2 Wants To Know

I know this is a radio board, but I don't know anywhere else to put this.
I saw the debut of "2 Wants To Know" on WFMY yesterday. I think it's
somewhat disjointed, gives results of investigations and a few interviews,
and tries to intersperse the weather with "what we're working on at 6."

I once saw a "60 Minutes"-type local program in Dallas and thought it would
make a good local program airing once a week, perhaps in Saturday access time,
but I think it would do better in a large market and not in the Triad.

But off-point. If I programmed Channel 2, not only would "2 Wants To Know"
be on, but I'd steal "Katie" from Channel 8 and put her on at 3. I, personally,
am sick of Andy Griffith seemingly every time I turn on the set. (Recently I
sent g.m. Larry Audas a copy of WBTW Florence, SC's schedule up to 8 PM;
while he liked it, he reminded me that WBTW has two programs not available
to WFMY: "Katie" and "Inside Edition." I'd like to steal Katie from Channel 8
and put her on at 3; "Inside Edition" is too tabloidy for my taste, despite its
ratings.) Nevertheless, I predict that Andy will be back at the same old stand
before the summer's out.

As for the pairing of Frank Mickens and Julie Luck, I nominate them to replace Pat
and Vanna when they retire. Their 5 PM newscast was the silliest thing I've seen
since Frank Deal retired from Channel 8.

Still, some credit is due Channel 2 for trying something out of the usual groove.
After all, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" will put you out of business every time.

Channel 2 doesn't have to worry about it "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The whole thing is broke and after last night, it might be even more broken. Poor Julie. What a step down.

I understand a number of viewers complained on WFMY's "Facebook" page regarding the "The Andy Griffith Show" being removed at 5:30pm, i say give them what they want!

What happened last night?

Sweeps started, Julie Luck had her 1st day at The Deuce, and America was destroyed because Andy is no longer on at 5:30
:D
[In full disclosure, I work for Gannett Corp. based inside WFMY].......People complain to a station whenever ANY thing changes. I remember one time back in the day when I was at 45 in Winston and they pulled Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, and viewers complained and this one lady left a voice mail (pre-email/ internet for most people) saying how crushed she was and that Kwai Chang Caine/David Carradine was like her spiritual inspiration and so forth....(pretty funny and yet sad to listen to it) ......anyway in this day and age if you wanna watch Andy go watch Andy somewhere online etc..or better yet DVR Andy during the day and watch it back at 5:30p and pretend it is actually on at that time.....

As far as "Stealing" Katie and other programming, I don't think that is like it used to be back in the day either...see kiddies back then stations had these things called "Program Directors"..hell even "Programming Depts". Now pretty much all stations, not owned by a mom-n-pop, the corporate company makes pretty much all the programming decisions for the entire group. I watch over 6 different stations here in the South/SE, and you really can't tell a difference in any of their programming...even the time slots are often identical....as are the GPX for all their news etc

As far as the 2WTK show, I too was a bit surprised about how much time was devoted to regular news stuff like headlines and weather......of course it was only the first night so you gotta take that into consideration.....As for the guy who said he thinks is will be gone by the end of the summer, I personally would not bet on it going away.....Powers that be are WAAYYYY invested into this thing.

Is there really 2.5hr/wk worth of investigative journalism to be had in Greensboro? Not to mention the amount of manpower it takes do that that correctly. WRAL would even struggle to fill that sort of time slot.

I hesitate to disagree with you since you're with Gannett, but their stations don't all program exactly the same way; for instance, WXIA has Jeff Probst, Anderson, and Dr. Phil, none of whom are on WFMY; WLTX has "Inside Edition" at 7:30, and also a 7 PM local news, which WXIA has (the newscast, not "Inside Edition") but WFMY does not. And I believe there are a few, such as WUSA, KUSA, and KARE, that carry "Entertainment Tonight," which in Greensboro is on Hearst-owned WXII (as is "Inside Edition"). I've heard of "Colorado & Company" on KUSA and "Atlanta & Company" on WXIA, but is anyone else doing this? Also, the last time I looked, WFMY and WUSA were the only Gannett-owned CBS affiliates running "Let's Make A Deal" in the morining. So why couldn't WFMY go after Katie if she became available (I don't know if WGHP has renewed her for 2013-14)?

I'm sure that "2 Wants To Know" is a big commitment by WFMY, and perhaps (and I hope) it will make it, but I'm from Missouri (meaning "you'll have to show me"), given the amount of resistance generated by removing the 5:30 episode of Andy. In fact, I was talking to a woman the other day who actually hoped "2 Wants To Know" will fail and Andy will be back at the same old stand.

But I do agree with you: there's plenty of online streaming, and most people have the ability to record the 3 and 3:30 PM episodes, then play them back at 5:30. I do commend Channel 2 for trying something new at 5:30; I'm just not sure the Triad audience does.

