1690 Adding late 60's???

I was just scanning the dial and I could have sworn I heard the end of "Monday, Monday" by the Mama's and Papa's on 1690. Has anyone else noticed if they are adding late 60's songs to their rotation since the demise of Oldies 104.3?

They would be smart to pick up more late 60s, and drop the Sinatra type stuff. I woul dhave to imagine that it turns off a lot of former WJMK listeners who would otherwise listen to 1690.

I couldn't agree more, dropping the standards would be the best thing to do to possibly pick up former WJMK listeners. Honestly, I would not consider Sinatra, Pat Boone, and the other standards they play to be "Oldies" acts wheras the mid to late 60s music like the Mamas & Papas, Spiral Staircase, Supremes, Hermans Hermits, Wee Five would be "Oldies" acts. All those groups I heard on 1690 in the last day or so. Still, they have a long way to go to be a true oldies station, but it's a least a small step in the right direction. Still too many standards and 50s stiffs.

Sad, but true. So far it's less than 10% of their playlist. Anything more than that I'll consider a "sellout". They probabaly had the most unique major market Oldies station in the country. Now they could become just another sound-alike, run-of-the-mill Oldies station. I guess I can understand that they want to attract former WJMK listeners. Hopefully they can do that without screwing up the other 90% of their playlist. Otherwise it's time for me to fire up the XM reciever. Like Johnny Cash once said, "I don't like it but I guess things happen that way".

They should just play some of the classic late 1950s pop and rock n' roll and sprinkle in more regular oldies. But, they should still try to stay unique and different, but still try to attempt to get WJMK listeners. Its worth a shot.
______________

I just hope they stay away from the Beatles.

It would seem smart to pick up songs that fit their sound from the 60's...

No one will turn off the Mamas and Papas on 1690....and unlike the above poster...I think some early Beatles would fit in fine...

Looking at the numbers....there are a lot more WJMK listeners out there to pick up than 1690 listeners to tick off!

Agreed. On the Beatles issue, I think it would be ok to play a few tunes from the Fab 4.
______________

There aren't a whole lot of Oldies from 1964 and beyond that I like. But if I did, I don't think that I would want to hear them in AM mono after hearing them on WJMK in FM stereo. I'd rather go to satellite radio or an iPod. Most of the pre-British Invasion stuff was recorded in mono, so it fits AM better.

I Love the Beatles! even those small town rinky dink low power nostelgia
radio stations which are located all the way out in the bonndocks
play a few Beatles tunes because they fit right in with nostelgia standards!
But, Just As long that AM-1690 doesn't get heavenly involved with that
lousey Motown crap and those Phill Spector junk, the beatles are beutifull
in my books! but when it get way too far out into that Psychedelic S$#t
I just can't handle it any more.
Let the other radion stations handle that kind of music,
that plays R&B Rhythmic Oldies, and Psychedelic music.
Radio stations such as:

WILV 100.3 FM
WLIT 93.9 FM
WWYW 103.9 FM
WVAZ 102.7 FM

Nevertheless I hope that AM-1690 does NOT phase out the 1950s,
I was really injoying the 50s while it lasted...

"LOUSY MOTOWN CRAP" ?????????????
Yeah, who likes THAT???

I think the point here is that BOTH the Beatles and Mowtown have been played to death by the average run-of-the-mill Oldies stations. WRLL is a unique station with a great pre-1964 playlist. And they program to an audience that remembers Top 40 radio in the '50s & early '60s. I've heard songs on WRLL that I haven't heard on commercial radio in over 40 years. Let them "tweak" if they must. But I hope they don't change the original concept.

If you want the old WRLL sound, listen to WMTR-AM (www.wmtram.com) out of Moprristown NJ. Their sound is not polluted with 60s music.

Just because you don't like post 1964 oldies doesn't mean that there aren't lots of people that do like that music. It's cool if you like the 50s stuff, but personal tastes can't get in the way of ratings and revenue.

I's not about "tastes". What I said was that if I DID like post-1964 oldies (most of which were recorded in stereo), I wouldn't want to listen to them in AM mono. And I'm not sure that former WJMK listeners will want to, either.

I'm guessing that you're a fan of post-1964 music. But would you REALLY want to hear Steppenwolf and Annette played back-to-back?

What I saying is that both Motown & that crappy Psychedelic music
were being played with the same old songs over & over & over & over
over again especially on the old WJMK oldies station, before Jack FM
took over the airwaves. I like stuff like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra,
Perry Como, John Denver, & Paul McCartney. and the Doowapp of the 1950s...

Bingo.

Drone on all you want about the "pollution" of 60's music... bottom line is, the station was tanking. They would be positively foolish NOT to add the music that WJMK was playing to a cume seven times larger.

I can't imagine what people think who remember the BIG sounding AMs of yesterday trying to tune around to 1690 to hear this pig.

CC is driving people to get hearing tests because the station sounds lousy with its iboc reduced bandwidth.

I feel sorry for all the people that care about 1690 and enjoy its personalities and programming.

IBOC actually sounds okay on WBBM except for the hiss. However this 1690 signal was not that strong even before IBOC.

Truer words were never spoke, Link. With IBOC, WRLL is
absolutely impossible to listen to. I know they have
freshened up the playlist but the sound is so abysmal
I can`t even listen beyond ten minutes and that`s with
a portable radio hanging on a thread facing southwest at
a 45-degree angle. At this point in time, I assume CCU
keeps AM1690 on-the-air because they can`t do anything
else with the signal.
