91.5 Can Advertise as a Non-Com

Since Rob owns WXOL and leases the signal, (they have studios on Hamilton rd) the old WDLR studio sits empty up in Delaware, and i think i read that when the were live that one time before christmas they had a 740 number which is the area code in Delaware.

You might be onto something here ........ lease the signal to some religious shysters and pocket the money they take from their dupes in the form of lease payments!

Works for Vern Baldwin. All he does is sit back and collect LMA checks from the K-Love people.

"...lease the signal to some religious shysters and pocket the money they take from their dupes in the form of lease payments!..."

Better some "religous shysters" than another rocker. Those people don't bathe and they're all in motorcycle gangs smokin' dope and stealin' money from old ladies to pay for their tattoos and tongue piercings.

Boy, painting with a broad brush sure makes you sound stupid, doesn't it?

If you're dumb enough to give them money, then be my guest. One station wasted with crap geared toward the uneducated or emotionally weak is more than enough in a city this size, let alone 4 or 5.

Yes, they are shysters!

You've got issues, DH. Be careful, though. Bigotry comes in many flavors, but it's still bigotry. Be careful of stereotypes. Not all rockers smoke dope. Not all country western fans drive pick 'em up trucks. Not all rappers are crack dealers. You've obviously had a bad experience or two... or ten. Sorry about that. Truth is, there are some good Christian broadcasters around who are trying hard to make a difference and do a lot of good. Not all Doctors are quacks. Not all lawyers are crooked. But, it's easy to get fixated on those who are, especially if you've had a bad experience with one. Don't get me wrong, what we have here locally isn't the best example. Far from it. But, it's really unfair to slap them all in the face because of the actions of a few. I wish you well, DH... and broader horizons to go with it.

Well, since this is a radio board, I suppose I should say something about radio. Hey, how 'bout that TED-FM thingy, huh?

Differences between Non-Commercial and Commercial Radio

Non -comms differ from commercial FM stations primarily in that they are not permitted to accept revenue in exchange for broadcasting "spots" (announcements advertising goods and services), yet they may charge for broadcasting programs. The licensee of a non-commercial educational FM station is expected to provide a broadcast schedule that is "non-commercial".

Presently, non-commercial educational stations may accept advertising for goods and services pro-vided by non-profit organizations. As well, they may receive underwriting and sponsorship spots from national and local businesses to pay for programming.

Examples of Non-Comm. Advertising:

"The following programming is sponsored by ...., home of the..., located at....."

"Funding provided by ..." "This hour of music was made available by The Univ. of ..., The Robert Jones Singers will be appearing in concert at the Univ. of .... on Sat. night, April 15 at 8 pm. Admission is $10. For reservations please call ...."

"We appreciate the contributions of ....." "The sponsor of our program offers additional helps by inviting you to attend ...."

"The Little Theatre downtown is putting on a series of two act plays featuring the work of Mary Beth Mather. For time and ticket info. please call ....."

"Our local Coca Cola Bottling Company sponsors this hour of programming and is also the host of this years THREE STATE/ THREE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE."

When choosing between a non-commercial channel or commercial channel it's important to determine which will best suit your purposes.

[

This is not entirely correct, and some of these announcements (at least as written) may have consequences that are not desirable to the station or the business. It is true that non-commercial stations can take "advertising" from non-profit groups. The second announcement may fit this, if non-profit. The copy would be illegal if it was a for profit company. However, by accepting advertising, the station may be subject to UBIT by the IRS, which they would not if they just aired an acknowledgement of the donation and stuck to the underwriting rules for both profit and non-profit businesses or organizations. Some of this copy may cross the line or be very close to it, in terms of being FCC acceptable/legal, if a commercial establishment.

They are hucksters, used car dealers, shills. Examples? Leroy Jenkins, Bill Swad, Ernest Angely, Rex Humbard, Rod Parsely, Billy and Pat Wasmus. What about Peter Popoff ...... exposed as a fraud on 20-20 who's "ministry" pulled in $16 million last year. Oh yeah, Benny Hinn? Bill Swad sits on his board of directors. I've met Bill Swad ... all that guy ever talks about is money!

ONE religious station is enough. The airwaves simply do not need to be polluted with any more of these little satans!

Anyone who has ever seen World Harvest "church" (more like complex or compound) will have a hard time believing their monetary donations are going to a good cause. And when someone sees Rod Parsley's $1 million+ home, it's hard to believe that money is going to a good cause (http://www.dispatch.com/2005/08/21/20050821-Pc-A8-0400.jpg).

I don't necessarily agree with Dirty_Harry but I would agree that many Christian broadcasters prey on people who can't necessarily afford to give away the money that they do.

Dirty_Harry, I am very sorry that the representation of Christianity you have seen have included people who are fakes. It hurts me also as a Christian to think that people are springing up their own false religions or teachings in a misleading and extorting fashion. I must also admit, though, that all Christians including myself are never perfect...

