7K fine for WPRX 1120 AM

In today's edition of Radio-Info's Tom Taylor Newsletter he mentions that WPRX 1120 AM in Bristol has been fine $7,000 for failure to renew its license. The station should've filed for a license renewal back in December 2005 and didn't and the FCC didn't catch it til 5 years later. And yes they were allowed to renew their license.

Gee between the $7,000 FCC fine, the $42,000 in taxes they had to pay to the city of Bristol for their Tower Site on Sherbrooke Street, and the increase in taxes from the city of New Britain (where their studios are), it's turning out to be a bad year for WPRX. Maybe Sr. Nieves ought to sell the place. Believe it or not 18 years later there are still people in Bristol who wish the station would be sold and go back to local community programming.

But the station does pretty much all local programming. It's just not in English. What's the Spanish-speaking population like in Bristol?

The Hispanic population in Bristol went up slightly in the new census, but it's still not as high as it is in New Britain. WPRX claims in many newspaper articles about the station that they're the only Puerto Rican owned radio station in the country.

Anyway no one listens to WPRX. They don't show up in the PPM ratings nor did they show up in the ratings when Hartford was using the diary method. The other 3 Tropical formatted stations - MEGA 910 WLAT, La Gigante 840 WRYM (which on Sundays is mostly Polish and a little bit of Italian), and Bomba 97.1 (listed in the ratings as WMRQ HD2) all show up in the PPMs. Spanish Variety WNEZ 1230 also shows up in the PPMS.

They don't have a PPM encoder.

And what are those other two towers for exactly?

You must be new around here. ;D

AM stations that use more than one tower, do so in order to make their signals directional. The main reason is to reduce interference to other stations on the same channel.
