680 The Fan Big Announcement Friday 9AM

There's a spot running on 680 The Fan saying "We're giving you a front row ticket Friday morning as we continue to grow our family." Matt Chernoff just said it has to do with the direction of the radio station.

IIRC Cumulus (counting the Dickey stations) are maxed out. The "Stews" might be close to the end of their contract "cool down". Or worse they are going to a lot of the CBS sports network on 680.

They have room for one more on either band.

I thought the limit was 5. What is the limit?
Depends on the size of the market. For ATL, it's 8, with no more than 5 on either band. Translators don't count.

Cumulus:
AN106.7
Kicks 101.5
Rock 100.5
Q100 (99.7)

Dickey:
680 The Fan
1230
1340

Why would they hold on to those 2 flea-powered stations? They could donate those stations to the local universities (1230 to KSU & 1340 to GSU) if better stations came along for purchase.

new show featuring Sandy Golden & maybe Ray Mariner.

Possibly called "The Front Row" I'm guessing 9a-Noon?

I sure hope not. First they take away Mike & Mike by replacing it with The Rude Awakening years ago. They better not take away Dan Patrick too, now that I have begun to enjoy it (so much more enjoyable to listen to compared to his years on ESPN Radio). I know both shows are on TV but man I hate turning on a TV to listen to radio programs.

I would not rule out adding a station to the market. As stated above, the two 1000 watt AM stations are not really worth keeping. They could donate them or turn in the license. Actually, the 1340 would probably bring in a few bucks if sold. I am not so sure about WFOM.

The 1230 and 1340 could be worth something if the FCC ever gets smart and allows Class C and D AM's to move a "new" expanded band, the old VHF TV channels 2-6. These channels do not work as well for digital TV as the UHF part of the spectrum. The cell phone companies don't want this part of the spectrum and the FCC could set a minimum price say 25 or 50 cents per person in the 60DB coverage for the AM to migrate then auction the rest. The FCC could collect some $$, and expand the "ownership" base. The NAB would have a fit, but sooner or later the ownership limits caps would be raised due the the # of stations increasing.

I like this idea. There aren't a lot of DTV broadcasters left on the low VHF band; most of them moved at first or later to high VHF or UHF. This would increase the size of the FM band by 50% (78-88MHz); even moreso on a practical basis if the band were restricted to digital signals only (assuming the problems with DTV in this band wouldn't apply to digital radio) and signals could be packed tighter both by frequency and geographically. It would also might help the adoption of HD Radio, if that became the exclusive standard for the FM x-band.

Moving the class D's to an FM x-band would also make the class A clears more meaningful again.

GSU doesn't need 1340 when they have 100kW FM Album 88. But either Southern Tech or KSU could use 1230.

Or could it be that suggestion I can up with on the other posting All News 106.7 The Grand Tour.

I said quote: "With 680 The Fan and All-News 106.7 being related, why don't the two stations swap their call letters? Let 680 The Fan switch to WYAY-AM (the "yay" in WYAY refers to how a cheerleader or a sports fan reacts to a team) and All-News 106.7 switch to WCNN, because much of the crew were former CNN Headline News and CNN Radio employees (most notably Chuck Roberts). The one drawback with that is that All News 106.7 is an ABC Radio affiliate." That could be that.

I believe the 1340 antenna is on the WCLK/91.9 tower. Aren't there 5 black colleges in the complex where one of them could take care of 1340?

Actually, if my fuzzy memory is correct, WCLK was hanging on the side of the 1340 tower. That tower is/was (not sure about the current contract) owned by 1340 and they leased the land that it sits on. Actually, a parking lot was built in the early 80s beside the tower and the ground system is under the pavement. When WCLK came on the air, they hung their bays on the side of the 1340 tower. WCLK has since moved... not sure, but I believe they moved to the Richland tower (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Anyway, you are correct that one of the institutions there could take 1340 or some religious organization would probably buy it... it actually has a night signal in Atlanta. One way or the other, I would not let that 1000 watt station ever stop a deal for a major signal... even if it means turning in the license.

Your fuzzy memory is more correct than my assumptions, Sir. (I just thought the location of the tower placed it on campus. Therefore...) :D
