740 still looking for people to buy time

I was listening to WNYH this afternoon and the DJ said they're still looking for people to buy air time. This time however they gave out a phone number with 718 as the area code instead of a toll free number. (718 is Brooklyn right?) Play music, host a talk show, or whatever you want. Good time slots available days, nights, or weekends.

My comment: Good time slots available at night? 43 watts? I've got light bulbs more powerful than that.

You could probibly get a good rate at night. I just hope the salespeople tell the buyers exactly what kind of coverage area they could get at night. When I worked at WNYG during their oldies heyday in the late 1980's/ early 1990's there were brokered shows on at night (mostly Sundays), although most of them did not last long for the salespeople neglected to tell most their clients about the 38 watt giant that 1440 was at night. I had to tell them as I was powering down the transmitter. Because nobody wanted to spend the money to take care of the transmitter, tower & grounding system at that time you would start to lose the station after about four miles.

According to the FCC website, their offices are on Queens Blvd near Kew Gardens.

What about the 1kw giant during the day ;)

Happy New Year Frank!

>> What about the 1kw giant during the day ;)<<

True. I liked the fact that we were direcitional, only we were not supposed to be. Whenever Big Ed or I cut the lawn around the tower the signal going west would dramaticly improve. And the origional WBAB-FM antennas did wonders for the signal going east too. Are those still up?

Hiya Boys...

Yep, Frank....still up as of my last visit before Christmas.

WNYG is a sickness that we can't seem to get out of our system.

FM on an AM?

> Yep, Frank....still up as of my last visit before Christmas.

Ah, the old FM elements from the WBAB days. While I was Officially employed there in the early 00's the FM antenna was grounded out, but due to the fact that the insulators are getting old, on rainy days the FM bays would arc to the hot AM tower thus activating the foldback circuit in the transmitter. The Transmitter would go on and off and on and off. We had to lower the output power to about 300 watts and the modulation to about 60% to keep it in check during inclement weather.

I remember the GM at the time pressuring the engineer at the time "What are you going to do to fix it!" The engineer's reply was "We get big giant condom and put over top of tower!" That is one of my favorite all time memories of working in radio. Not neccesarily because of what was said, but because of WHO said it, and Who he said it to; and the facial expressions that came immediately afterword.

I believe the engineer ended the problem by disconnecting the ground strap of the FM antenna and connecting the FM's ground to the Hot part of the Tower. I don't know if the current group in there has changed it or not, but if not, then the FM elements are still live with RF! Just not the RF intended to be radiated from it.

Re: WNYG-FM

There were a few times where, back in 1993, we alligator-clipped a small Ramsey FM transmitter to the FM Co-ax, which, back then, was merely hanging down from the ceiling in the transmitter room. We had the transmitter tuned to 87.9, so grant it, the elements weren't exactly tuned to the proper frequency, but we did indeed get out for just under a mile or so.

I know we did it one afternoon while Ed Newlands was on the air, and then I did it again one Saturday night during Harry Hepcats Saturday show.

Ironically enough, on the Saturday Night after AM Power-Down, I think the FM signal might have been going furthur than the AM! HEhehe.

Thanks for the memories. :D<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Ordway1440 on 01/15/06 05:12 PM.</FONT></P>

Re: WNYG-FM

I remember being there during a thunderstorm when the transmitter got struck by lightning and we were almost killed. Then, lightning blew the transformer out on the pole on 109 and we were left in the dark all night.

In the morning, the PD called screaming and yelling about phone etiquette.

Warm memories.

Yessir, Mikey, I probably owe my life to you, since I was on the air and not giving a damn about the tons of lightning outside. Finally, after you demanding that I sign off, we shut down, and went into the lobby. 1 minute later..............BOOM!!!!!!! I never heard so much buzzing from a piece of electrical equipment in my life. We were off the air for about 17 hours.

Quiet and black all night.......Rabbit, Duck, Cart. One of the weirdest nights of my life.

Since we're on the subject of memories.....how about the time when we patched the production studio on air and ran a VCR with 4 hrs of segued music so we could use the air studio (with slightly better equipment) to record a mock CBS-FM aircheck with Big Ed Newlands. And then we ended up tearing the console apart in the air studio to try to get things to work properly.

Warm but Fuzzy Memories..........<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Ordway1440 on 01/15/06 07:01 PM.</FONT></P>

Re: WNYG memories (a classic thread hijack)

Remember, we're going to do whatever we want without any concern at all.

How is life behind the dessert tray?

And what wouldn't we do, to go back and do it all over again.

Geez, ain't that the truth.

It's a Monday afternoon in December of 2005, and here I am doing traffic reports while Mike fills in for Jim in the PM under general manager Phyllis.

Only the positions have changed. The names have remained the same.

