89.3 In Hazlet - Now WFJS

Looks like 89.3 in Hazlet quietly changed formats last week and nobody noticed ...
On 9/1, calls changed to WFJS (from WDDM) and on 9/2 switched to a religious format via EWTN ...
The new station already has a website (893fm.org), complete with a stream ...
However, 89.3's previous incarnation, "Dhoom FM" still has their site up (DhoomFM.org) and still has a stream up as well - not sure where that's coming from now, though ...

Amazing than an 8 watt station in Hazlet, NJ is promoting itself as "New York and New Jersey".

Here's the station's LEGAL coverage, direct from the FCC...

Hopefully the new owners will operate 89.3 at a LEGAL power and modulation level. I will not hesitate to say that the "Dhoom FM" folks constantly operated 89.3 WCNJ/WDDM at a higher-than-authorized RF power and audio modulation level in an attempt to provide better coverage of the Edison/Iselin/South Plainfield area in which central NJ's large community of South Asians is situated. During those times, I could get a clear signal from 89.3 as far north as the Livingston Mall in Essex County!

I won't comment on whether or not WDDM was operating above authorized levels, however I do find it odd that the new operators are promoting WFJS as being available in Somerset County.

I wonder how this affects the upcoming 100.7 translator in Edison.

And how, pre-tel, according to the WFJS website does this station serve "Somerset County." As Jersey Shore pointed out, if 89.3 was operating at the legal level, the signal contour would miss the boundaries of Somerset County by 30+ miles. Then again, a few months ago, I was able to pick up WDDM in New Egypt, and well into Burlington County before it faded away.

Speaking of 89.3 did Ed Beck own the station? Seems the station changed format pretty quickly after Ed passed away. I think 89.3 holds the record for formats in Monmouth County.

Either the signal of 89.3 carries amazing distances or the owners have been pretty lucky that the FCC doesn't seem to really enforce anything anymore. (Look at all of the pirate stations operating in NYC).

WEll I noticed the new calls are the initials of the Present Owner
JS jaspal Suri
you figure out what the WF stand for.
I think its a joke by the FCC

We Fined Jaspal Suri

Or his joke on the FCC

Why Fine Jaspal Suri

Either case.
The station was not Sold I believe its an LMA with the option to buy
and for the record. As the old CE of the station Pre-Febuary 2002. and I am
one of many whom has made claims that the station started running more power than It should after I left the CE Post. The Stations licensed power is 8 watts ERP at 38 meters.
It had an STA for 9 watts ERP at 99 meters. I believe that STA has expired and then they filed and were granted a CP to move the station.
Using an RF Program I have along with field measurments.
I Figured they were Running 10.85 Watts ERP
I can safely state that I know as a fact the station is now running at its legal 8 Watts ERP. not sure if the antenna height is correct but its TPO is correct.

Depending on local terrain, 89.3 from Hazlet _is_ available in Somerset County. Here in Warren Twp. it is full-quieting on my car radio, GE Superadio III, and on many of my better FM receivers. (The more important thing is selectivity because it's jammed between neighboring stations on 89.1 and 89.5 -- as long as your radio is selective enough to pick up stations on adjacent channels, then you'll hear 89.3 here.)

I also notice that 89.3 is transmitting pure mono now (no pilot tone). During the Indian format they were transmitting overmodulated mono with the FM Stereo pilot tone active (but serving no purpose since I have NEVER heard true stereo audio from them).

The stereo TX was hit by lightning and was destroyed. I'm the contract CE of the station. What you are hearing is a QEI 20 watt TX mono exciter operating with a TPO of 15 watts feading the circular polerized antenna on the Telegraph Hill tower located behind the Garden State Art Center.
It's a Dell 2400 computer feading a 15 Khz radio line which no compression. Since the death of Ed Beck the Indians packed it in. The studio's are gone and the new LMA owners are building new studio's in Metuchen.

A couple of questions about the new WFJS.

Does the signal cover the Perth Amboy/South Amboy
area well? Their Web site says they cover parts of
Middlesex County.

