50,000 Watt AM Stations - Why do they exist?

You probably know this, DE, from your Cleveland days -- Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) has an 'h' at the end unlike cities of similar names in California, Kansas and Texas.

Yeah, I do that all the time. My applogy to all those from the Steel City.

That's because HEINZ insisted on the "H"

Dave & Dave,

I do know the difference between skywave and groundwave and salt water path. That's my whole point!

WCAU was receivable all DAY (DAY is when the sun is in the sky and you don't need a flashlight to see where you're walking - on groundwave)

and NIGHT - mix of skywave and groundwave with cancellation at times (NIGHT is when it's partly moony, starry and dark outside).

Holy crap! And yes, I know the wonders of salt water path on AM when the 400 watter in Pleasantville NJ gets DX mail from Greenland, Iceland, Sweden, England and France.

My point is simply this boys, 1210 is running on flat tires today. It's a Nascar race-ready competitor running on deisel instead of Sunoco 120 octane. It's simply sad to see such a once-great station with the heritage of William Paley, now barely covering the market and run into the ground.

And as far as 1180 being a "science experiment", long live the independant broadcaster! Keep the power to the tower 1180, 740, 1370.

That station is getting to Scaninavia and Europe on skywave, not groundwave. The flatness of water makes any intermediary skip less prone to be attenuated or diflected, but the fact is that the Pleasanton station is getting into Europe mostly because it is on a clear channel in Europe due to the 9 kHz allocations, and because of the use of very directional Beverage antennas by the DXers... and it is 100% skywave at that distance.

As to 1180, the good thing is that it is apparently part of or associated with Cary Simpson's Allegheny Mt. Network group, and Cary is one of the best smaller market broadcasters in the nation and a fine person as well... so whatever it does cover is going to get the best that such a facility can offer.
