2013 Predictions

Tribune is split into pieces, CBS gets WGN and WGN America, News corp gets the LA Times and Chicago Tribune to turn them into another NY Post

Some smaller cable nets like Current TV will go off the air

      • Here's my prediction for 2013
        • Current TV would see big layoffs and possibly Al Gore selling the network to another owner like NBCUniversal or Disney
        • Syfy to eventually cancel Ghost Hunters after their next season. Reason I brought this up is because its spinoff International has not got any new episodes since their last airing in April. Also when Grant Wilson left the series last season, there is reason to believe that the show itself is on its way to possible cancellation. And also some of their original cast members have either moved on to GHI or left the show altogether(Kris Williams moved on to GHI, but because there was no new episodes since last spring, she is believed to be no longer a part of the Ghost Hunters team.
[*]Khloe Kardashian to announce that she won't be hosting its third season for the X-Factor

        • Maury Povich would announce his retirement at some point.
        • NBC to cancel its last remaining soap opera on its network Days of Our Lives

IIRC, CBS is maxed out in Chicago, plus I thought that two top-four stations couldn't be co-owned. Or is WGN-TV behind WFLD nowadays, at #5?

In any case, I can see Tribune being allowed to keep the newspapers and TV stations in NY, Chicago, and LA, while divesting one or the other in the other markets where it owns both. I can also see it selling off AM 720 to Clear Channel, forcing a chain reaction that begins with the Premiere conservobabblers moving there, off of WLS. That, in turn, would cause Cumulus to drop talk on The Formerly Big 89, and switch it to CBS Sports Radio, giving Jim Rome a Chicago outlet (not that anyone in Chicago cares, but it looks good to advertisers to be available in the #3 market).

I don't know what kind of shape they're in, but if something happened to Tribune, I wonder if Weigel would be interested in grabbing Antenna TV to gain a monopoly on digital subnets and expand its Me-TV brand further.

  • Based on the popularity of "The Walking Dead" alone, CBS or Time Warner buys majority stake, if not all, of AMC Networks.
  • CBS buys Starz Media. Starz and Showtime merge and reduce number of channels in their "suite" to two distinct brands: "Showtime" for original series, and "Starz" for the remaining big-studio movie packages they have left.
  • E.W. Scripps will cancel one of their two "Wheel"/"Jeopardy!" replacement shows and return timeslot back to stations
  • Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection, based on recent class-action lawsuit filed against company for failure to pay performers. Several timeslots filled by Allen's shows end up being filled by infomercials

Sony Pictures might have a thing or two to say about that one. I think they may still own half of "Days Of Our Lives", with NBC owning the other half.

It's not out of the question that "DOOL" could end up on CBS in the event of an NBC cancellation.

By the way....How are the ratings these days for "The Talk" anyway?

Predictions are always a fun thing to do. :)

  • In reaction to Sinclair and Nexstar's buying sprees, companies that put all of their stations up for sale will put them up individually (or as close as possible to it), thus putting all potential buyers on equal footing. Prospective buyers will have to make separate bids for each station. Imagine the Young stations going to ten different buyers
  • In some markets, we'll see some third-tier (and lower) stations merge to become stronger stations, either donating their no-longer-needed licenses to non-profit or minority broadcasters or just returning them to the FCC... thus fulfilling the FCC's desire to free up spectrum.
  • Ion will announce plans to sell off most of its stations and relaunch as a basic cable channel.
  • Either one of the existing cable news channels will shift from their current news/talk format to more of a hard news format... or a new player will fill that hole.
  • The increasing popularity of BBC America in the US will lead to the launch of a similar channel devoted to all of the Canadian shows that haven't aired here.
  • CSI:NY will either be canceled or renewed for one final season.
  • Friday nights will no longer be referred to as "death slot" territory.
  • A new Star Trek TV series will be announced for a 2014 launch... on cable.

*ABC reduces their daytime schedule.
*Speaking of ABC, Hearst or Scripps could be seeking a merger with Disney.
*Allbritton be the next on the selling block.
*Now that EDM is getting more traction in the US, make we'll finally see a Dance Music Channel, like MTV Dance in Europe and bpm:tv in Canada.
*More TV show reboots/remakes.
*Comcast and Clear Channel get engaged.
*More short-lived shows show up on YouTube out of nowhere.
*The studios take notice and pulls the short-lived shows from YouTube, even if they lost the copyrights.
*The studios seek out places like South Korea or the Philippines to adapt their dramas into American versions.
*Rabbit TV is the "Must-Have" item for ever household.

