640

how well is 640---WWJZ heard at night in Philllly? (950 watts)

it has a massive daytime signal. (50 kw)

I recall when WWJZ was airing standards & it sounded like some
guys were playing 78 RPM records. ( old music played by old announcers)

I have received them over 200 miles from their Xmtr during the day, at night its a totally different story here in Center City they are non-existent. I believe when they were standards they used one of the WIFI towers in Florence NJ, not the Mt. Holly site. Included is a pic of their 4 block tower array....

I live about 15 miles west of center city and can faintly hear them at night with a lot of interference from combinations WHLO, WXSM, and occasionally WNNZ. A far cry from the "old days" when I used to be able to receive KFI at night once in a while.

Do they and WNNZ need to protect the 640 in Toronto? I think that's the reason both drop to ~ 1 kW at night.

Would the proposed new AM radio rules alllow WWJZ, WNTP, WKDN to operate at 50 kw at night.? ( directional)
And would WNWR---1540 possibly be able to do the same ? (50 klw ---directional----fulll time )

The quick answer is NO.The new rules would change the radiation efficiency rules, for one thing, but otherwise things would remain the same. 640 and 990 still jave to maintain their protections to Toronto (640)and Winnipegand the now-dark Providence RI(990). 950 would likely cause problems with cochannel WWJ Detroit, and would wipe out the 950 in MD. WNWR would get into a dogfight with Albany using its present pattern, and would also affect KXEL on the back of the pattern. The main lobe would more than likely step on ZNS-1 Nassau(1540 is a Bahamian clear)due to the main lobe being pointed almost at Atlantic City. WNTP's Rene Tetro can probably speak more to this than I can.

I'm in Haddon Heights- near haddonfield. And I can get a moderate signal from WWJZ- But I've been as far south as virginia Beach and was able to pick them up during the day.

Just for the record, and out of curiosity, I took a look at the FCC Database to check out WWJZ's night pattern. According to the FCC's pattern plot of their night signal, WWJZ only puts about 340 watts towards center city Philly at night (@ 270 degrees from the array).

Someone heard WWJZ in Bermuda in the daytime. That is pretty impressive!

And I thought getting WPHT at night a week ago in the Florida Keys was impressive. It was neat being able to hear the Temple-UConn game live as I was driving across the Overseas Highway.