Will the new studios in Metuchen be at the
diocese offices in that town? The studios
for another station are right in that area.
Will they be associated in any way?

Someone mentioned a translater in Edison. Will
the new operators of WFJS be using a translator
in that town?

Thanks. It's nice to see a station in that part
of the state with a solid, mainstream format. I'm
sure a lot of people will enjoy it.

It's going to sound alot better once I install processing and compression.
Yes it serves PA @ SA.. It will stay mono for now since it's mostly voice.

There's a possiblity it will be in Edison on 100.7 from Talmadge road by the Pines with TPO of 30 watts/ WTTM is 1680 no longer in Metuchen, They are in new studio's which I just visited the other night on Rt 130 near Mercer County

It's time for us to all chip in and buy back WVRM/WCNJ/WDDM/WJFS whatever the hell it's gonna become tomorrow and bring back local radio. Ed's gone. He was the only voice to that indian station for so long and I'm sure it was a great outlet for them. It was also great when Ed was local. Let's face it. That frequency is cursed.. Bring it back to local. Try and get the FCC to reconsider the 104.7 freq. as it had in 1996 and 1997, or return 89.3 to a legit team of people devoted to restoring radio to what it had used to be...No one wants religious stuff, let alone anything similiar to EWTN... You've got Family Snooze 94.7 and Star 99.1 and 89.7/103.1 the Bridge.

Solid Gold CNJ or Music Power Non Stop Rock 89.3 sounded sooooo much better...

Did anyone catch the flip? I'm sure no one cared to listen lately.. I noticed religious the other day, but I thought WDDM was desperate for money, they were selling time to other organizations..

Re: 89.3 In Hazlet -Ed Beck

Ed either owned?(through his company named EBC Radio) or was the manager of WDDM/89.3. He was associated with the 89.3 frequency in Hazlet for many years, first in the mid-90s when it was WCNJ and then throughout the ethnic years. He took over as station manager of 89.3 in 1997 when his boss, Sal Anthony, left radio following the FCC's and ATF's raid on his pirate station in Howell, NJ.

I'm glad there are some people who understand why so many
people spent so much time to invent, develop, and refine
radio broadcasting: So it can be used as a 24-hour/7-day
a week wireless jukebox. Let's join together to prevent
pollution of the airwaves by educational, informational,
and inspirational programming.

Re: 89.3 In Hazlet -Ed Beck

Ed Never Owned any part Of EBC radio I do......
Ed was the Voice..Imaging of the sound of 89.3 WDDM.
without his imaging the station could not exist..
Ed did Voice over for for Me here at EBC radio also.
but thats about it he will be Missed.

Oops- look like I goofed. I just assumed that "EBC Radio" stood for "Ed Beck Communications" and was the licensee for 89.3. My apologies. Then again, is "EBC Communications" the licensee for 89.3? Do you know when the station's license passed from Sal Anthony/Steve Liadias to the current ownership? Was the sale forced upon Sal as an "unfit licensee" by the FCC after they raided his pirate operation in Howell?

I agree- Ed had a great imaging voice and from the sounds of it, he was a nice person. Too bad he passed away at a such a young age.

Lets bring back Country to New Jersey

Thats a great thought....
However If anyone is interested in LMA'ing a station
The Minimun that Ive Priced In the Tri-state area is about $40k a month
for a 1kw daytimer with a really crummy signal.
Heck I have all the stuff to do it in My Spare studio just no cash..
I Have Entire librays of CHR, Classic Rock, Oldies,Smooth Jazz,Country
with my country library with almost 1240 songs we could Bring back an Old WKMB Country format.
since I have the spare studio and full Automation
Im tempted to just make a website with different streams Of each format
except the Oldies.(only Because I Like the way WMTR sounds No compete They run a good Oldies format). also If I was To Find all the Voice Imaging for Oldies 102.3 that are Floating around. I would Love to Convert My Lpfm In Brick to Oldies 102.3 LOL...Boy that would Kill My partners at radio alerta that are currently On 102.3.. Maybe even For a few hours a week..
The thoughts running through my head... OY I have a headace..
