1560 & 790 Might Have a Chance

But you guys don't think that anyone else can look up info on a computer? That's what they all do. You also keep talking about sophomoric antics. Obviously they want to try more humor. Is that wrong?

I don't disagree with you Dragrage, but the sophmoric antics others mention on this thread are NOT HUMOROUS. Hey, trying new stuff is great, but when it doesn't work, move on. The afternoon drive time team's humor does not work IMHO. As for Palillo, he seems to look up facts on the computer better than anyone else. His show is more crisp and informative than anyone else. He's no "radio god", but he gets good info to the listener fast and for the most part accurate.

Ask Radio Disney. No PPM and yet they are paceing 26% ahead of last year. KCOH does not subscribe to ppm, and they are one of the billing AM's in Houston. I know of a particular cluster that has PPM out the ying yang, the have good ratings but they are behind by about 5% from projections. What now? Bash away!

You need to temper that figure with the fact that Radio Disney had practically no local revenue a year ago. Their revenue came from "donations" from the home office. Advertisers sold out of the market were assigned to Houston on national spot deals. If they are pacing only 26% ahead of last year, they should shut it down or get people in place that can sell. Or...maybe they should encode, but I doubt that 8 year olds will be carrying around people meters on their belts.

Now it becomes about tastes. I am completely cool with a difference in senses of humor. Sense of humors? Sense ofs humor?

Palillo has yet to beat Matt and Rich in the same daypart.

That honestly shocks me, but 610 has its loyal following dating back to when it was the only game (no pun intended) in town. A lot of people I know who have recently moved to this area (like me) or moved back here listen to Pallilo and much of 790's other programming.

I buy Pallilo and Rich and I can tell you this, no comparison. Rich gets 8 times the repsonse for my clients than Pallilo.
Who knows about this "movement" in Houston. I live in Dallas and remember when no one thought The Ticket would succeed. The rest is history.

I'm not sure where you are getting your "facts" from, but i work there. So my "facts" are seen. I this station was so unprofitable, ABC radio would have pulled the plug at some point a while back don't you think? It's amazing how you guys can get this amazing info that people that work there can't get. WOW ???

Dragrage, I don't know your position at Radio Disney, but my info is accurate from some higher up ABC Radio people I know well in Dallas and on the West Coast. My statements are a bit dated, but you know what I say is accurate if you are in management. I don't think they ever considered pulling the plug nor will they ever consider it because Houston is an integral market in Radio Disney's national radio reach. Their local presence has never been much to brag about in Houston. From what I know they have had some shaky leadership over the years and not much help from corporate other than the national accounts I spoke of earlier in the thread.

I never said Radio Disney was unprofitable. Houston is just one small spoke in a pretty large hub. I suspect Houston's contribution is not that strong financially from what I know of their suspected billing. Between $700K and $900K per year in the 5th market is pretty weak. I never said unprofitable, but a station with such a unique demo should bill stronger with or without PPM data. That station should produce at least $2 Mil per year.

I have worked with Radio Disney for going on 8 years now. I do know alot about what's going on there. You are correct about leadership. The leadership changed about 2 years ago, since then they are getting there act together. Chris Martin did a great job there and has moved on to Florida. Now Dale Busic is the GM there and is building on the last 2 yrs. They will be where you think they should be within the next 2 yrs. ABC radio does not intend on encoding at at. That's my point.

Well Dragrage, I wasn't aware you worked at both KGOW and KMIC. I was referencing the fact that KMIC, who I knew you employed with, has filed with the FCC to deny KGOW's nighttime array as it would "cause interference" with KMIC. Now, with you being an engineer for both stations, all I can say is wow. Talk about a conflict of interest. I stand corrected, and my attempt as sophomoric humor has fallen flat. BTW, what in the world is a purple nurple? :D

I have worked for two and as many as three different stations at a time.
Hence:

1975
KTLW
KIKK
KNUZ

All three were country

1980
KNUZ
KFRD-FM

1982
KFRD-FM
KRBE

1987
KILT
KFRD-FM both country

1996
KILT
KHYS

1997
KILT
KKTL (KRTK)

2001
KKHT
KILT

2002
KHJZ
KKHT

2004
KHJZ
KNTH

2006
KHJZ
KNTH
KFNC

2007
KHJZ
KNTH

I did it because of the money and the thrill of pulling it off.

Yep, i work at several. Not really a conflict of interest, I do what ever needs to be done wherever i am. Just do the best job i can. And a purple nurple is just something funny nothing bad. ;D

So I was driving around Houston on Saturday and figure, "awww, what the heck, let's check out 1560"

To my surprise... the banter was pretty good! I was listening to the show that runs between 10a-11a and they were talking about the Aggies. But the thing was... there was chemistry and an actual flow to the show, unlike what I hear during the week on the station. What's keeping The Game from moving some of the weekend guys who sound like they know what they are doing to weekdays? I'd rather have that than hosts with "big names" that don't sound very good day in and day out.

Am I the only one who's noticed this?

Nuño works with Richard Justice Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and reports on Astros, Texans, Rockets as well filing reports with AM and PM drive. Rodney moved over from the producer side and is getting his feet under him but thank you for the compliments to them.

And what you hear during the week is fabulous as well.

Correct! Not hearing Hoffman yesterday was nice. 8) On a serious note, it is time for you boys to encode. Man up and see where you stand.

I would rather see the other stations de-encode. If we are talking about "manning up" doesn't it seem more ballsy to ask a premium cost without supportive data? Isn't there a greater challenge in asking a client to take a chance and judge us by the listeners that buy their products and services and not by a ridiculous method of data discovery? I think the radio-info board's demand for 1560 to encode is more about satisfying a curiosity. That we would be successful is counterintuitive to you, considering what you are hearing coming out of the speakers. But a part of you thinks...Am I wrong? Is what they are doing working? Certainly not! They aren't following the manual! And inside you are confident that you are right, that we are flatlining, or barely registering. But you are still curious.

I'm not curious.

Actually, I would like to see the information so I could possibly recommend The Game to my clients. They won't look at anything that is not substantiated by a number from an independent survey (ie PPMs). Honestly, I won't either. Two reasons:

(1) I don't take chances because in media that is the same as guessing. When you guess you most likely lose money. I leave that to the amateurs.
(2) I like to assess a value to what I'm buying because most people buying anything want to know what they're getting for their money.

When you guys start running your station like pros as opposed to amateurs, which is what is seems like at times, you'll get more run from the press and more money from advertisers. And, I'll wager to say you won't lose that renegade broadcasting moniker you guys are trying to establish.
