14 million for 2500 watts!

Inside Radio reporting that WLIE/Islip is sold to a Wisconsin-based non-commercial operator Starboard Media. They are paying $12.9 million for the station plus another $1.1 million for some real estate (building on Deer Park Avenue and the xmitter site?).

The article says that Business TalkRadio Network is circling the lawyers (oh, no not our NY City affilate)! Wonder if they will take the station non-comm?

That Delco radio in your Cadillac must not be tweaked right. WLIE is 2500 watts, with a CP for 4300 watts day.

Press Release from April 21, 2003

STARBOARD MEDIA FOUNDATION INAUGURATES
ITS NEW “RELEVANT RADIO” NETWORK TODAY

Green Bay, Apr 21 (CRU)— Starboard Media Foundation will launch its new Starboard Radio Network this morning, Monday, April 21st, at 7 a.m. At that hour, “Morning Air” with Jeff Cavens will begin the first broadcast day for the newest Catholic radio network in the United States. Using the slogan “Relevant Radio,” the Starboard network is beginning with a dozen stations, nine of which are owned by Starboard and three of which are leased. These include KSMM 1530 AM and WMIN 730 AM Minneapolis-St Paul; WKBH 1470 La Crosse, Wisconsin; WMMA 93.9 FM Wisconsin Rapids; WYNW 92.9 FM Wausau, Wisconsin; WDVM 1050 AM Eau Claire, Wisconsin; WJOK 1050 AM Green Bay; WHFA 1240 AM Madison; and WZRK 1550 AM Lake Geneva-Kenosha-Racine, Wisconsin. The three leased stations are WZUM 1590 AM Pittsburgh, and WCSN 820 AM and WJJG 1530 AM Chicago (see related story). WZUM and WJJG are leased fulltime. On May 1st these dozen will be joined by WGLB 100.1 FM in Milwaukee and WDBC 680 AM in Escanaba, Michigan. In early summer, WJOB 1230 AM Hammond and WWCA 1270 AM Gary, both in Indiana, will join the network.

The Relevant Radio morning drive host, Mr. Cavens, was associated for years with EWTN’s youth program “Life on the Rock.” The two-hour show will be expanded to three hours this summer. The next Starboard offering will be “The Doctor Is In,” heard from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. After a two-hour break, the network resumes at 3 p.m., with Ave Maria Radio’s two-hour “Al Kresta Live,” followed by “Catholic Answers Live” from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Central time.

Sherry Kennedy-Brownrigg, president of Starboard Media Foundation and Relevant Radio, is delighted about launching the new network this morning. "So many of our Catholic brothers and sisters are not hearing the full message of our Church. Starboard seeks to broadcast where ever the Lord calls us. Chicago and Pittsburgh are the #3 and #22 markets in the country, and together they represent nearly 12 million souls. We are thrilled that we have the potential to present the relevance of the Catholic faith to so many people." According to Ms. Kennedy-Brownrigg, the Relevant Radio network will reach 20 million people.

Great another worthless station blasting into Connecticut. At least with their current BTR format there's some shows worth listening to, some not carried by the local Hartford-area BTR affiliate TalkRadio 990 AM.

Amazing the station has come full circle back to religion. I know the calls refer to the Long Island Expressway, but I don't think they'd keep the WLIE call letters. It's just not a good idea for a religious station to have LIE in their name. They can go back to WLUX those calls are available, but they can't use WLIX. Those calls aren't available. WLIX belong to an LPFM in Ridge, NY.

Time for the Big LIE to die, I guess.

I think if they are going for call letters that were on that stick, they might apply for WBIC except those calls are currently in Georgia on a daytimer.

They don't seem to change call letters on their other stations, so who knows...but I bet they will probably sign an LMA to get their programming on before the sale goes through.

Why waste all that money for yet another useless God-caster? It will take many years to reclaim $14 million.<P ID="signature">______________

OK because they come into NJ like gangbusters
I remember when 540 was only 250 watts with a wilkinson transmitter
over at the old Islip speedway. its amaizing how some stations Get Huge Power increases and Others cannot get squat,

Oh young one...

1. If one has made a 14mm investment, they have done their homework to make sure there is a return on their investment. If you consider it a waste, its because your business sense has not developed.

2. You consider this useless God-caster. (Thank you for using a capital G)Perhaps if you listeded, you may gain something from the format. Same as we gain *something* from a news station, a rock station and an oldies station.

3. Of course it will take years to *reclaim* 14mm. How long did/will it take your parents to pay off the mortgage on their home?

This is a business. Apparently, they feel it is worth 14mm to deliver the desired programming.

You have made some outstanding points in your post. My question is this: given that WLIE has a tight directional pattern, doesn't it only stand to reason that the null to Philadelphia will be pulled in tighter if they increase power ? Wouldn't that reduce their effective coverage in Nassau County ? They would probably be better off either where they are or going back to 250 watts non-directional.

By that logic, every single business decision ever made has been a sound one, just because millions of dollars changed hands. (Financial) might doesn't always mean right. How's Univision doing with WZAA? ;)

That can't already be "gained" by Family Radio, WWDJ, or the other "God-casters" already on the air? With "personalities" like Harold Camping predicting the apocalypse? Yes, listeners sure do gain a lot from that sort of programming.

Perhaps. Doesn't mean they will necessarily succeed, or that even if they do (by selling airtime), that it will really provide a service to most listeners.

Couldn't they still use the WLIX calls anyway? after all the station on 94.7 in Ridge is WLIX-LP. 540 could be WLIX or WLIX-AM. Or would they need permission from WLIX-LP?

It's just not

But isn't that (the calls) the truth?

Yes they would and why would they want to? Stations CAN take different call letters and - unlike Salem who likes to buy up old Top 40 outlets (WMCA, WWDJ, WFIL among others) - this group doesn't seem to change their calls to try to fit some cutesie pattern.

Oh, I checked WGOD is taken (AM-FM combo on the Virgin Islands). WJHC is available, but they would have to explain what "H" stands for. WWJD is not. WCAH is available. WHLY "Holy 540!" is available, but I think Barnstable might have a problem with those.

Like secular formats, there are different types of Christian programming. Teaching, music, hard hitting, soft hitting. Advertiser supported, listener supported. Yes, listeners gain. There are far fewer christian broadcasters selling out than other formats...

Sometimes success isn't always measured by dollars...

Good question, that shouldn't happen. Its not that tight... Each increase for WLIE has been good, and any limitations due to protection of other stations has been minimal.

if It went religious. they could take the Old 89.7fm calls
WRLJ We Really Love Jesus
