1400 to 560

1400 The Team is moving to 560 WVOC starting on January 3rd according to Teddy Heffner's twitter page.

This leaves WVOC solely on 100.1 now. 1400 will now be Hallelujah 1400.

Thoughts?

They simulcast for a few weeks and think all those WVOC listeners will just show up on the FM dial? Blowing up history to be the #2 sports station in Columbia! And launching after football season? Wow.

It is kind of a shocking move. Maybe they are trying to get the Gamecock or Clemson rights for next year or the year after.

It is supremely weird to see them at 560. 560 has been news/talk for decades, and WIS, one of the most venerable stations in the South, and now WCOS-AM will get a huge bump up.

They are trying to challenge 107.5. This is the way to do it. 93.1 Remember, they are also doing this for Carolina baseball. College baseball is huge in the Columbia area. It is as big as college basketball in many places. 107.5 has that market cornered, with all the play-by-play and analysts.

They do have a pretty good lineup. Heffner mornings, local middays, a 1-3pm local show, Corey Miller, and then SportsTalk will stay at 560.

Here is their coverage area, even though on many radios it may be more:

I think most of VOC's listeners are still tuning into 560. Such a great frequency. Why would they want to change? I know it will help their sports coverage, but I really question that move. I sure WSB still leverages 750 as their strong point and WBT the same with 1110.

Actually, this move has been done before in other markets. Transition the AM talk base over to the FM, then flip the AM to sports. This is gonna be a pretty fast transition, though. Are they aggressively promoting WVOC on 100.1?

The real problem with AM 560 is their audio quality. On many radios it sounds like they are broadcasting through a speakerphone. On my car radio it is downright unlistenable.

This.

In all my travels VOC is one of the worst sounding talk stations I've heard.

I agree. Theres no doubt they want Gamecock sports back, to carry on both the new FM (100.1) and a bigger AM (560) than Cumulus has with 1320. (Womens bball)
With all the positions that Cumulus has already cut - will they pony up for Gamecock rights?

I think I read that 1400 would go gospel.

I hate to hear they are fliping channels. Folks will miss their news coverage and they can write off everybody from Sumter East due to Lake City and Monks Corner broadcasting on 100.1

But all WVOC cares about is those two counties and maybe Calhoun. People will miss their signal in Florence and Orangeburg and Sumter, but Rush is already on stations in all of those.

Clear Channel's talk station used to be on 730 AM, and had range from Jacksonville to Cape Hatteras. They still couldn't beat WTMA until several years into their run. They went to 94.3 in '04. 94.3 has gotten double the rating of WTMA since then, and the gap probably will increase with Rocky D being let go.

Last full book before Cumulus embargoed the summer book, 94.3 5.5, WTMA 2.

That's what they're trying to do with 100.1. 560 as a sports station is a smart move. It has the biggest signal in SC on AM in the daytime, bigger than 107.5. It comes in well as far S as I-95 even on a normal radio, and on a good radio can easily be heard around Charleston.

560 can be heard as far as Charlotte daytime. 107.5 quickly peters out N on I-26 because of 107.3 Jamz, while 560 is one of the best AMs in places like Newberry and in Fairfield and Kershaw Counties.

I would also not put it past CC to get a translator for 560 so it can be on FM, sorta. The move is smart, IMO, but it seems like it's happening pretty fast, since they just added the FM a little over a month ago. I'd wait around 6 months or so to make sure WVOC had a solid identity at 100.1 before changing things.

It's often forgotten that all stations actually care about usually is the market they serve, and sell to - extra coverage is just kind of a bonus.

But MOST sporting events are at night. Especially baseball, which will end up on 560 (I assume)

Gordon is dead on I was on I-20 Saturday night coming back from Augusta. Around Batesburg I tuned into 560...

...nothing but squeaks and squelches.

I tuned into 107.5 and heard the SEC Championship Game loud and clear.

For those saying that CC is doing this to get back into the Gamecock contract talk...they still haven't addressed the issue of an FM signal which is what is needed now to do sports the right way.

New Coke, Edsel ...

If CC does put an FM translator on 560 this would help around the fringe Columbia area at night but not much past that. I am not saying that putting an FM translator on 560 is a bad idea, I think it's a good idea if they can't simulcast an FM in the area but a translator is never going to reach the 50 mile plus area it needs to reach.

I am truly perplexed at this move. I agree with the simulcast and getting WVOC's content on FM. But WVOC-AM has been around forever. Fully replacing it with sports, especially this soon, makes no sense to me. But of course I recognize they didn't ask me.