Has there been any sign of ABC wanting out of TV station ownership? Both of these groups are probably the best picks if ABC did want out though.

As for Allbritton, if they were sold I could see it being done as several smaller purchases since WJLA skews the group and it's unknown if they'd bundle NewsChannel 8 and/or Politico with the TV stations. That said, to cover the inevitable bases...

Sinclair could buy the group whole but would need some creative work in Charleston (where WCIV would join WTAT and WWMP) and Birmingham (WCFT-WJSU joining WTTO-WDBB and WABM) and would have to dump WHP in Harrisburg to take WHTM which is a given. WJLA would be a challenge for them since big market stations with developed news departments are new territory for Sinclair.

Nexstar would have to shed one of their duos to get KATV or somehow convince the FCC that one company having their hands in five stations is not a threat of any sort. Harrisburg is more cut and dry, controlling the #2 station is better than owning the #5 station which is controlled by your biggest rival under a heritage LMA. Again, WJLA would be a challenge and new territory though it would benefit WHAG as a duopoly of the two would pass muster a la Entravision owning WFDC and WJAL.

Best solution: A Hearst, Scripps, or Hubbard (WJLA and WTOP radio under one roof would work well) buys some if not all of the stations. NewsChannel 8 and Politico go to the Post.

Have anyone hread anything about all Sinclair Brocasting stations doing anything to replace
(Cool Music TV Network) that are still blank or went dark on thier subchannel to something else like Antenna TV or Cozi TV in 2013?

These predictions are usually wrong and sometimes just funny.
So..here goes:
CNN will slip in the ratings under Jeff Zucker's leadership.
Dish will abandon "The Hopper" after several networks refuse to renew their contracts.
Rupert Murdoch will finally hand over the reigns of his company to one of his kids.
Katie Couric will leave ABC after her talk show loses ratings and affiliates.
Nielsen will announce plans to use Arbitron's PPM technology for TV ratings.
Netflix will start to offer live programming.

How? (Other than cancelling General Hospital)
*Speaking of ABC, Hearst or Scripps could be seeking a merger with Disney.
Sure - Only if Hearst dumps affiliates KITV 4 in Honolulu, HI & KOCO 5 in Oklahoma City & both dump those not affiliated with ABC

Having said that, I'd throw Belo in with Scripps & Hearst provided they do the same
*Allbritton be the next on the selling block.
And WJLA 7 would most assuredly become an O&O
*Comcast and Clear Channel get engaged.
Would be great so that iHeartRadio could replace Music Choice
*More short-lived shows show up on YouTube out of nowhere.
Actually I'm looking for more TV shows to be SPAWNED FROM YouTube much like The Young Turks was
*The studios seek out places like South Korea or the Philippines to adapt their dramas into American versions.
Umm.....I don't think so
*Rabbit TV is the "Must-Have" item for ever household.
We'll see.....

Cheers & 73 :D

Uh... aren't KITV and KOCO both ABC affiliates?

Yes. Both are money makers for Hearst and ABC touts them as their best affils. I don't see Hearst spinning them off.

Guaranteed to happen during 2013, or my name isn't Pedro Gonzales Gonzales:

*During the Super Bowl, some religious yahoos will try to find a way to sneak their JOHN 3:16 sign on camera, even though the NFL now has a policy against religious signs.

*Odell Harris, aka Miss Cleo, will continue to try to market herself as a potential talk show host.

*Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, will continue to be reported as a major news story as if it only happens once and not every year.

*Hockey fans, sponsors, and networks will get fed up with the lockout, and unrest from them will gradually lead to the ouster of incompetent, contentious commissioner Gary Bettman (at least I hope).

*Hank Williams, Jr. will try to get his "All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night" song reinstated on Monday Night Football after discovering that it wasn't exactly missed by the public.

Expect these in 2013:

*CBS merges with Time Warner
*Clear Channel gets sold to Comcast
*Apple attempts to buyout Disney
*Fox Sports revamps it's channel deck:
Fox Soccer-Fox Sports 1
Speed-Fox Sports 2
FuelTV-Fox Sports 3
Fox Soccer Plus-Fox Sports World
*Fox decides to end pursuit of Catholic 7
*No network goes after what's left of the Big East
*At least one major market NBC station leaves for another network
