610 still KFRC, 106.9 still KEAR

Just in case some sort of switch was made overnight (please stop laughing), I recorded 106.9 FM from 11 p.m. last night until 7 a.m. this morning.

The recording includes eight top-of-the-hour station IDs, every one of them identical:

"We're glad you found us. KEAR, San Francisco, or 610 AM KFRC, San Francisco."

Although the FCC database now shows 610 AM as KEAR and 106.9 FM as KIFR, Family hasn't put the call letters in use yet.

If a station has been assigned new calls by the FCC, at what point is it required to begin using them?

It won't be for a while. You can stop recording every night. Probably a week minimum if not more. They are no where ready to kick this thing off.

I wasn't talking about the format. I was talking about the call letters.

The FCC assigned the new KIFR call letters for 106.9 to Family Stations, not to Infinity. The FCC has also officially assigned the KEAR call letters to 610 -- at the request of Family Stations.

One precedent on this is when KABL-FM (92.1) became KKDV recently. The FCC database still listed the station as KABL-FM for nearly a week after the station began using the KKDV calls on the air. In this case, the FCC has already granted the new calls -- to Family Stations -- but the station isn't using them yet.

Which really begs the question: Why has it taken Infinity with over six months
to get a new format ready and in place so long to do anything? Do any of you think it would have taken Clear Channel or Entercom or any of the other major
players in the radio business this long to have a ready format in place?????
I sure don't! Infinity is run by an inept bunch of radio wannabe's. Even KM,
David Eduardo, or Amador Bustos could have, and would have done a better job with this new station launch!

They have known what they were going to do with the format for quite some time. However, they had to wait for the A's season to end before they could take over the station. Now they are just putting the finishing touches on things. New studios aren't exactly finished yet...which could tend to cause a bit of a hold up.

Six months to build studios? You've got to be kidding right? What a lame excuse!!!! Its called inept management and thats it!

No...the studios haven't taken that long. Only been on that about 2 months. Original kick off was supposed to be as soon as the A's were done...but all talent and other employees of the station are not yet in place. It will be soon. Don't criticize yet. Give it a chance.

Blackhole,

You sound very close to the situation... Good luck to you. I hear the studios are AMAZING (and no, I'm not joking or being sarcastic).<P ID="signature">______________

Blackhole is correct. Several things glitched Infinity right from the very beginning, meaning, while the sale itself was still in play, the first of which was the announced departure of Howard Stern. It became something a thread that "we have to replace Howard," starting with the Infinity brain trust. They quickly got over that hump, but apparently, somebody forgot to tell the applicants because many of them have sounded like Stern wannabes.

The station has set a high standard for what it wants on the air, at least according to their vision --that might not fit yours Allison, and that's okay, but while your criticism has a degree of merit to it, it might be a little harsh to compare these guys to an Amador Bustos. There's a hope here to achieve something that's driven more by creativity than the bottom line --something that, admittedly, hasn't always been a strong suit in corporate radio. Here, the leash is a bit longer, and when things aren't that black and white, it's not as easy to find what you're looking for (hence the hiring hang ups); further, when the pressure is on to deliver (and it is), you're not going to be flippent and say, "Oh, well, put Mancow on." I just think they figured it would be easier than it's been.

True, as the clock ticks and the brass says, "so, how's it going?" you start to think, "okay, maybe I'll give those Doghouse guys an audition after all." And then you have to hope you're not compromising on what you hope to accomplish. I'm not defending management or trashing it; it's just to give you an idea of where things are at for these people. It's a fine line, but they're trying. Maybe they'll succeed.

As for the studios... state of the art, though some of the logistics are a little slippery (visibility between the screeners and the studio, for instance). And the view out the studio window: nothing special. Then again, it's not like there's much to see on Battery or any of its side streets.

I suppose they could've chosen to build studios at the top of the TransAmerica Building if not for those damned terrorists.

The actual view is on to Broadway.

The studios are amazing!! Anyone who knows anything about radio would appreciate working in such a well put together, thought out, planned environment. I am sure whomever ends up there will be beyond happy, and probably will have never worked with this caliber set up before.
