Can anyone please explain to me the purpose of the mish-mash they call programming on 620 and 770. I know the quacks pay the bills, but does anyone actually listen to this stuff?!?

I listen to the MUSIC portions of the schedule:

AM Drive (Frankie Day), early afternoons (Big Ray Edwards) and 7.30-sign off on 770 KFB

Nights and overnights on 620 KHB; if you listen then, you're likely to hear one of two GREAT Pittsburgh jocks, Clarke Ingram or Caleb Michaels. If you're REALLY lucky, like I was in June, you'll hear them both together.

BTW--Try their contests. EASY wins.

I've never heard of Caleb Michaels, but Clarke's a long-time friend, and I'm not just saying this because of that...he sounds *great*. It transforms that station into something else.

Unfortunately, as suggested, it's likely the medical infomercials and other brokered programming (polka, etc.) that's paying the bills. But at least Clarke and others get to have fun and do high-energy, fun sounding music programming!

Couldn't have said it better myself Johnny.........

I would imagine because its on both 620 and 770, at least twice as many people listen by default than the audience of 660 AM.

Okay, dammit, you have dragged me out of the woodwork. Post #1, people.

I always wanted to be an AM boss jock. I'm 30 years too late but here I am.

The medical shows and infomercials do indeed pay the bills on 620 and 770.

Here's when you'll hear oldies:

On 770:
6-9 AM, Frankie Day (50's/60's)
11:30 AM-Noon (automated 60's/70's)
1-4 PM, Big Ray Edwards (50's/60's)
6 PM-sign off (automated 60's/70's)
All but 10 AM-1 PM on Saturday
9-11 AM and 5 PM-sign off on Sunday.

On 620:
6-8 AM, Barry Banker (60's/70's)
7:15-10 PM Wed, Frankie Day (50's/60's)
5-7 PM Sat, Jim Parsons (50's/60's)
Plus the automation.

The automation (with geeked-up PAMS jingles if I'm in the mood) starts at:
7:30 PM (Mon & Tue)
10 PM (Wed)
8 PM (Thu)
9 PM (Fri)
7:15 PM (Sat & Sun)

Guess who schedules the music. Send complaints to this E-mail address if you hear Barry Banker playing "Convoy" or "Dueling Banjos."

We are adding songs every day, so keep listening.

Remember, 620 is KHB and 770 is KFB.

I could tell you who Caleb Michaels is, but then I'd have to kill you.

P.S. I feel obliged to mention that the infomercials and Sunday religious programs have recently been re-imaged with PAMS source material. Listen, if you dare.

Welcome, Clarke!

One thing you, in typical modesty, forgot to tell us...when do YOU crack open the live microphone on either station? I'll have to drive down there and maybe even drop in on you...

When he's in the mood to pretend he's Larry Lujack or The Real Don Steele, Bob Stevens transforms into Caleb Michaeals. Sorry Clarke, inquiring minds want to know!

Well, I'll be damned. I'll tell ya what, both Clarke and Bob are EXCELLENT radio personalities, and 620's nighttime programming when live is a great experience!

But I think it needs "Johnny Morgan" to round it all out.

Well, Grizzled Vet, of the Pittsburgh Radio-Info board....ZAP! You're Morganized!

Does 620 have city coverage in Pittsburgh after sundown. It seemed to a few years ago, but lately, no. Where is the transmitter and what's the power?

Can I voice track an real oldies show from Florida.

I've had no problems in the city--a little bit of fading, some slight static around power lines, but actually pretty good, considering the towers are in Irwin--about 25 miles east/southeast of the city--and at 50 watts, gloriously non-directional day and night. The low dial position, as well as my tolerant ears, help alot.

The things you'll do for good radio...

We don't voice-track. And aren't you glad.

With respect to 620's power, the following may be of interest:

KHB is 5,500 watts from sunrise to sunset - a GREAT signal which covers parts of five states (and narrowly misses several others). Our pre-sunrise power is 500 watts, and that covers the market pretty well.

At sunset we drop to 500 watts.
Half an hour later, 300 watts.
Half an hour later, 85 watts.
An hour after that, 50 watts.

At our studios, using a GE Superadio III in wideband mode and a Select-A-Tenna, the big 50 watts comes in fine, with a little heterodyning. I make some wonderful tapes of 620 on this rig. Hear 'em and you'll never say "AM radio sounds bad" again.

Re: when I'm live, it's catch-me-when-you-can, just like Bob, oops, I mean, Caleb Michaels. We're both too busy with station operations to do it all the time. Wish it were otherwise.

In my last post I forgot to mention Jay Thurber, the latest addition to our staff. You can usually hear him 9 to 11 AM Sundays on 770.

That's interesting. I never knew you had a "four-tiered" power-down like that.

Shadyside, Brentwood (future COL, ha!), other side of Mt. Washington, even down in Washington County (Fredericktown area) it comes in pretty well on my Toyota Corolla radio--only a little fading, some slight whistle, and oh those damn powerlines.

Saturday nights are pretty good guesses (seems to work for me--not every Saturday, but this was when I heard Clarke and Caleb together). Also, I think Monday nights (with Caleb Michaels) have been pretty good for me, driving back to Cleveland--I've won so many lottery tickets from him!

(For the record, the farthest I've received the 50-watt nighttime signal (10pm or so) was just outside Warren, Ohio. That's about 100 miles from Irwin. I've DX-ed it from Cleveland around 8pm or so in the winter (Howe Road south, Strongsville, Ohio); I can habitually get the daytime signal like a local in C-Town.)

Clarke invited me to stop by last year... and you get into the Boss Radio feel when you see the big ol' cart stand with all the jingle carts.

He warned me that next time I come in, the boss may want me to go on air... I'll always make sure I have my headphones with me when I'm around.

Keep up the great work, Clarke!
