I think "Tiny Dancer" fits the format that AC used to be but gets further away from the present one, with each passing day. Even some early 2000s ballads are starting to sound out of place!
I know, every time I hear Lee Ann Womack's annoying, sappy, irritation, mind numbing "I Hope You Dance" and Lady Gaga's obnoxious music back-to-back it just throws my day into wack.
Lee Ann Womack is starting to turn up on Zaxby's commercials now, about as sure a sign as any that her career is nearly over. By the way, the country version of "I Hope You Dance" is worse than the pop version.

Starting? Her TV commercials have aired where I live so many times I say "Enough already!"

It's unfortunate that these songs are considered to be too sleepy for AC anymore.

Really, Estefan's only two bigger hits that could fit radio today, would be her early solos: "Words Get In the Way" and "Don't Wanna Lose You". Her remakes of those 70's classics she did in the 90's, just don't sound appealing at all. The originals are so much better.

As for Mariah Carey, her first two huge #1's would do well, as well as "Fantasy" from 1995 and "Emotions" from 1991. "Anytime You Need A Friend" from '93 is good too.

Absolutely! Give me the original artists' versions of anything later mangled by Gloria Estefan! And the same goes for the original artists' versions of anything later mangled by LeAnn Rimes, too! ::)

I've always been a huge fan of Mariah Carey and love all those songs. I still get to hear "Emotions" from time to time on AC stations. "Anytime You Need A Friend" is a gem of a song that is so underrated and has become pretty obscure. I'd love to hear all those Mariah songs on AC radio these days.

Wow, I've complained on these boards in the past about obscure gems from the 50's to the 70's not being aired anymore on classic hit stations. Now were talking 1993 music?? Unbelievable, time is passing us by way too fast! Sad. :'(

Have you by chance heard Pitbull's "Back in Time" and the huge classic it samples?? Talk about mangling an oldie! I shouldn't complain though, I downloaded it. :D

Well, "Anytime You Need A Friend" was only played on the radio for maybe a few months up to a year after it was a hit. By the end of '94 or early '95, it was pretty much gone. That's just an example of a song that received some airplay and then quickly disappeared.

"Anytime You Need a Friend" was the fourth single from an album which saw its first two singles go to #1, and the third one to #3. "...Friend" only reached #12, and just basically got "lost in the shuffle," not only among the other singles from that album, but in Mariah's career as a whole. She had so many hits, especially during the '90s, that it was easy for some of them to "fall through the cracks" and be "forgotten."

The only Mariah Carey song I ever hear anymore is "Emotions." She had so many "soft" tracks, but they just don't fit in to what the AC format is trying to do these days, I guess. I'm looking for a day soon that even "Because You Loved Me" will be too soft for the format; Celine Dion, for the most part, has lost most AC airplay, and she was at one time a staple.

Madonna's 90s material has been pretty much forgotten, unfortunately. Her post-"Vogue" tracks have faded in to oblivion. Other than the occasional "Take A Bow" spin, the majority of her 90s music hasn't lasted.

Gloria Estefan had some awesome songs, but again, many are probably too slow for the format now. I never hear her anymore, and I think her rendition of "Turn The Beat Around" as well as "Conga" are very 2012 AC-friendly.

Madonna's bigger hits and accomplishments were mainly in the 80's. From "Like A Virgin" ('84) to "Like a Prayer" ('89) and everything in between. Personally, "Like A Prayer", "Who's That Girl" and "La Isla Bonita" are classic Madonna! "Take a Bow", "This Used To Be My Playground" and "Power of Goodbye" are very good too from the 90's. She's a legend!

Several of Madonna's 80s songs that I love that I never hear are "Who's That Girl", "True Blue", and "Cherish." I think "Cherish" gets rare airplay, more than the others, but not much.

Can AC not move on and leave that decade to classic hits, adult hits, and classic rock?

This is the problem with radio. Listeners don't sit down with a bunch of charts and say "Well that song has to be dropped because the stats say so"

If a songs tests well and is a listener favorite, why drop it ?

I'm going out on a limb and say September, Love Shack, Old Time Rock and Roll, and many other so called "aged out" songs still test well for the format, and probably better than some of the current offerings.

At least I haven't heard any Carpenters or Barbra Streisand music.

There are some songs you don't play ;D

I don't understand any other reason why AC stations now have to hold on so to 70s/80s music and burned-out recurrents instead of embracing more NEW music. The top 15 on AC right now is fantastic and has a lot of variety, better than the format has had in years, from "Call Me Maybe" to "Happy Pills" to "Wide Awake" to "We Are Young." They should take advantage of it.

Keep in mind most AC stations are slower to add new product, and most new adds are in a light rotation

Same thing holds true about Madonna that I said about Mariah Carey a page or two back: she's had so many hits that it is almost inevitable that some of them will fall through the cracks and never be heard on radio ever again.

I like Huey Lewis' "Back in Time".

I read in the newspaper that during the chimpanzee period (yes, that means what you think it means) on what was my adult standards station at the time they played Mariah Carey. Probably "Vision of Love" and "Endless Love", but I don't recall hearing her.

"Take a Bow" is my favorite Madonna song. "Borderline" is also good.

My favorite Gloria Estefan song is "Bad Boys". However, my station plays "Words Get in the Way", "Here We Are" and "Don't Wanna Lose You". Or did. I can't remember when I last heard them. I don't care for those.

Don't forget "Live To Tell" from '86! It's another Madonna song that I like a lot which haven't got much airplay either.

Except, WLMG/New Orleans played it a lot before their playlist update back in February, but it seems like "Live To Tell" slowly faded away from their playlist after their playlist update. WMGF/Orlando also played "Live To Tell" occasionally earlier this year as well, but it seems like "Live To Tell" have faded away from their playlist completely. Recently, I still see KOST/Los Angeles and WLIT/Chicago playing "Live To Tell" once in a while.

Also, if you're a 25-54 and listen to CHR (and even Hot AC) and AC, since basically everything on AC is a previous CHR hit, you're already going to sound stale/burned to the listener if you consider "Set Fire To The Rain", "The One That Got Away", or "Stronger" your "newest" music - the slow moving chart is another problem at AC..

Very true, AC loves to add songs to the play-list that Hot AC and CHR have already been playing for 6 months and treat it like "New Music". Then they pound that particular song to death, most of Adele's stuff is a very good example.