And as to the person who can't see 2.5 hours/week of investigative reporting in the Triad, you have a point, but "2 Wants To Know" is obviously not going to be a local "60 Minutes" (I did say in my initial posting that I wish some larger-market station would try it; I've seen it work in Dallas). I also think Monica Laliberte on WRAL is a better investigative reporter than Tanya Rivera. And "2 Wants To Know" appears as much a tease for the 6 PM "News 2" as an investigative broadcast.

I realize I'm not as knowlegable as anyone working for Gannett and working in the high rent district on Phillips Avenue in Greensboro, but am I the only one who read TV-TD's statement "anyway in this day and age if you wanna watch Andy go watch Andy somewhere online etc..or better yet DVR Andy during the day and watch it back at 5:30p and pretend it is actually on at that time....." and found it extremly arrorgant? Its almost like saying "let them eat cake". I can't help wondering what the ratings were for Andy at 5:30 PM. In all the discussions and news releases I've read on this latest change at new-2, nothing's been said about the size of the audience at 5:30. And does Tanya consider her move to "2 wants to know" a promotion or demotion? I read on the News & Record's website last week a story that WFMY-TV expects to dominate the news with the addition of Julie Luck. Is this really the same Julie Luck I use to watch on Fox-8? I'll bet the folks over at WGHP are kicking themselves for letting her get away. And could someone please tell me which Triad station is the highest rated? I've noticed WXII claiming to be # 1 and last week on Wendover Ave I noticed a billboard claiming Fox 8 is the highest rated.

I agree that you can get your fix of "The Andy Griffith Show" online or maybe "TV Land", but keep in mind WFMY has ran this show since it debuted on CBS back in 1960, viewers should be glad this station runs the show from 3 till 4pm, not many stations are doing that these days, and i suspect Channel 2 is planning to adda 5:30pm newscast soon.

Frankly, I never figured out what Julie Luck added to FOX8 News; she had a tendency toward verbosity and Neill McNeill was forever having to cut her off so he could get to the next story. (I also think that, had Fox not sold WGHP, she'd be in one of their bigger markets right now.) As for who's number one, it ain't Channel 2, folks. I think 8 and 12 pretty much trade off the top spot (and that's despite the fact that 12 is an NBC affiliate, OK at 6 since Brian Williams is number one at 6:30, a miracle coming out of NBC primetime at 11). And if I'm thinking what you're thinking, Andy did beat both 8 and 12 at 5:30. (For the record, he does the same thing on WDBJ/7 Roanoke, beating out news on WSLS/10 and whatever's on WSET/13 since Oprah's not on anymore). So the question is sure to arise: why did Channel 2 mess with a good thing? And frankly, I don't know the answer. I'm just glad they're doing something different at 5:30, even if that puts me in a minority. (Frank admission: I could never be a programmer at Channel 2; I've been too taken with Atlanta and Dallas affiliates since the '70s and always want to import what those stations are doing.)

my guess:
demographics.
Andy got eyeballs...just the wrong ones.
remember when Who Wants to be a Millionaire
won all the ratings wars? remember the Beverly Hillbillies?
WWTBAM and BH were still #1 when both were downgraded.
why? the under-12's and over 50's were the audience and
NY agencies didn't want their brands associated with either.
here's how this relates to radio......
during a phone survey about radio stations, when asked about
your age, say "over 30" and the answer you'll get is:
"we're sorry, we have already fulfilled our quota......."

Being a native of Greensboro and having gone to high school in
Birmingham, I can remember when WFMY dominated the Triad and
WBMG (now WIAT) was the runt of the litter in the Magic City. Both
stations were, and are, CBS affiliates; Birmingham was loyal to ABC
even back when CBS was so dominant in the early '70s, when I lived
there (ABC's being on 6 and CBS's being on 42 certainly didn't help).
Now, however, it seems WFMY's ratings are going south while WIAT has
become one of CBS's strongest affiliates. I'd welcome thoughts, especially--
but not exclusively--from the Triad and Birmingham as to why this might be.
Consider:

CBS and NBC are on the same stations they were 40 years ago (WFMY and
WXII in the Triad, WIAT and WVTM in Birmingham).

Fox picked off a VHF ABC affiliate in both markets (WGHP/8 and WBRC/6).

ABC went to UHF (WXLV/45 and ABC33/40).

One thing WFMY does that other stations might not is run the epilogues. I didn't know what those were, but it's because I saw them for all those years.

I've seen all the episodes. Some many times. I don't need to see them again.

Regarding a letter to the editor I saw in several area papers (I think it was sent to more than one) Gomer did not refuse to fix the man's car on "Man in a Hurry" but Wally did. Gomer was just ignorant. Somewhere along the line they made him a genius with cars like his cousin Goober--who was himself ignorant in other areas.