That being said, I do believe and know that there are honest, true Christians that do work in broadcasting. I had the opportunity to be around some up in Toledo for a few weeks at Yes-FM. You can see that these people are personally following what is preached through the Bible and make efforts to share that faith honestly through their on-air presentation and in their business practice.

I understand your criticism, and frankly, I may even agree to some degree with your assessment (though maybe not in the same language). However, please know that there are honest, hard-working Christians out there too.

I would maybe say more, but this is a radio board, so we'll get back to the topic at hand...

If 91.5 were to go to a Christian organization, I would hope for the market that, if they go the music route, they find a middle road between RadioU and the River, similar to an M88 in Albuquerque or a Way-FM in Tennessee (even maybe Yes-FM Toledo). Air1 could even possibly be a consideration. But, if a Christian organization wanted to go the teaching route, you could maybe consider Cedarville's WCDR network or possibly Moody as interested parties. WCDR has a translator at 88.1 which appears to get decent coverage on the south side according to Radio-Locator.

I can't offer much speculation, though. I only go through the market via car periodically, and usually listen to RadioU on the way through. Sometimes, some of the class B's (WNCI, WBNS, WBZX, WLVQ, even WHOK) will sneak in on the band up here in Wadsworth if the weather is correct.

I was raised Catholic .... and still consider myself to be one. Although all operations like that have to be run as a business in order to stay afloat, one of the nice things is that that wasn't the focus. They were too busy with their altar boys! (joke) What is offensive to me about MOST Christian broadcasters are fixated on the dollar sign. So, in other words, it's a business.

Anyway, Columbus lacks good signals ...... and it's a free signal, too boot. That signal can be put to so much better use for the community than using it to provide niche programming that serves as a pretty front for money-grubbing boiler room operators. There have got to be things like World Music, NPR or other types of educational programming that could be thrown on there rather than money grubbers asking you to "tithe for God!" I wish WOSU would step up and buy the thing rather than have more Christian crap on the air.

Let's just look at the stations ....... Radio U, WCDR, WRFD, WCVO, WUCO, 90.9 in Lancaster .......... not to mention the shiny suits and slicked back Elvis impersonators who pollute WSFJ and most of Low Power TV!

How much Christian crap do we need on the air?

A few thoughts:

1. There are plenty of responsible Christian broadcsters who are well-intentioned, responsible and loving people who are truly trying to do good for all.
2. There are absolutely more Christian broadcasting shysters than ever before, hogging a highly disproportionalte portion of the spectrum for personal gain and to spew hate in the name of "truth." (Come to think of it, there are far too many secular talkers doing the same...)
3. There is far more of the smug and ugly, "hotline-to-God, we know the truth, live our-way-or-hit-the-highway" attitude on the radio than in years past, no doubt reflecting (and influencing?) non-broadcasting trends.
4. When did the format change from "religious" to "Christian"? Could this partially be a subtle reflection of #3?

I was amused to hear Christian Broadcasting's 91.5 play the Genesis (with Phil Collins) early 90's hit "Jesus He Knows Me"
this afternoon. Wow, could you imagine that becoming a hit TODAY even if Collins were still hot?? Some of the lyrics are choice, especially near the end...to the point where it sounds like Dirty Harry was feeding him the lines. And speaking of Ernest Angely (sp?), I had forgotten about him, but the opening of this video sure reminds me of that guy. Frankly, Angely seems positively harmless and human compared to the latter-day #####'s like Rod Parsley with his direct hotline to God, palatial estate and father-in-law who ######.

Enjoy:

I agree with DH on one issue: We don't need any more religious crap on the air. On the other hand, we sure could use a Christian station who's doing it right. The Christian community in central Ohio deserves that.

Well then why can't one of the existing Christian stations do that? I think that's Dirty Harry's point. Don't solve bad programming by hoping for yet another signal to fill the void. Hope that one of the existing programmers gets their act together.

FWIW, I thought RadioU was doing it "right" are they not? They sure get a lot of accolades not only from in Columbus but nationwide.

RadioU does a very very good job at what they do. As a person that doesn't like "christian" music, at time I have enjoyed listening to them. Their imaging guy does a great job at their promo's, liner's, etc. The jocks are professional sounding, and it's a good product period.

Granted, RadioU does a great job. But Christian radio isn't Christian radio. Just like there's a difference between contemporary country and bluegrass, today's rock and classic rock, there are differences in Christian music as well. The River was on the right track for a while, but they've apparently abandoned their local market to build their network. They used to have a decent morning show. What happened? Their fundraisers are a prime example of stereotypical bad, amateurish programming. It's the kind of stuff that almost gives DH an excuse to feel the way he does. To most Christians, it's an embarrassment. There's a huge segment of the Christian audience that is not being served.

I look at Christian programming and stations as being not much different than the home shopping channels. The production value is the same, there isn't much value in the programming, and it's always about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! Show me the money!

You use that word "always" a LOT. DH, you're just plain wrong. To quote the bard, Joe South, "There is none so blind as he who will not see."* Maybe with a bit more life experience, you'll get it.
