90s music on CHR

His music has been a staple on Los Angeles radio for years. KIISFM spins his music every now and then. I heard Dont Stop To You Get Enough, The Way You Make Me Feel, Thiller (normally during Halloween) Billie Jean and Beat It. Kinda reminds you of CHR radio back in the 90's and early 2000's when they would have a retro lunch show. KMXV in Kansas City use to have one. Them it phased into the 90's Power Lunch. Remeber Los Angeles is a hispanic market and they love MJ too.

Those are the only 80's songs KIISFM plays that I know. No Prince or Madonna. Most of those songs were gone from the playlist once their transition to Rhythnmic in 2005 began. The rest are 90's 2000's and current hits. No special shows those songs are in regular rotation during the day and night.

If you station airs Open House Party, you will get some 90s song during the 10pm central part of the show as they play the purple chamber of gold. Apparently the station gets a lot of requests for recurrents from way back.

107.5 WKZL/Greensboro plays No Doubt/Just A Girl, No Doubt/Don't Speak, No Doubt/Spiderwebs, Eve 6/Inside Out, Natalie Imbruglia/Torn, Green Day/When I Come Around, Sublime/What I Got, Pras Michel.../Ghetto Superstar, Sir Mix-A-Lot/Baby Got Back, Mariah Carey/Fantasy, 2PAC/Changes, Will Smith/Miami, Notorious B. I. G..../Mo Money Mo Problems, and even Salt 'N' Pepa/Push It and Rob Base.../It Takes Two (both from the late 80s I think)

There's no Hot AC in that market though

I'm not surprised KZL plays some 90s. They are almost like an Adult CHR - they still play "Daughters", "Fantasy", "Over My Head (Cable Car)", "Feel Good Inc.", and a lot of hits from the past 5 years that most CHRs have forgotten or play very rarely now.

I think 98.7 in GSO was a Hot AC station years ago then 94.1 and both failed miserably.

According to Mediabase, KIIS currently has 2 MJ tunes on the playlist: Beat It and P.Y.T. Its rather unusual for a CHR. In fact, they have an unusually large playlist (well over 200). Although I didn't see any other 80's songs in there, but did notice several 90's tunes. I suppose a station with yearly billing of 60 million must have a large research dept.

98.7 was actually a Modern AC back when I lived in North Carolina in the early 2000s (98.7 The Point until 2001 I think, and then 98.7 The Zone for a couple years) - their ratings were alright, but I think they saw more opportunity in Adult Hits, especially in a market which is so conservative

I remember "The Zone" until 2005? or so when I used to pass through there. I always hoped Greenville/Spartanburg would get a Hot/Modern AC since the market is quite similar to Greensboro/Winston Salem, but I doubt it will ever happen.

Looks like 107.5 KZL's Adult CHR lean does well for them, but WMKS is edging up on them, and they're pretty much CHR.

Puff Daddys Ill Be Missing You and a few crossover hits are in rotation on a few CHR stations. Another one is Mo Money More Problems. I also here No Doubts Dont Speak every now in then. I live in Los Angeles so KIIS and AMP will play a few 90's hits. Im still surprised that KIIS plays songs from the Late Selena Dreaming Of You and I Can Fall In Love.

No Doubt's Don't Speak will always be overplayed on KIIS-FM been like that since 1996-97

Rhythmic-leaning CHR WWKL/Harrisburg "Hot 92" plays one 90's gold track per hour. Played today, among others: DJ Kool - Let Me Clear My Throat, Max-A-Million - Sexual Healing, LL Cool J - Around The Way Girl, 2Pac - Changes. They also have a noon "old-school" hour that plays mostly 90's and early 2000's hip-hop and dance.

I honestly think there needs to be a new format centered around '90s and early '00s recurrents that isn't afraid to play songs that may be a little edgy, you know, the songs we actually listened to back then. AC and Hot AC won't touch a lot of the music from that era because it much of not appropriate for an "At-Work Station". Currently there are no stations playing much from that era except for the occasional spin of "California Love" which is a classic. Pop2K on XM does a very good job at this format, now throw in the second half of the '90s and you would have a solid AC format appealing to a generation aging beyond that of CHR's target audience.

There are a few "Gen X" stations sprinkled across the country. Here is a good example of one from Tulsa that plays a nice balance of pop, rock and rhythm:

It is mostly 90s based station, though I have them play anything from as old as Simple Minds "Don't You Forgot About Me" (1985) to as recent as Justin Timberlake "Sexyback" (2006).

I like Gen X radio except for when they spin Lady Gaga. Don't know if they still do but back in early 2010 they were playing "Bad Romance", which I thought did not belong on that station. I think more cities need these '90s based stations. Here in Charlotte we have 3 "At Work" AC stations. It would be nice if one of them would flip to a GenX radio or something similar.
