2011 PREDICTIONS

Frost Stillwell will continue to have the last laugh on the narcissistic duo, who slip further into oblivion?

I never said KABC will simulcast on 95.5. I just said KLOS will go all Talk. 95.5 should remain KLOS but drop the Classic Rock and add more talk hosts after Mark & Brian, including moving Sean Hannity from KABC. KABC has no brand value anymore. Citadel could either trade 790 AM for an FM signal in a smaller market or sell it outright and reinvest the proceeds into the KLOS brand, which is still worth something.

KSWD should sit tight. Bonneville's investment in The Sound will pay off when KLOS goes Talk. Oh, and this might force CC to hurry their KFI-FM plans.

Why would KLOS let go of their strong hold of classic rock in LA?
That would be an idiotic move IMO

We could only hope KLOS(T) will go talk. I have a friend who moved to Utah around 6 years ago. He came out last year, listened to KLOS for about 20 minutes and said "They're playing the same songs they were playing when I left." He came out for Thanksgiving this year and after hearing 2 songs accurately predicted not only that they'd play Led Zeppelin next, but also the exact song. They are so predictable you could set a watch to them. Jim Ladd is too. Hopefully, the powers that be will put them out of their misery.

Jim Laad will wax nostalgic about the counter culture of the 60's and play Peace Frog by The Doors.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

In LA, I am not sure Classic Rock is something worth holding onto anyway, especially in the long run. Someone with access to the daypart numbers can correct me if I am wrong but I understand that KLOS' numbers fall off significantly after Mark & Brian in the mornings. News and Talk on FM is a re-emerging trend nationally but nobody in LA has made the decision yet. CC is dragging their feet with KFI, leaving the door cracked open for someone to trump them. It all begins with a good morning show, which KLOS already has. KLSX did well when Howard Stern was leading things off. Had he not left for Sirius, perhaps 97.1 would still be Talk.

Here are my far fetch predictions... LA will finally get it's dance station back. Since the "Dirty Dutch" sound is "in" right now, and it sounds very similar to hard house, than hard house will make it's comeback to an LA station. Entravision will flip Super Estrella into something else, possibly into a dance station or into a 40 Principales / Exa type of station. And finally, I'll get my own afterhours mixshow where I'll have the freedom to explore different genres of dance music from around the world! Awwww I can only dream!

But it _is_ a 40 Principales / Exa type station.

Yeah, but Los 40 & Exa sound fresh, they feature a lot of new music. Heck, Exa en el DF airs David Guetta's mixshow! Super Estrella sounds stale.

With few exceptions, the News/Talk successes on FM are AM's that were successful but ageing. Moving to FM or adding a simulcast increased the under-55 numbers.

The PPM has not been all that kind to stations like WTKS in Orlando, which fell to 15th in the average of the first three PPM books in 12+ and is not even top 10 in 25-54.

KFI's strengths are its local shows. I don't see just being on FM as being the key... it's the content. And KFI is moving slowly, if at all, because it would be very hard to challenge them on content.

You know what though. I have to admit that I LOVE Super's new show on Sundays. Radio Capital kicks booty. Lots of fresh music that they don't really play any other time. It sounds very Indie.

Exa is the 4th rated pop station in the market, so it's not a good example... and it's tied with 40 Principales behind 97.7 and Digital and Oye.

The 40 Principales stations are different in every country, as are the Exas. In Mexico City, there is lots of exposure to new songs and pop artists on TV and through the multiple stations. In LA, the core audience is very different as GRC has found in 4 different format iterations, despite having the #1 pop station, the #1 AC stations (one English based, one Spanish) and the #1 regional station in Mexico City.

Sounds like any typical classic rock station... ::)

Somebody should tell Ladd that the Doors haven't made a new record in over thirty years, and Morrison had already been dead for five years when they did. Its OK to move on now. And by now most everyone else has grown up and realized the 60's aren't really what they thought they were.

Since I zing Ladd somewhat regularly in this space I will actually take the other side for a moment. He may have an unshakable addiction to the Doors and a few others, but unfortunately its not like there are a lot great rock bands out there these days to hitch a wagon to. I'm struggling to name one. This is why rock radio died a long time ago.The nineties were a complete downer with all of the grunge bands feeling sorry for themselves and the last 10 years have featured bands that have better tattoos than music. Where is the next Zeppelin, or even Van Halen? I'd rather play my old Van Halen I or Diver Down CDs than anything on rock radio today, be it modern, alt, or classic.

If there are great bands around, rock radio can't find them. If they're not around, recycling the same 500 songs won't hold it together. Rock 'n' Roll can never die? Sorry Neil, it already has. So Jim what the hell, go ahead and cue up "Roadhouse Blues" and "LA Woman" for the next set after these 8 commercials and you give those stupid tickets away to the 25th caller. One more time, you know, just like all the old times. Ahhh, the old times...

These type of quotes from "older" rock fans frustrate me. Here is a a short list of terrific current rock oriented bands in no particular order:
Coldplay
The Killers
Kaiser Chiefs
Arcade Fire
U2
Decemberists
Kings of Leon
Ween
Green Day
Black Keys

On the softer side of Rock, I would list:
Train
Keane
Vampire Weekend
Cake
Guster

You can disagree individually with any of these, or the placement of a particular band in either the harder or softer side of rock, but on average, there is a wonderful collection of current rock bands that certainly warrant attention and listening. Even if you have a deep rooted passion for The Doors and Van Halen (I don't), that should not cause you to write off the entire crop of current rock artists simply because their birth certificates list dates that are a couple decades or more past yours.

Well, my prediction was somewhat right. I just saw on Randy Wang's Facebook page that Doug Steckler will join Tim Conway Jr. every Friday night starting Jan. 7th. Woo-hoo!

This isn't a prediction because it would probably never happen but...
KPFK goes broke and sells it's beautiful, crystal clear 110K watt frequency, 90.7
KPCC goes ahead and buys it and moves to 90.7, and start a full-time AAA/Modern Rock station, (similar to The Current in Minneapolis and on KPCC'S HD3 and what KCRW plays at night) on 89.3.

A music fan can dream ;D

Now that's downright counter-revolutionary, comrade. Your comment will eventually be dealt with by the highest authorities of the Comintern. We'll see how you like THAT music! ;)

You really think they're going to drop the communist propaganda to play...music? WTF is right. They have a nice re-education camp designed just for people like you.

I'd say get rid of the useless Pacifica blabber and give KUSC 91.5 the 110K signal. Then move KXLU 88.9 to 91.5, and Pacifica can go on the weak frequency at 88.9 so not many people can hear the useless blabber from Pacifica ;D
