88.5 WVCP

Yes, they are off. The reason, I don't know why. I would call the station's GM at home, but I don't want to bother him tonight about it. They may be having transmitter/antenna problems. Their transmitter site is a couple of blocks from my AM station.

Oh ok I was just wondering as a dxer I noticed a couple other stations on there during my flipping but I figured the weather was too chilly for good tropo.

We've been having some problems with the antena at WVCP. We've had it back up and running, but it happened again about a week ago. Hope to have it fixed very soon

Thanks,

Robert

Disc Jockey 88.5 WVCP, Gallatin

Again, eh. I feel for the folks there. I remember this being the fourth time the station has been off in a decade.

Good to hear from Robert. I listen to 88.5 so much, I know him, Joe Mac, Travis (who is SO polite: "Thank you for listening"). If I programmed an Oldies/Classic Hits station, it would be very close to 88.5. The only difference, and I heard these back-to-back: I would play the album version (instead of the single) on songs like "Crimson and Clover" and "Lyin' Eyes". Anything that wasn't 8 minutes long!

I sure hope you guys restore full power soon!

I'm the reason why WVCP is Oldies. When my station, WMRO, Magic 1560, changed format from 60's/70's Oldies Pop to Hot AC, I told G.M. Howard Espravnik, hey, there is a hole in the market! WRQQ, 97.1 has gone to some strange rock format. If you take on Oldies and take my former audience, I can play my Hot AC format and have fun with Magic. I was sick of our Oldies format and ready for change. The rest is history.

At least there is an Oldies station on the FM dial and can be heard very well in the northern part of the metro. WVCP cannot get a power increase because of WAYM-FM on 88.7. WVCP is on that a nice tower up the street from me, and the station has better equipment than my little AM. As I've said, FM is the future!

Now, I'm waiting on my 20 watt FM Translator for my AM. As long as I cover at least half of Gallatin with 20 watts on a FM Translator, I'm happy.

This should make you feel good then about the possible coverage of your 20 watt translator. I can get the 10 watt translator on 105.5. Its in Lebanon and I'm in Springfield.

About 20+ years ago, a buddy of mine, Gary Davis and I were both working at 92Q and WVOL when they were sister stations. When we got off the air, we went to his apartment, close to where Opry Mills is now. Gary built a 5 watt FM Transmitter and I helped finish it up, we had used a small ground plane antenna out on the patio deck. We put on a Rolling Stones CD and drove towards Murfreesboro. We got to Smyrna, the signal was still good. So, we turned around to come back. Gary was afraid someone would turn him in; we got back and turned it off.

That will tell you what 5 watts will do on FM!

I am a regular listener to WVCP. So, I very much miss them when they are off. What I love about this station is their play-list is so wide. I will hear something I have not heard in 30 years and will go online and buy it that night.

I used to listen to 97.1 when Coyote and Cathy were on in the morning. Since they changed their programming I quit listening. Now I get my oldies fix from WVCP.

For those of us on the south and west sides of town, we listen to WKOM. Playlist variety may not be that wide, but I'll take it. It's the best that we've got.

I can pick up WVCP from Centennial Park, but that's about it.

I like WKOM as well. Wish I could get them better though. WVCP is my favorite though. They just have such a big playlist.

I listened to an Oldies Station while passing through Louisville and it was programmed like stations of the 60's and 70's. The Jingles reminded me of radio during that time. I can't remember what the call sign is.

My guess is that is was WAKY at 103.5. They use a lot of jingles (and re-mixes) from the glory days of the old WAKY 790.
The WAKY-WKLO battles were fun...I 'grew up' in Louisville during the best years of the battles.

You are correct. I found it to be a very enjoyable, unique radio station.

Thanks D Dean. We're still on low power. The new part has been ordered but we still don't know when it's coming in. Today was my last show there, so I'm upset about that. You mention Travis, and Joe Mac, well you also have some of the nicest folks I've ever met, Uncle Pepe, DJ Tim, and Justin, Vixen, Tom Depp, Phil Tucker, and others. I love that station so much, and it's gonna be hard to leave and go to MTSU. If you've listened to me, I was the country dj there, but it opened my eyes to great oldies. Jay and the Americans, Hollies, Eagles, Roy Head, CCR, they just don't make em' like they used to. Boss man has a lot on his shoulders, Holly Nimmo was our Operations Supervisor, well someone who doesn't know jack **** about radio decided that that position could be cut and made part time, THANK YOU SO MUCH WHOEVER DID THAT YOU JACK***!!! You have people who don't know **** about radio trying to call the shots, hell, cut some of those damn public affairs programs we have to have.

You have people who don't know **** about radio trying to call the shots,...don't know if your going to pursue a career in radio at MTSU..but if so..get used to your own quote...best of luck...God speed winged warrior..

Hold it, Hold it, Hold it! I have not been really been keeping up too much with this thread, but I know the station has a Harris Transmitter. Harris has laid off quite a few people in Quincy, IL, and is getting out of the radio manufacturing business and and doing more TV Transmittter manufcacturing. Vol State works q

MY FIRST POST CUT ME OFF:

Hold it, Hold it, Hold it! I have not been really been keeping up too much with this thread, but I know the station has a Harris Transmitter. Harris has laid off quite a few people in Quincy, IL, and is getting out of the radio manufacturing business and doing more TV Transmitter manufacturing. Vol State works differently than the typical "college" radio station. It is control by the state board of regents, under the Department of Education. The state is cutting jobs and I have feared for Howard Espravnik's job as well.

When the part gets in, James Milliner, the CE, will put it in and have it back up to full steam. I thought that the college kept its 1 KW Harris Backup, Model 1K, but I bet now that ole rig is hard to get parts for. This has been a typical thing to happen to WVCP over the years that I have been affiliated with the station. All of you just need to calm down. It's nobody’s fault. This has happen in the past, back when Skip Sparkman, then David Beech, was GM over WVCP.

Gary Brown, who was just Chief Engineer over WMOT & WMTS at MTSU, has now been promoted to General Manager. The state is making cuts in education.

The State of Tennessee raises our taxes and tells the public it's for education, but that's a big fat lie, and the public knows it. It's a big fat raise for someone in the state legislature.

At least the station is back on albeit at low power. Is the back-up still at the campus? That's where they were transmitting from the last time before they got the CEMC tower placement.
