1550 WZUM

The automation is finally up! The transmitter is on! The new 1550 WZUM is an oldies R&B format. Most of the hits are from the late 60s through the late 70s. We have a lot of fine tuning to do over the next few weeks. Constructive comments are welcome.

Hey PHILZ, about using the old WZUM jingles: Yes!

We do plan to add local voices and some speciality programs to the lineup in the near future.

You can't have an oldies format without jingles!

I have to thanks Clark for the jingles, the music, and for the format idea. We have a temporary audio stream at http://stream.1550wzum.com:8000/wzum if you live in a poor signal area. The stream has a few issues that we will begin to work on tomorrow. We needed to get the station back on the air and now that it is on, we can begin correcting a number of small problems.

Thanks for the kind words. It has been a lot of work but judging from just the e-mails I received, I think we have our 10 listeners. ;)

Ed

Had the stream on and the format sounds great. While out and about in Steubenville today I could get the over the air signal.

You get the DX award! If anyone has a used 5KW solid state BE in great condition for sale, we might be able to improve coverage in Steubenville.

Sounds like the old PSAs are being brought out, too ... Did I really hear one that was tagged "Edward G. Rendell, governor"? Still, it is a refreshing change of pace. There were many times when old WAMO-860 was a good choice for background music.

Somehow, Jim, I don't think WDIG can be obtained as cheaply as WLFP was sold. From today's McKeesport Daily News ... surprisingly, put on line ...

I've heard the group that owns DIG is indeed asking a hefty price. Large 4 tower transmitter site north of Weirton. I'm sure oil and gas rights have something to do with it.

Unfortunately the 35,000 Watts of WIGN Bristol Tennessee came blaring in at 7:30 PM. The WZUM logo can be Repainted on the side of national record Mart in market Square.

My Jackie, Who Does Not Listen to AM Radio At All, "to Much Static". Asked what I Was Listening to Yesterday. I Told Her WZUM 1550. This Morning Going out to Breakfast in her Car, In Starting the Car 1550 WZUM Was on Her Car Radio. She Loves the Music. Could she Be Listener 11?

The New Sound of ZUM sounds great! I’ve been spreading the word around on Facebook Twitter and by other on line social sites, and or avenues to including word of mouth. All comments have been very positive and liking the sound. To beat the AM static and listen to the station with FM quality, also when it powers down, I’ve been listening to the stations web stream via my iPhone hooked to my home radio docking station and or car radio input. While listening, the stations audio processing sounds FM quality, very crisp, not compressed or mashed.

Did a look up on “Tunein Radio” which stations can be heard on line or via smart phones. WZUM shows up on tune in radio directory but does not show a stream available. If you want to grab some additional audience and that will promote the station economically with FM quality sound, listing the stream on tunein is great way to go. Just about all Pittsburgh radio stations have their streams listed and available on Tunein radio. Have been sending the web stream link to people that I have been sharing the station with, they have been listening to the station the same way with a smart phone or hooking to the input jack on their car radio, some have been using a ultra low power 88-108 mhz FM Stereo iphone/ smart phone car connect to to their smart phones to listen ZUM as well . Everyone I talked with really enjoys the station and are telling others about the station as well.

I logged about 60 hours of listening to WZUM and I'm very impressed with the music mix keep it up guys.

I'm impressed! Thanks for listening. We rushed to get the station on by July the 4th and knew everything wasn't perfect. We have been working on removing weeds at the base of the tower that caused a few problems. We found a problem in the audio chain and corrected it making the air sound a lot clearer. Finally the stereo MP3 audio stream is working a lot better too. The website, 1550wzum.com, sucks but we are getting there.

I know at least 4 People ,I told About WZUM 1550 That are Listening alot. Like Myself. At Work the Walls are Lead Lined No Reception at all For Any Signals even Cell Phones. On 4 July you listed a Web Stream we tuned it in and set it to "favorites". Their was some Buffering and Dropping. This Weekend It Sounded Great. I Have 2 Other Coworkers Leaving it on. I'm Off Today got up @ 7am Turned the ["AlreadyTuned to 1550"] Radio and It will be on all day. The Gang Tuner Will Rust on 1550, Like my 90 year old Fathers is on 1020. Keep Up The Great Work. If I Hear Color Him Father by the Winstons , Don't Stop Now By Eddie Holman or A Toast to you By Louis Curry Along With the PepperTanner Jingles. I'll Be Back in 1969. GOOD LUCK.

Are there any more translators out there? This could work on a limited basis along the lines of what WAMO is doing (or will there be a joint sales agreement with WAMO down the road?)
