560

Why not simply simucast one of their FM stations on 560 AM ?
KNBR is already an AM-FM simulcast. Cumulus' only other FM station is KSAN, "The Bone". That wouldn't have been a viable AM format even in 1975.

Hey! Maybe they could put "Nash" on it! Not referring to the automotive marque although that somehow seems more appropriate for AM.

Truthfully, KNBR could be put solely on 104.5, 680 assumes the secondary programming from 1050, and Cumulus hands in both 560 and 1050. The licenses at this point are expendable and the audience barely exists.

The Giants may still want the reach of the AM signal, though that wouldn't foreclose the scenario that you've described.

The messaging from Cumulus has been so muddled (and the Chronicle’s reporting so poor) regarding 104.5 and 680 that it’s caused confusion.

Here’s the deal:

Until and unless someone says otherwise, KNBR is building studios at Levi’s Stadium. They should be ready in time for NFL preseason in August.

I don’t do predictions often, but I really think KNBR AM/FM gets sold to either the 49ers organization or to team owner Denise DeBartolo York personally when the station moves in.

1050 becomes superfluous and probably goes dark and the license turned in.

I have two people in a position to know who have told me that advertising agencies have been informed that Cumulus is taking 560 dark and turning in the license. Likely next month.

That leaves 107.7 and 810. Cumulus either holds them or not, and that’s really the only big question mark at this point.

Relevant Radio could buy it, diplex it with KSFB with 5kw day and 1kw nd nights and then spin 1260 to a Catholic Spanish operator.
1260 is not the best signal in San Jose, which is where a huge part of the SF metro Hispanic population is.

No surprise there. The fact that the quality of the Chronicle's media coverage left the door open for someone like Rich Lieberman to occupy that niche, at the cost of putting up with his hysterics, speaks for itself.

Cumulus just went through some effort to bolster 810, at the expense of 560. And there's the cohabitation arrangement with Bonneville. Would an SMA with Bonneville be possible for the remnants of the Cumulus cluster?

Cumulus may view 1050 as ballast to be thrown overboard the next time the numbers aren't met. So I wouldn't count it out quite yet.

Probably an even chance among the three possibilities: whether Mike's scenario plays out with the Giants or with the Santa Clara 49ers, or whether something else altogether happens.

The only thing I feel confident in guessing is that 560 will go dark in the next few weeks. The license might not be turned in right away to give Cumulus time to shop it around. However, they probably realize that the problem with selling AMs in the San Francisco area is that there are no channels remaining for FM translators, and there were just a few to start with, so a standalone AM is going to remain AM-only. The only halfway-decent cross-service translators are the ones for KVTO (93.7) and KZDG (99.3). The rest are shoehorned in with a lot of resulting compromises. The result is likely to be the end of broadcasting on 560; the open question is how long it will take.

The wildcard here may be VCY. I know they go for FM stations, and they're clearly interested in the Bay Area, den of sin and iniquity that they may believe it to be. Would they be willing to settle for an AM station? FM really adds nothing to their programming; when they had KREV, they broadcast in mono. I give that one about a 50:1 chance of happening.

At least we can be assured, I believe, that there will be no loop redirecting listeners from 1050 to another station.

All this is speculation; facts will reveal themselves in due time.

True. They could spin it off to anyone or turn it off.
Let's go into really gonzo territory here: KEST could take it over. They're already on that tower. It might make up for having their FM translator squashed by hordes of angry classical-music fans upset about interference to KXSC and telling the FCC to get KEST off KXSC's lawn. K285HD, we hardly knew ye.

Cantonese opera, anyone?

It's not going to the Giants. The tell is the full-time studio at Levi's. They could have done the same at Oracle Park, where there's a longer season, more games and a better location. They didn't.

Maybe no one suggested it to them.

In any event, my counter-argument is that there are many fewer football games per season than baseball games. I know football fans can talk for hours about the most minute trivia, but is that a formula for success, or even just standing still? Plus, it's the Bay Area, not Denver or Kansas City. There's much less football obsession around the Bay. As for the Giants, sure they could remain on KNBR. But they seem to want to have at least some degree of direct control over carriage, hence the ownership link (which may no longer be in effect, I'll grant). You'd also have to think about KGMZ: if KNBR became identified primarily as a 49ers station, there's nothing that would keep the Giants from going elsewhere. I'm sure KGMZ would be happy to have them. Then KNBR would have lots of time to fill six months or more out of the year. Sure, they could fill it, but it would be crap.

Upon reconsideration, I think I'd give it even chances for a sale (to somebody) or for Cumulus to keep KNBR for now.

I agree that KNBR is the one marquee property Cumulus has in the Bay Area.

I think there's a black swan fluttering in the background that we can't see, i.e. there's a possibility that hasn't be brought up in this and related threads.

It doesn't have to be a one-or-the other thing. iHeart and the Dodgers are partners in KLAC LA. It could be the same there here.

We may see more of this as sports teams flex their media muscle.

No one should HAVE to suggest it to them, Mark. They carry both teams. When they were considering moving all broadcast operations into the stadium that hosts nine home games per season and is in Santa Clara....they'd be considering the stadium that hosts 81 home games per season and is on the Embarcadero.

And given that it was my response to your suggestion of "maybe it's the Giants"...c'mon. If there was consideration of a sale to the Giants, that's where the studios would be going. But they're not. They're moving into Levi's Stadium and will be on the air by August.
