770 am

Ever since I broke the 4,000 mile mark with my catch of WLW here, my next goal has been to hear WABC.

The longer I listen to 780 here, the more I hear WBBM try to battle it out with the much closer KKOH, so I figured it wasn't a real stretch to think WABC could do the same with KKOB.

770 here at night is always a fairly good KKOB but sometimes there's another station in the background that tries to battle with KKOB.

So I know there's the station in Calgary CHQR that's 50 kw but look at their signal pattern.

Of course, there's KTTH in Seattle and here's their pattern.

And I didn't even realize there's also a station in Manteca, California. KCBC. According to their signal pattern, I should be hearing them.

But they are a religious station and I know whatever I'm hearing is not religious. That's weird.

So I found out that both KKOB and WABC carry the show Red Eye Radio at the same time and after checking, none of the above mentioned other stations carry it.

It's hard to say for absolute sure, but when the mystery station behind KKOB comes in and is at it's strongest, it sounds like the same Red Eye Radio guys.

While I would expect to hear an echo effect if it's the same show at the same time, as I've heard with other stations on the same frequency broadcasting the same show, that's not what I hear.

I'm wondering if maybe there is a significant delay between the two stations broadcasting the same show? Or is it just wishful thinking?

According to the 77 Musicradio site, they've been heard in Hawaii.

I'd appreciate any input on this as to what I may be hearing.

I'll bet that you're hearing WABC behind KKOB. No other station on 770kHz has enough power (in your direction) to produce a good skywave.

I hope you're right.

But I would expect to be able to hear KCBC from Northern California.

KSFO sends their power this way too at night and I can hear them. But KSFO is also right near the water. Don't know if that makes any difference when it comes to nighttime reception.

WABC made it into Daytona Beach Shores in the daytime easily - it had to be the ground conductivity at the transmit and receive site. If it has been heard in Hawaii before, chances are good it still can bounce in there occasionally. KKOB is a pest here in Texas, but WABC used to be easy from Houston - if you could null KKOB (then KOB). Not a trace of WABC these days, and the new 770s including the one in Dallas are an issue. I wonder if they are still fooling around with HD - that is a real power vampire. That would definitely limit their range and make Hawaii more difficult.

When I was in Hawaii about 6 years ago I heard the Seattle station in back of KKOB a couple of times, but it was weak. I never heard WABC when I was there, but here's hoping you do.

Back in the old network days, you would hear the echo, on adjacents such as WNBC 660 and WMAQ 670, and WCCO 830 and WHAS 840. They were very closely locked in the echo. Now, it seems like there can be several seconds of delay due to hour clock timing of spots and programming. The top of the hour newscasts are often a few seconds off on many stations.

I just checked 770 tonight and it's all KCBC from the SF Bay Area.

Something is in the background very weak and I think it's KKOB.

First time I've heard this here.

But I still don't think it's the same station I usually hear sometimes trying to compete with KKOB.
