790 The Zone blasts 680 for airing "picks" show one week late

Twice in the span of two days, 790 The Zone's Steak Shapiro blasted rival 680 The Fan for airing a syndicated, national gambling show one week late for two consecutive weeks.

The program airs Saturday mornings on 680 and for the past two weeks the show that has aired has been a week behind, i.e., the games that are being talked about have already been played.

While some will say Shapiro is just blasting his rival station, I must say (and I listen to 680 and 790) that it seems someone would have realized the wrong tape was airing. How this could go on for two weeks is a mystery? The fact that not one listener called in to complain also says something about 680's listenership on Saturday mornings.

I think it says more that Shapiro is listening to 680 on saturday am then his own station! ;)

It's always smart to hear what the competition is doing although in this case they aren't doing much it seems.

If it happens consistently then the station must have delivery issues with the show or is running it late to satisfy advertisers. That does happen, even though it sounds awful.

A couple of things. Firstly, it sounds like a delivery problem. Since the show is undoubtedly a time buy, WCNN is going to run it in order to get the billing. No way Dickey passes up on paid programming even if no one is listening because the material is dated.

Second. The fact that Shapiro is railing about this shows that 790 must be slipping. A few years back the station had a policy of not mentioning 680 on the air. After all when you are in front, you don't give free publicity to the underdog. When you start railing about the competition you are in a tough fight or losing.

Even though the ratings are similar, I bet 790 outbills 680 3-to-2, if not double. Quality always wins and syndicated sports talk isnt quality.

I agree with zoneguy. I dont know why Steak would provide that vacuum with any buzz.

Does anyone get the fact that 680 airing something like this, a week late, is absurd.

It would be like a sports talk show host talking about the "upcoming" Vandy-UGA football game and how Georgia should be able to win this one.

There is no justification for 680 airing someone like a forecast show a week late after the games are played. A complete waste of airtime. Period. End of discussion. Surely they think more of their listeners than that.

Freebird, to bluntly answer your comments...if money is involved a show could air 3 MONTHS late if the station wanted the billing...and most of them do. Content or continuity be damned.

Steak does spend a lot of time worrying about what 680 is doing. Maybe he was listening because his station runs a computer show and a home fixit show and other left wing wacko talk shows instead of sports on the weekend mornings.
790 does clearly bill a lot more than 680, but it obviously does not affect the 680 listening audience which is much larger. 790 has a great loyal base of listeners. 680 seems to be much more listened to in numbers acoording to Arbitron. If I was Steak, why even bring it up? It makes no sense to give them the press. I think he is upset that he is no longer the big dog show at his own station.

Perhaps too, it is just eating Steak alive that after all these years, all the dollars spent, all the so-called big time talent he has paid for that the Zone and Fan are just about even in the ratings. Yes, 790 bills a lot more and despite having much higher overhead, it is probably the more profitable of the two operations, but Steak is all about Steak and the programming is his baby. He knows the whole world sees those 12 plus numbers and when it comes in WCNN 0.8 WQXI 0.7, it must absolutely destroy his humongous ego.

He brought this issue up because it is a disgrace for a sports talk station to air a show about predicting the outcome of football games a week after the games are played.

I guess I'm the only one who sees what a complete waste of airspace this is. Just to let everyone know, I think the Falcons are going to lose to the Saints when the two teams meet in the first game played in the Superdome since the Hurricane. You can bet lots on that. The Saints WILL win.

We all agree that the whole airing of the out of date gambling show is reprehensible. No one here is defending that. We just kind of got off topic by looking at a competitor railing about it on the air.

680 deserves to be blasted for doing this. Be it by Steak Shapiro or anyone else.

to me, whether it was mistake or not, it just sounds sloppy. I just find it funny that a station that runs home fix it shows when people are heading to college tailgates and the most stupid, ridiculous talk show ever heard on Sundays before NFL would take shots at anyone else! Especially when they have a significantly smaller listening audience overall.
Steak has slipped. He must be surrounding himself with people that constantly tell him that his show sounds great. It is obvious he has no clue.

They've been slipping for some time. I give them credit for trying just about everything to break the 1.0 share hump and become a bigger player in the male demos, but nothing has really taken hold. They tried to hitch their wagon to the Stews and moving them to the afternoons has brought the station revenue in terms of affiliates, but has damaged the overall Atlanta ratings.

I get the impression to see them back at a one share or worse and often running behind 680 has that whole bunch disheartened to the point where they think it just doesn't matter.

true enough. We all know why Shapiro was listening to 680 on weekend am's, and it's not to 'check out the competition'.

Even syndicated sports is leagues ahead of Ike's 'helicopter theories for dummies', '2 hicks in a pickup' fixit review, and 'golf news from restaurant owners'.

;)

from what I understand they have no choice but to air those shows. I don't know that to be true but it may take them off the hook for it. I don't think that Steak has ever gotten past being removed from afternoon drive myself. He is a guy with great energy, but the teaming in the morning has grown stale. Chris Rude and his crew have beaten them out and that should make Steak nervous. I have never heard a station brag so much about their billing. I had a sales rep from the station recently touting this to me. I asked them to produce the demographics for afternoon drive, with outside the perimeter males from 25-54. I got a bunch of hemming and hawwing and got the numbers from another stations reps for comparison. It seems like the Stews move may have been good for the urban demo, but it has secured Buck and Kincaid in the afternoons with almost all the critical male demo outside the perimeter. It must really kill Steak to have to play second fiddle to the Stews, who I think do an interesting show. It just does not suit my clients that I want to reach with my advertising dollars.

They can toss the whole lot of the weekend programming off the air at anytime. If they wanted to, they could remove 'Ike and the Moonbats' and move the 'paid golf and fixit shows' to the early sunday am slot, and put some prerecorded 'community service' show on at 3 am to fulfill thier FCC regs. They could them hand over the airwaves on saturday am to some low level 'talent', Like Brandon Leak & Shaggy for a 'college football tailgating show', and bump up thier own NFL coverage on sundays.

Hell, even Dickie gives a couple hours of airtime away on 1230 for Ron Tribbles 'Swim or Die' and the 'Frank and Joe Show' on sanday a.m.

Sounds like the 'Stews' rising tide is only affecting the ITP crowd. That comes as a surprise for me ;)

It is true that Ike's show and the Home Repair thing are part of their lease deal. Those are the only hours that are not part of BLB's time buy from what I've been told.
