Isn't it illegal for two separate stations in different areas to have the exact same set of call letters? Or better yet, isn't it also illegal for a company to hold both a commercial and non-commercial license within a particular cluster?

Same Call Letters, Different Cities, Different Owners:
Clear Channel's WMAX 97.3 FM in Chattanooga and Ave Maria Radio's WMAX 1440 AM in Bay City, Michigan.

Same Call Letters, Different Cities, Same Owners:
Clear Channel's WWVA 1170 in Wheeling, WV, and WWVA 105.7 in Canton, GA.

Same Call Letters, Same City, Different Owners:
Cox Radio's WALR 104.7 Atlanta-Athens and Dickey Broadcasting WALR 1340 in Atlanta.

I do not believe it is against the law to hold both a commericial and noncommercial licenses as in WKEU 1450 in Griffin and 88.9 in The Rock.

No it is not illegal for a person to own a commerical and a non commerical station. Steve Gradick owns both WKNG-AM and WKNG-FM (he also owns WBTR,WCKS and WLBB in carrollton). The reason for the same call letters is the fact that it gives more call letters. Think..there would be very few stations if there were only one set of call letters for both AM and FM. Gradick also own WCKS 810 AM and WCKS 102.7 FM

My mistake. It was 91.7 Heflin that was playing oldies.

Is this the son of Les? My dad worked for Les
in the early sixties in Rockmart & Rome.

Thank you.

Just an added note: Technically, the station that has the calls first gets just the call. The station on the other band has to add AM or FM.

Example:

WSB, Atlanta, 750 AM
WSB-FM, Atlanta, 98.5 FM

The calls are listed in the FCC data base like that. The legal ID at the top of the hour is supposed to include the AM/FM extension if needed. However, in practice it does not happen at some stations.

Wrong.

There is no such thing as a -AM extension. The FM station always adds -FM to their calls.

As for WKNG-FM it's a pretty nice little oldies non-comm that's a welcome addition to the dial in NE Alabama. I didn't know it was co-owned with WCKS AM & FM. Those are both great stations as well.
