740 WNYH Changes....

Rob Jontay has left WNYH----Quoting him....."citing severe communication issues, and an egotisical wanna-be program director who knows nothing about radio, that was The Good Doctor." Seems there was no way to run the station with Dr. Yoon the present Doctor / owner dabbling in his new hobby.....
There was no access to the transmitter automation system by the "staff or management" which meant no way to make the station sound professional. The format became too all over the road, he states. Giving up the ghost, he says "the station is basically one-hour CD shows (jocks picked the music) and the Dr.'s brother sits at the Tx site and dubs them in." As Rob and Tom Pantaleo (Steve Ronson) tried to assist the owner to make the station sound better, less and less communication or even control was given to them. They eventually have been pulled off the "air" by the Doctor who obviously is on a power trip. Rob couldn't communicate in English anymore with the Doctor so he wrote a letter in Korean and told the Dr. to "call me when you want to make a splash in the market. Call me when you want to put a dent in those other stations ratings. In other words when you're as serious about this product (oldies and country radio) as I am." He didn't receive any response from the doctor, so it's over. He was unofficially the first station manager and morning host----"at least that's what the diner napkin contract said on it!" he said.
Good luck---we'll see what happens to the other two "CD voice-jocks" left, Tom / Steve and Ron Dipaolis. Rob says look for "a major announcement soon."

Announcement from "Rob" or from The Radio Station?
Is Rob going to come on the board here with a personal
announcement? Lets see if this Yoon fellow shows up
here to tell us what is going on from his prespective.
It would be nice to hear from the horses mouth.
(as opposed to hearing only from the other end.)

Are they off the air? I couldn't pick them up Tuesday afternoon. I live in Central Connecticut. Normally on my SuperRadio I'd get 770 WABC NYC, 760 WVNE Leomimster, MA, 740 WNYH Huntington, LI, 730 WACE Chicopee, MA, and then 710 WOR NYC. Tuesday I went straight from WVNE 760 to WACE 730.

When is there license up for renewal? There needs to be some public comment to get this license revoked for not acting in the public interest.

Oh good lord.....this is absurd. I have an aircheck of Rob from about a month or so ago, and he was PRAISING the fact that they were playing anything ranging from vintage country to oldies to Harry James. Between the music and the non-stop "Windows XP" sounds that were being broadcast, his constant hawking of the phone number with the promise that YOU could do your own show made him come across as more of a snake-oil salesman than a disc jockey.

And I STILL want someone to explain how they, as Rob put it in a message on the NYRMB, how they got 800 calls in an hour. Yours truly and Sir Mike did the math, and it came out to something like 3-4 secs per call non stop. They must have had some operator.

And where was Rob "quoted", dare I ask? Where was this "scoop" published?

Am I the only one that knew this was a cluster---- from the start? It almost should have remained dark.

Oh gawd, filing just cuse the doctor is playing what he wants and taking money from people who wanna be on the air? The FCC is really going to give a rats ass unless all of long island, sw ct and poarts of NY and NJ file.. good luck.

The FCC has lots of better thigs to worry about.....

by the way, i searched the WNYH applications and couldn't find an email for the owner, just his lawyer. interestingly enough, if you google the number for the Good Dr and mis type it, you'll get a Deli somewhere in the area.

oh yeah, he's a urologist!

True, The FCC doesn't regulate programming. As long as the programming stays within the Broadcast Decency guidelines they are untouchable.

The FCC probably don't care about OverModulation either, as most of the other stations in the area are likely guilty of this as well (More evident on FM), albeit not as obviously and blatantly noticable as the OverModulation on WNYH. 740 is noticably louder than the rest of the stations, so much so that most radios exhibit a crackling or noise as the lower carrier pinches off past -100%.

The things the FCC does seem to be obsessed with are Directional pattern parameters and EAS regulations. Hopefully for their sake WNYH has working EAS equipment and has kept good records of their EAS activity. It wouldn't hurt for them to have a good public file either.

Where WNYH really needs to be concerned is their radiation pattern. Back when WGSM had been operating at 25kW there was a harsh null that extended SouthWest passing through the Plainview area and down through to the Seaford area. When K-Radio activated their Construction Permit to drop to 20kW and open up the pattern a little bit for slight improvement in Queens, they also made the southwest null much less harsh sounding. The problem is that the Construction Permit for the 20kW pattern must have expired, because it is no longer listed in any of the FCC databases, and the coverage maps have been eliminated from sites like Radio-locator.com. The same 20 kW pattern is on record, but only again as an application. What this means is that WNYH should be operating their old 25kW pattern, not the new pattern. One would think that reverting back to the old pattern would have brought back that very harsh sounding null, however that null does not seem to be present. Having an improperly adjusted pattern is a big no-no in the eyes of the FCC. They are constantly showing up to check on the NYC stations to make sure their patterns are compliant, and they come around here on LI often enough. If I were the Chief Engineer at WNYH I would be out taking point readings and making sure my pattern was propperly adjusted to the licensed parameters. I don't know that they aren't out of compliance, but just based on their ability to be heard by people in certain places where you previously couldn't hear them, and the fact that the null hadn't returned certainly raises an eyebrow. I don't think it will get their license revoked, but it could certainly cost them lots of money in fines. Sounds like owning a high power highly directional AM Station is a very expensive hobby.

Hey Rob and/or radiogoogoo: [Can one of or both of you perhaps hint]

There are rumors and rumblings that Air America may potentially be losing its home at WLIB AM 1190. Is it possible that they may be negotiating to be carried on WNYH? Hey, it was good enough for Radio Disney until they were able to find something better. The entity that reported the eviction of Air America from WLIB suggests that they might move to WSNR AM 620, but that station has a "Limited signal" covering only Manhattan. If Air America does get removed from WLIB, they could move to WSNR 620 to cover North Jersey and Manhattan, and also to WNYH to cover LI and Queens and parts of Brooklyn & The Bronx. It would also give them some serious coverage into Connecticut, At least during the day anyhow.

How DARE you, Russ! Would you ask Clark Kent to show you his Superman Cape?!?!?!?!?! His secret identity must NOT be revealed, even if he IS writing ridiculous "press releases" about himself while speaking in the "third person"

Now, excuse me....Chip has to go.
Edited by Ordway1440 on 03/06/06 12:20 PM.

It's virtually impossible to make a dent in an environment that is soliciting brokered programming. Whatever was programmed, you knew once the snake-oil salesmen and religious nuts got hold of it, all bets were off.

This is 2006 Amplitude Modulation.
