1530 Low Modulation

Anyone else notice this? Compared to 55KRC and WLW which are twice as loud, I have to crank the volume on my radio all the way up to hear Ken Broo.

Yep...lots of signal over here in Indiana but the modulation is almost a no-show.

Are any AM stations presently running IBOC in Cincinnati? Here in Columbus, CC has turned off IBOC
on both 610 and 1230. Nine months ago, we had three AM stations in Columbus running IBOC.
There was also 820 AM. This may be a permanent move by CC Columbus. I personally don't care
for IBOC on the AM band.

What about the Cleveland AM stations? Are any of them still running IBOC?

ESPN 1530.....50,000 watts and sounding like a couple. As if this station isn't unlistenable enough with the annoying Mo Egger on seemingly all the time, and the ultra hyper Lance McAlister filling in the cracks, the audio seems to have deteriorated considerably. While the low modulation seemed fixed by this afternoon, there seems to be almost no audio processing. It sounds flat and lifeless. Has sounded like this for quite some time, IMHO. I would love to see a real sports station with some good local hosts in this market. Will never happen I realize.

More Ken Broo please. And while I'm at it, Mo Egger doing sports reports on WLW in the morning is unbearable.

It sounds louder but with phone line audio quality. I also second your thoghts keys2, on another locally hosted sports station. There is an opportunity for a station in the market to hurt them right now given how poorly 1530 and 1360 are doing.

With LW there, i highly doubt it. It would be hard to change the listening habits of people listening to three different stations.

Haven't heard Mo Egger in the morning, lately. I've been hearing Seg Dennison

I had a thread on here a few weeks ago (Sports Radio in Cincinnati) that ended up going off-topic and turned into a discussion about translators, nighttime signals, and such.

And jry aren't you trying to change listener habits in part by having 1160 do a Bengals postgame call-in show immediately after each game (along with the weekday sports show Wildman does)?

Starting night Brother Stair (sp?) has promised to start a pray-a-thon for the 1530 modulation problem. Donate cash or with your major credit card. Can I get an "AMEN"???

Right. Its pick and shovel work. You must commit to thousands of dollars in billboards. Having a name talent with a loyal following makes it a bit easier but, holy cow!

All three have been off since early July. Love it. I was skeptical at first, but I think Clear Channel has finally wised up in these two markets.
I do think WTAM still has it on. I can hear the hash on 1110 here east of Columbus even though the signal on 1100 itself never has been great down here (5/10 if that daytime).

Clear Channel turned off IBOC on 1230 AM in Columbus on May 5th and it hasn't been back on since. This leads me to believe it's at least permanent for 1230 AM in Columbus. If IBOC was down for technical reasons on 1230 AM, it would have been back on the air months ago.

I'm not able to pick up a strong enough signal from 1360 WSAI but last time a was in range they were still running IBOC. 55KRC never did run IBOC.

I heard at one time that 55KRC's antenna system wasn't broadband enough to pass all the IBOC hiss...I'm developing a newfound appreciation for narrow band antenna systems.

Mr. Yinger do you believe those thousands of dollars in billboards have been worth it?  I know Arbitron no longer releases numbers for non-subscribers, but I have access to them.  WQRT's cume was well under 30,000 and most of that was in mornings.  The Deters billboards might have worked, but the new guy has likely lost all of that audience.  Two different shows, and Dean is just not very good, I'm sorry to say.  His interview yesterday with Kevin Pollak was uncomfortable to listen to.  You could tell Pollak just wanted to get out of there.  A morning show interview with a nationally known comedian should be enjoyable and funny.  This was neither.  It's a good thing TC is there to give the show some personality. I try to give a guy a chance, but this doesn't seem to be a wise choice.

I'd be careful about quoting Arbitron numbers, here or anywhere. You're probably wrong on that, anyways.
Dean isn't for everyone but, neither is Rush, Sean, Jerry Springer or whoever.

BTW, Dean did pretty well with Kevin, given that he was really ill and had to visit the rest room durning the breaks.

#1. I didn't quote any Arbitron numbers. I gave you a vague range from which to deduce.
#2. I am not "probably wrong, anyways." Last year WQRT had a 0.4 share when Arbitron still allowed non-subscriber numbers to be published. You also had Deters, Ramsey, and Furman then. I saw some of the afternoon combined numbers with Ramsey and Furman and they were respectable. But even then, your weekly cume was in the 30s. I don't think it's really out of the question to think those numbers haven't budged, especially given the popularity of Ramsey, who is now at WKRC.
#3. We can disagree on what is a good radio interview. All I know is that when the interviewer really has nothing to add other than to talk abbout his 12:30 AM TV show, and the interviewee just starts giving out information for his club appearance because there's uncomfortable silence, I would call that a bad interview. Pollak also joked about the lack of phone calls. Dean said the phone was broke. (Not "broken." He said "broke.") On a side note, a friend who works third shift used to listen to Deters on his way home in the morning. He went to 1160 out of force of habit, and heard the interview. He said it was the worst thing he'd ever heard and he had no idea who this Dean guy was.
