1520

Quite a few of us from Texas took notice. This is the byproduct of a new partnership between Salem Commuications and Biz Radio Network, L.L.C. of Houston. Come on over and check out the Houston/Galveston or Dallas/Fort Worth boards to get an idea of what Orlando is about to be a part of. Some of us are quite surprised that Salem is partnering up with this firm given their recent legal issues.

Allow me to correct your information. The Houston situation is totally different that the other Salem business stations already in existence since last year. It is not a partnership. KKOL in Seattle went business last year. KDOW in San Fransisco is now a business station as well.

The business radio format has failed in every market in which it has been tried, with the possible exception of New York and Bloomberg's WBBR.

In many markets it has failed time and time again. In Orlando it flopped on 1270 WBZS (formerly WORL). It flopped again on the next station with the WORL call letters, 660. In Tampa it has been tried and failed five times, including two different stints on two of the same frequencies. That old story about "our listeners are businessmen and they're too busy to take part in the ratings" is just that, a story.

The "format" is usually just a cover for brokering and financial shenanigans. Judging by the ratings, the public wants no part of it and it needs to be put down.

Wait a minute...wait a minute.

There is sound reasoning applied in this change. They hired the best consultants, PHD's, research specialists, financial experts and even sought advice from a "higher power". After months, weeks, days and hours of meetings, discussions and arguments in smoke filled rooms they all agreed expert radio programing dictated having another signal filled with spots all sounding the same and repeating the phone number three, four and five times. Come on now, give them a break! We all need to know about how one pill can cure everything...how one cream can make your 87 year old wife look like she's 16...how your invention can make billions at Walmart! And just in case you forget, stay tuned, the phone number will be repeated over and over and over and over and over. This is PROFESSIONAL radio!!!!!!!

From a ratings point of view, any format at 1520 will die. From a sales point of view, good luck. Management will have a tough time finding salespeople capable of earning a living peddling spots. I'd recommend hiring magicians.

The problem with 1520 is the signal. It has a 5kw directional day pattern and 350 watt directional night pattern that covers essentially Apopka (City of License) and the immediate surrounding area. It does not, however, have a marketable signal over Metro Orlando, and for this reason, the station will remain in the ratings slumper. That doesn't mean 1520 cannot make money. It just means any sales initiatives will have to be based on factors not involving ratings which means, for the most part, agency buys are out. However, local retail sales in the immediate area should do fine if marketed correctly. If 1520 can somehow improve its signal, then it may stand a chance of becoming a moderate money maker in the Metro. As it is now, it may produce some income from the North Orlando area from block programmimg sales with limited local retail spot sales much the same as WHNZ-AM 1250 Tampa does with its "Impact Radio" marketing strategy.

Agreed. For years this dial position has been known a religious station. Good luck getting anyone to stop on it long enough to listen to the difference now, since, after all it's still just conversation. (Business/financial radio in 2010, seriously? Didn't we learn to let that go with 1270 years, and 660 even more recently?) Salem has essentially resurrected the format that wasn't working back when they took over 660, correct? (Moneywatch)

Off the air already? Crap, they didn't pull a fast one and swap with Genesis now did they? :)

this evening @ 6:15 1520 was off the air????????

It was on at 10 PM 3/23 when I passed thru - not for long as the signal is weak at night, but it was on.

I listened to 1520 The Biz briefly online last night, and it didn't sound bad. If they market that station correctly and become real aggressive in the market, they should do fine.

For years WRYO was known as a religious station, but that had absolutely no negative effect whatsoever on the success that 98.5 WKTK Gainesville-Ocala has experienced since it's WRYO Heavenly Sounds Radio days.

There is quite a difference in 98.5 FM and 1520 on the AM dial though.
