1370 Talk Radio now on FM

Yes, Austin has yet another talk FM station. On Friday, KJCE decided to take a page out of 590 KLBJ-AM's playbook and use an FM translator, 105-3. This is a new translator, and radio-locator hasn't updated its Austin page to include it, so I'm not sure of the call signs it will be using, or its coverage area.

Austin's FM airwaves are now cluttered with talk, as you can now find the format on 98.9 (The Big Talker), 99.7 (KLBJ-AM's translator) and 105.3FM (KJCE's translator). Feel free to add 104-9 The Horn to that list, which is just a different form of talk radio.

So for all you southsiders out there, no more pulling in Magic 105.3 out of San Antonio.

The call letters are K287AY

That's the translator that was re-broadcasting KELG 1440 AM. This was one of the first translators that rebroadcast an AM back in October of 2009 when the FCC was allowing them on STA's.

Thanks for the call letters. I looked it up on radio-locator, and according to that website, the translator belonged to 95.5, but that's way off.

I don't remember a 105-3 translator back in October...it must not have been on for too long.

I pulled in Magic 105.3 on Thursday from William Cannon, so I'm sure this simulcast started this past Friday (Apr 23).

I wish KVET-AM 1300 would acquire an FM translator, so I can hear the Astros on FM. If they want to compete with ESPN Austin (104-9 The Horn), they may have to at some point.

That ESPN "translator" (that in quote because I think they do have separate programming at times) is no blowtorch. Once you get past Koenig Lane/Northland Drive it begins to break up. Once you hit my house near Steck Avenue it's a real mess, especially if we're getting outside stations due to atmospherics.

But as far as KJCE is concerned, Magic 105.3 is a LOT more valuable.

Not true. K287AY has never applied for a license until 4/23/2010.

104.9 is not a translator, it is KTXX-FM, a Class "A" licensed to Bee Cave.

Michael Smerconish is the only decent personality on there... everyone else are nut jobs like Savage, etc... won't last...

Sorry, I guess my sarcasm should have been marked. But if you're north of the river it sure SOUNDS like one, though!

KTXX's signal is a joke. What's even more laughable is their so-called upgrade, from 2,350 watts to 3,150 watts. A few weeks ago I was driving back from Dallas and I was in Round Rock around 12:30am, and I was actually pulling in Houston's KAMA (Tu Musica) instead of a KTXX, which is only 13 miles away. At first I thought 104-9 flipped back to Digital. So you are right, it may as well be a translator.

And THIS is what has the Cowboys this fall? ::)

Is there ANY hope for an upgrade to a signal that would at least make it to US 183?

It must have been signal skip because KAMA would have had to hop over KBUK 104.9 in La Grange to make it to Central Texas. Even the big Class C FMs can't avoid problems like that when the weather is right.

I can understand skip.....I can't understand the bad audio they had this morning around sevenish, right during morning drive. The audio kept cutting in and out.

It's really too bad. Those guys are indeed doing some good programming, but they're not getting the technical support they need to make a dent in the market.

Yeah Fred it was tropoducting at its finest...in Jarrell, Salado, and Georgetown I was pulling in KBUK on 104-9, but then when I got into Round Rock, I checked back and sure enough it was KAMA instead of KBUK. Very strange. I was excited because I though BMP brought Digital back to Austin.

In addition, I was catching KMJQ 102.1 in Waco (instead of KDGE out of Dallas, which is much closer) and 106-9 The Point in between Georgetown and Round Rock instead of KHLE out of Kempner (Ft Hood).

Also, what exactly is a signal skip?

I picked up XEEA-AM 1130 out of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua a few times this past week, trying to pull in KWKH out of Shreveport so I could listen to LSU Baseball. I didn't see XEEA on the list of your Mexico Radio Stations webpage.

The upgrade is supposed to be from 2,350 to 3,150 watts, if it hasn't happened already.

As far as the Cowboys go, I am sure that in addition to 104-9 The Horn, the 'Boys will be on one, if not both of their AM stations (ESPN Austin 1530 or ESPN Deportes 1260, but with an english language broadcast). ESPN Austin will milk the opportunity of being an affiliate of the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network for all it's worth, believe me.

The worst case scenario would be that you couldn't pick up the Cowboys on an Austin affiliate and would have to tune into WOAI 1200AM, which has an outstanding signal in Austin, day or night.

Just don't tune in on November 25th, because that will be a guaranteed loss for the 'Boys. :D

WHO DAT!

When I heard today that the Cowboys were going to be on that dimbulb, I just about lost my lunch. And it was only 7:00 a.m.!

Well, that's impressive. I'll have to watch for birds falling out of the sky due to the increase in electromagnetic radiation. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

WHO DAT!

Just like last December 19th, eh? We know who dat is....and we didn't care then and don't care now! ;D

But enough of this jocularity!

ESPN managed to latch on to three stations, not ONE of which is capable of putting a decent signal into central Austin, day and night. It's a bloody disgrace. Who at the Cowboys broadcast organization decided to sign onto that swampland disguised as three radio stations? Yea, I know the details of how this mess came to be.

First, we had the Cowboys being bumped by each and every UT sport, including women's field hockey and slowpitch softball. Now, we'll get better sound quality with two tin cans and a string stretched from DFW to Austin. As much as I love them, I have to admit, the Cowboys don't give a crap about being heard in Austin...just so long as their "station" keeps cutting the checks.

And ESPN-Austin ( such as it is ) continues running ads touting how good the FM sounds. Too bad you can't hear but every other word.

Maybe I'm simplifying things, but I believe under the right weather conditions the ionosphere turns into a big radio reflector that allows the line of sight FM signal to bounce off like a stone skipping on water and land somewhere beyond the horizon.

I count on listeners like you for updates since the Mexican equivalent of the FCC doesn't update their website quite as often. XEEA is licensed for 1kw day and 250 watts night non-directional.

1370 was already on FM it was on KKMJ HD-3. Guess that didn't matter much. 105.3 might have a better signal than the HD signal did and more listeners. It doesn't effect me much I can still pick up Majic 105.3 good.

My Ramsey FM10 has more listeners than any Austin HD3, with the possible exception of KUT.

Well, best of luck to them, anyway.

Yeah, their coverage is very disappointing. But, as a Cowboys fan, I think you are set, because you can listen to the Cowboys on 1200AM WOAI out of San Antonio. Also, how many games do you listen to on the radio? The only times I listened to the Saints on the radio is because they weren't on TV, but in Austin you never have to worry about the 'Boys not being on television. Do you like to turn down the sound of your TV so you can hear the Cowboys Radio Network broadcast, or do you just like to know the radio broadcast is there as a backup?

Actually, it's none of those. I spend a lot of Sunday afternoon in my car. When the Cowboys had a late game in the fall, KVET would fade out entirely unless you were within five miles of its sticks. DAMN Jerry Jones...why won't he get a REAL affiliate here in Austin?
