I never even noticed that 89.1 existed until this news story. Should the tower changes improve reception?
Radio-Locator is witholding their coverage maps, old and new, untill things are completed, but assuming the changes in power and height approximately offset each other, the difference will be that station is being moved a ½ dozen miles to the northwest. It took a while (more like 45 seconds) because they were referring to themselves only as 89.1.

There was great tropo from the north last night; I was in n.e. Hernando county and nearly all the Orlando and Tampa stations had interference; 99.5 WQYK was completely over-riden by a country station in south Georgia (the only i.d. I heard and they did not have any RDS).
On 89.9, which in n.e. Hernando is usually the Jacksonville NPR station at night and in the early morning hours (even though they is a closer but lowered powered 89.9 in Orlando), but the Jax NPR station was nowhere to be found, the RDS indicated it was WFSU, Tallahassee.
90.5 WBVM was also over-run by another religious station out of either Valdosta or the Brunswick area.
As far as WSMR goes, I am beginning to think if these problems aren't resolved by the end of this month, WUSF may back out of the deal.

When I listen to WVUM, Miami, form Fort Lauderdale, tropos will always bring in the main Reach FM station from near Lake Okeechobee.drt said:

WUSF shoulda bought Max 98.3. They coulda called it "Maximum Classical" with Max Headroom doing voice overs . Maybe they could do remotes with Bethany Gagle from Jiffy Lube Steaks and call it "Classical Gas" . Mason Williams could do AM drive so there would be two Mason's playing Classic Hits. Marelous could get on board too with the "Powdered Wig Buffet'. Since Tesh has no outlet in Tampa, his format works very well with intelligent music for your life.
As I post this (around 1:50pm) I have noticed that WSRZ 107.9 is either off the air or has greatly reduced power; normally I can pick them up clearly and there's not a trace of them. Also their online stream is unavailable now and nothing on their website gives any clues as to what is going on. (much like WUSF's website!).
I'm wondering that since 89.1 will be on the same mast, if 107.9 is off the air now to try to narrow down what the problem is?
Today's St. Pete Times has an article which does not shed much more light on what is really going on, other than Judy U..... at WUSF has mentioned receiving nearly 2000 emails about this delay in putting WSMR on the air.

You can have my classical music when you pry the dial from my cold, dead fingers...

Some people you don't want angry with you: PTA moms. NRA enthusiasts. Animal rights activists.
And those passionate about their music.
In this case, we're talking fans of classical music. They may seem a genteel lot, but you do not want to deny them their Mozart or Mahler.
JoAnn Urofsky does not say things like this. As the woman who runs radio station WUSF-FM 89.7, she has spent the last month saying infinitely gentler things, such as: "We made a promise," one they intend to keep, if only everyone would just be patient.
The transition Sept. 15th was supposed to be seamless. WUSF would switch to news and public affairs, with jazz at night, utter bliss for news junkies and those devoted to Fresh Air or the BBC. A new all-classical station - admittedly, one that broadcasts further south than some WUSF listeners - would go on the air.
But what actually happened was like watching a sweet performance by a string quartet when somebody suddenly lobs a tomato.
"There's nothing worse," Urofksy says, "than letting people down in this kind of way."
The signal for the new classical station, WSMR-FM, turned out to interfere with a user of the same radio tower, one with emergency response services. What everyone hoped would be a delay of mere days has now stretched into a month.
It's too soon to say whether all-news enthusiasts will balance out longtime listeners who might cut ties over the classical gaffe.
"As classical fans, all we can do is withhold our contributions to a station that has callously abandoned us," a letter-writer rather elegantly put it.
Since the switch that wasn't, some 2,000 calls and e-mails have poured in, many very unhappy in tone.

Also I have noticed that 107.9 is back on the air, but at a greatly reduced power. (Those in Venice, Laurel and Nokomis may not notice the difference).
Normally, they not only come in stereo here, but with the full RDS display; the signal is so weak now from my location near the bayfront, near downtown St. Pete, that the stereo light is not triggered and of course, no RDS display.

I think it could be innovative and exciting. Get some air staff, put up billboards, run TV spots, get catchy calls like WWCT----Classical Tampa Bay and promote it as the "new doctor's office station for patients who think". It could be run in tandem with the new Adult Standards station that some truly creative owner will bring to the AM dial.
