and a 57 Ford or Impala. I'm gonna swoon. Vinnie looked like Frankie Valli.

and cigarettes. Vinnie smoked Marlboros and I smoked Newport Menthals. Get some Iron City bottles to litter the back seat and floor. Get the presets on 860, 1020, 1080, 1360, and 1410. Ike was a great President

Does Tony Sr. look like the guy who played Phil in the Sopranos or the guy who played Vito Spattafore? I picture Tony Jr. as Little Carmine. .I looked like Chris's girlfriend who "turned" and got snuffed in the woods by the guy from the "E Steet" Band

May I ask what it is that makes you think "Money Talk" is not succeeding?

I will admit it isn't showing up in the ratings. Neither is WBGG, with its many flagship radio contracts with sports teams, or many of the AMs with alternative programming we enjoy discussing on here.

Yet these stations presumably do get some revenue because of their niche audiences.

Not that I don't think we should have doo-wop played on the radio (I do). But what is it about 1360 that makes you think this is not generating revenue?

It's on AM, not 50,000 watts and not affiliated with ESPN.

Look at the ratings all over the country, outside of the top5 markets there are maybe 1 or 2 viable AMs per market.... and very often they are the heritage AM with the big signal and the best sports station in town.

970 has the local team content but it's duplicated on FM, Rome has never moved the needle here, there's never been a strong morning show, and Bendel not only isn't the best show in his time slot, he isn't the best show IN HIS OWN BUILDING in his time slot.

Depends on your definition of success. From a Renda pont of view, they got their money from Ron Morris, who cares about anything else. The responsibility for generating revenue and listeners really isn't their concern now, it's Ron Morris's. Tony Sr. got his cash. So if that is the definition of success, then 1360 qualifies. If the idea that a station needs more that brokered programming to succeed, then they are an abject failure, given the only thing not off of the dish would be 4 hours on Sunday, the rest of the programming is just filler until the next Morris check clears.

"has this area ever had a polka radio station? No- I'm not saying WDVE should change their format, or that I would want to listen, but it sounds like something that would have a cult following and, at least in years gone by, I'm sure would have been a good seller"

Myron Jones once told me that when he bought WEEP, the two formats he considered were Polka and Country

I was listening to Casey Casem the 1970's last night and they welcomed WIXZ as one of their new stations, I just went to the radio station website and it was CHART DATE: OCTOBER 2, 1971. I only remember it being on WPEZ.

Top 5 Songs -
#5 “AIN’T NO SUNSHINE” – Bill Withers

#4 “SUPERSTAR” – The Carpenters

#3 “THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN” – Joan Baez

#2 “GO AWAY LITTLE GIRL” – Donny Osmond

#1 “MAGGIE MAY” – Rod Stewart

WJAS is probably the only station in Da Burg that would touch those songs and maybe WDUV in Tampa. Time sure moves on.

Actually, on September 26, Michael J. Daniels did a 1971 countdown on 620 KHB.

He played all five of those songs, and then some.

I live in Central New England near Worcester, MA (a McKees Rocks resident a life time ago) and “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart is in regular rotation at every classic hits station around NE.

I've heard Withers song many times on WSHH, 3WS, BOB, and Q.
Stewart song on 3WS and BOB.

Straying slightly off topic, it is interesting which songs make the cut as "classics" and will become a staple on playlists, while other songs that may have even charted higher at the same time, may never be heard from again.