I was just leaning against the back window, looking out at the parking lot, and it was a view from ten-plus years ago. If only I could turn around and see the main control board, a ton of old beat up records, smoky, nicotine-drenched shag carpet on the walls, and one of us sitting at the mic. But, it's not to be. I turn around and see a nicely painted white production room. To my right, the transmitter, and through the right window, ANOTHER radio station. In the ex-news room, I see an air studio.

Strangely, the bathroom hasn't changed. It's still got that NYG-restroom odor!

Damn, I miss that place.

There was a weekend back in 93 or 94, IIRC, when myself, Tom Ross, and Jim Pierce camped out at the place from Friday Evening until Sunday Evening due to a blizzard. Ya know something? I would give anything to do that again. You haven't eaten until you've had a hot ham sandwich that was made by Jim Pierce using nothing more than a coffee maker.

I remember another Sunday night with Jim, myself, Mike, and Ed hanging out spinning records during the off-time of the paid-programming. The DJ-duel between Ed, Jim, and Rev. Porter was never to be equaled!

There will NEVER be another place like it. Was it an insane asylum? Hell yeah. But at least the inmates were running it.

I wonder if those Cub Scouts remember the time when they were almost run down by Ed & Mike after screaming into the parking lot from a record-buying spree in Huntington?

Good times......Good times.......

(Oh, BTW, Mike....I haven't seen the desert cart in two weeks, and it's pissing me off! Maybe Alberto will bring me some chicken when he comes in for his show!)

So, whos up for putting some cash together and making it a real radio station again? Lets add another stick, turn it into a directional, and apply for a major mod and get some more power into that 'biotch to get out east and a lil more west....I've probabl spent the least time in that place then all of you, but it was a fun place to just hang out and shoot the s*it who enjoy doing real radio..

Nah.....let's leave the pay-to-play to W(ex)GSM.

Unless, Matt, you're thinking of hitting some lotto and sinking a cool mil or two into the place.....then we'll talk. Set me up with an ISDN to do a show from up here in the Capital Region, and I'm there.

Ive often said that you shouldnt be allowed anywhere on the air on Long Island, until you pull a shift at WNYG, it has that knd of effect on you.
Arthur Liu wants millions for the place, and its simply not worth it, you could never make back the loan, pay your people, the station bills, and its too bad because that place still has some life left in it. Im glad that the current set up has lasted, hats off to you guys for keeping that old flame alive! What ever happened to Tom Flyntz??? And that crazy but HOT salesgirl Desiree?

>>(718 is Brooklyn right?)<<

The 718 area code includes Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx.

Tom was a cool guy. I believe Dennis Daniel sent him over from WBAB where he interned. I never got to see him perform with the band he was in. Now as for Desiree, I remember dancing with her to "I love you" by the Climax Blues Band at a Halloween party the station threw in 1993 at some dive by the railroad tracks that no one showed up to except the station staff. The owner of that place was really happy that night. After a few free drinks, (D.J drinks for free) I was feeling mighty happy that night too : )

Come on Chip, If I hit the lotto, the 1st thing I would do is buy a radio station that I can at least hear here in beautiful South Jersey!...Hell, at nite, you can't even pick that station up on South Wellwood Ave!

HAha.....Well, to be perfectly honest, the place USED to have a decent signal. I can remember back around 88-89, when the oldies format was really rocking along with listeners and advertisers, we would often get calls from Queens during the daylight hours. I've been told it used to barely shoot across the water to the Jersey Shore, but I have no facts to confirm this.

Back during "NYG 2000", there was a CONFIRMED report that at 1,000 watts at night (illeagal, but that's besides the point), we were being heard under a mass of other stations in Frackville, Pennsylvania, which is about 150 miles due west of 404 Route 109...give or take a couple of feet. Obviously, it was far from listenable, but it was indeed THERE. The signal was not bad when the equipment was maintained properly. After awhile, I think John Blake was just taking a pay check to sign his name on the logs, and who can blame him?

When I used to drive home at night to Melville, Pinelawn Road was my route of choice. The 38-watt giant would start to fade at the north end of the cemetaries.

To comment on one of the other posts, Deserie was indeed missing a few cards from her deck.

Who (ex-employees) remembers the Deer Park Ave. Drag Races on Friday Afternoons? (You ALL know what I mean!!!!!) LOL!

Be sure to click on the following links to see some various WNYG stuff:

http://WWW.GEOCITIES.COM/GREENWICHLIRR -- My personal site with some various rememberences, pics, and sound files from the 'NYG Archives. If you can forgive the scattered typos and the fact that I haven't updated it in about 8 months, it's pretty cool. The only problem is, since it's a Geocities site, that it will shut down due to "bandwidth issues" after numerous people visit and download any sounds. Consider it a typical WNYG payday.
